  1. It was about three in the morning on a small town right next to the cool, calm winter. Unfortunately for those walking among the streets around this time, the loud, forceful winds chilled them to the bone. While the breeze would be crisp and refreshing on a summer afternoon, the inhabitants of this town found themselves in the middle of a brutal winter. Men piled upon pairs of warm jeans and thick coats, women walked along the streets wrapping themselves to their blankets, and most children were inside.
  2. The only exception was a short, young girl by the name of Burgundy, who was wandering along the streets almost as if she was walking aimlessly. She was wearing two pairs of sweatpants, a deep red sweatshirt, and a black scarf wrapped around her neck. However, most of her clothing were obscured by the quilt she had wrapped around herself, which had patterns of various bird Pokemon woven into the fabric.
  3. As she walked along the boardwalk, her short, dyed pink hair grew thin and dry from the brutal winds. She held a small brochure in her hands with all of her attention focused into it as she stumbled along the street, bumping into anything that she possibly could. In bright, golden letters, the cover of the brochure read "Your First Pokemon: Where and How to Obtain Them."
  4. "Oh wow, all of these look so cool..." The girl mused in an almost hypnotized state, staring at images of various Pokemon, and basic information about them. Her finger landed on an image of a Chikorita with their leaf colored red. "Wow, I'm so glad I joined the Trainer's Club three years ago. I had to do so many bake sales, but I'm finally a diamond member!" She stroked the red-leafed Chikorita, whispering to the image. "You're all mine, sweet child. I won't let anyone else touch you..."
  5. Burgundy flipped to another page in the brochure, which simply contained more Pokemon for those in the Trainer's Club. All of them were clearly for beginning trainers such as herself, but an image of a purple Caterpie had also caught her eyes.
  6. "This one looks cool, too..." she looked to the information right next to the image, having to strain her eyes to read the text. "A Caterpie that was bred by two Johto-born Butterfree. Her name is Majesy, level six and died purple to show she has maximum Health and Special Defense IVs. Knows Tackle, Bug Bite, and String Shot... I dunno what any of that means, but that must mean Majesty is good!"
  7. Burgundy continued to walk along the street, mumbling to herself as she looked upon the various exotic colored Pokemon, switching between what Pokemon she wanted to choose as her lifelong partner. However, she was distracted from her decision when she had passed by a well lit building, the only building that had any lights on at all. Burgundy let out a loud, shrill hiss from the lights, looking up to the building to see that it was actually the Trainer's Club.
  8. Burg ran over to look through one of the window and saw various soon-to-be trainers choosing from various colored capsules, and others writing their name on their trainer card with their new companion already out of their ball. Burgundy's eyes lit up as she saw the sight, starting to salivate at the sight of so many beautifully colored creatures. The child stuffed her quilt into a small backpack with various anime characters drawn on it, running inside of the building at full speeds, screeching at the top of her lungs: "Mr. Hansen, Mr. Hansen, gimme one of those things right now!"
  9. The sight of a feral child wrapped inside of a quilt, practically foaming at the mouth made the supervisor jump, making the other children get to the back of the room in fear of them being infected by whatever ungodly virus the poor monster had. But when the man realized that the child was actually one of the most recent diamond members, he flashed Burg a smile and waved to her.
  10. "Oh thank god, it's just you." Mr. Hansen had to stop to take a breath, then walked closer to Burgundy. He wore a Hawaiian flower print t-shirt and white shorts, which seemed completely foreign to Burg, who was used to wearing only winter-time clothing for her entire life.
  11. "Now that you're a diamond member of the official Trainer's Club™, you now have the privilege to earn your first Pokemon! You might have heard this speech before, but here in the region of Skojerg, we pride ourselves on the fact that, unlike other regions, we have set out to create a non-profit organization that allows young children of low income families to obtain rare, well bred Pokemon! This is always an important part of anyone's childhood, and I'm happy to share this experience with all of you. Now, Burg, the species of the Pokemon inside is written on the ball. When you choose your critter, write your full name on a this slip of paper. This will become your Trainer's Club Diamond Certificate, which offers you a 10% discount at all PokeMarts!"
  12. By the time Mr. Hansen had finished his speech, Burgundy already found herself at the low, wooden coffee table which held the last remaining Pokemon. All of the capsules had such exotic names written on them: Cyndaquill, Chikorita, Totodile, Caterpie, Corsola, Houndoom, Sunkern... Then, the very last ball on the table caught the child's eye. She saw a capsule that was painted a single shade of magenta, with an dull pink heart pattern on the top half of the capsule. The ball read "Chansey" in deep red lettering.
