  1. <Juffo-Wup> I've been screwing around this morning with my old packard bell pentium 90 that I hauled out of storage a while back to boot up.
  2. <Juffo-Wup> Its CMOS battery is dead, and is not a coin cell on the motherboard so cannot be trivially replaced. Probably(?) because of this, I cannot get the onboard IDE controller in the BIOS to "remember" that the attached IDE drive needs to boot in extended CHS mode; thus, the computer won't boot from its IDE drive.
  3. <Juffo-Wup> so i slapped a SCSI controller in there and used Norton Ghost to clone its IDE drive over to a SCSI drive. so far, so good: the computer will boot off the scsi drive
  4. <Juffo-Wup> however, shortly after the "Starting Windows 95" screen comes up, it stops with a message: "Insufficient memory to initialize Windows. Quit one or more of your memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and restart your computer"
  5. <Juffo-Wup> if you hit F8 and tell it to just dump you to DOS and not start windows, all of the memory stuff (both conventional and extended) looks fine
  6. <Juffo-Wup> if you try to start windows in safe mode, it percolates a little longer on the "Starting Windows" screen, then the computer suddenly reboots ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  7. <Juffo-Wup> I don't remember this computer's OS install having been borked the last time I used it, although that _was_ about 10 years ago.
  8. <Juffo-Wup> Examining BOOTLOG.TXT after attempting to boot windows into safe mode, the last line in the file is "[000C4736] LoadSuccess = VPD"
  9. <Juffo-Wup> This computer has 16 MB of ram installed, so it's not the 1 GB+ issue
  10. <Juffo-Wup> I'm inclined to just see if I can install win95 fresh on the machine, or whether that fails too