  13. "I've heard about those things, they turn into Blissey!" Burg swiped the ball off of the table and grabbed a certificate from Mr. Hansen, shakily writing her name in a space for each individual letter, until the certificate read "This certificate for becoming a diamond member for the Trainer's Club now officially belongs to Burgund."
  14. "Hey, that doesn't look right," Burgundy stared down to the slip of paper, then ran up to Mr. Hansen, handing him the slip. "Mr. Hansen, do you still have any certificates that can hold bigger names? Mine can't fit on this one!"
  15. "Oh, your name surpasses the character limit?" Mr. Hansen's usual casual and happy expression turned into a frown. He gently took Burgundy's hand and slowly walked away from the other trainers in the room, taking her Poke Ball and certificate in his hand. "Look, Burg, I've known you for a few years now, and you've been very loyal to the Trainer's Club, so it really pains me to do this. The Trainer's Club works with the Indigo League, and one of their official rules state that no trainers with a name that surpasses the 7 letter character limit is allowed to get a Pokemon from the Club."
  16. "Huh, wait, what? Why wasn't I ever told about this? I've been planning to be a trainer ever since I joined the Trainer's Club! Please, Mr. Hansen, you don't even need to give me the certificate, all I need is just one Pokemon!" Burgundy started to tear up as she watched her precious Chansey being taken away from her, holding back tears almost as if her own parents were being taken away from her. Though her vision was cloudy, Burgundy could clearly tell what Mr. Hansen was handing back to her. She took it in her hands and looked down to it; it was a paper bill with the number "50" written on it, along with a picture of Professor Oak.
  17. "Look Burgundy, I know that I can't give you a Pokemon as someone who works for the Trainer's Club, but I can at least take you to a nearby Pokemon Shop. They may not have as good of a selection of Pokemon as the Trainer's Club, but you get five Poke Balls with whatever creature you buy, so you can go catch something better in the wild if you really want to!" Mr. Hansen walked Burgundy to the exit of the Trainer's Club, plucking a thick, blue coat from the nearby coat rack. "I'll take you there, too. I can't just leave children running around town in the middle of the night, that's probably unsafe."
  18. Mr. Hansen led the way for Burgundy, taking her to a nearby Pokemon Shop. Luckily for the two, the Shop was merely on the other side of the street, almost as if it was an annex for the Trainer's Club specifically made for diamond members that failed to get a Pokemon from the Club, like Burgundy did.
  19. The inside of the shop was rather calm, although it smelled just as disgustingly mysterious as other Pet Shops did. There were various bird Pokemon sitting in their cages, squawking out at Burgundy aggressively as she got near them. There was an old, decrepit man who stood behind a counter, who waved at Mr. Hansen.
  20. "Hello there, Hansen. I see that you've got yet another diamond member that can't enter the Indigo League?" The man asked in a tone that didn't convey surprise. He was reading a magazine, on the cover was an anime girl on a plain red background, the magazine was labeled "24 Game Freak." All of his attention seemed to be in the magazine, as the Pokemon creatures seemed to be growing restless.
  21. "Yeah, it's such a shame, too. I've heard that there's a new, unofficial Pokemon League that's popped up recently, but it's only got about six gyms established so far, but I've heard of rumors for plans of eleven gyms recently!" Mr. Hansen walked to the various bird Pokemon, immediately backing away from one when it tried to toss sand into his eyes.
  22. "Huh, eleven gyms? I can't even complete all eight gyms in the games, and you're expecting me to complete eleven?!" Burgundy just had to sit down, on the verge of having an emotional breakdown.
  23. "Don't worry about that now, Burgundy, all you have to worry about right now is choosing your Pokemon." Mr. Hansen replied, slowly walking Burgundy to the counter. "Ever since the other League has opened up, this store has had a sale on Baby Pokemon for rejected diamond members. Now, it's very hard to obtain one of these things, so make sure you choose wisely, okay?"
  24. Burgundy nodded and walked herself to the counter, seeing four custom painted balls resting in a case. She started to read off the names listed on each ball. "Smoochum, Cleffa, Magby, and Elekid... Oh golly, I've heard of these things in the brochure. I even thought about taking a Smoochum for a while, too!"
  25. Burgundy took a step back to think of her options, analyzing each creature carefully. Finally, after at least half an hour of thinking, she finally chose...
