Al broadcasted and Hell 24/7

What do you anons think of this as another fic idea: I rewatched the pilot the other night and noted that Vaggie said Al broadcasted his initial conquest of Hell over the radio.
Might make for a fun fic idea, written like a serial radio drama, of Alastor hosting his 'show' going around ganking Overlords and other powerful demons.

I'd position it something like a full episode focused on 666 News (or it's radio equivalent, considering this was 1933) where Alastor shows up in features and inserts which are interlinked with regular news stories and caller segments with guests, and as time passes, you see him slowly growing stronger.

The news station starts to report on odd circumstances where the odd Overlord is found dead with no link to what caused their death, and eventually they're reporting on the mysterious demon who is never seen, but is rumoured to be so powerful he's wiping out some of the top brass and it's starting to become concerning to Pentagram City, before all hell breaks loose and he purges everyone like Vaggie showed in the Pilot. At the end, Alastor is the one reporting on the carnage as he took out the previous hosts of the news station in order to broadcast his terror further.

I do like that idea, actually. I guess a freshly-killed Al wouldn't be quite sure of his powers yet, and you're right, wouldn't be broadcasting from the get go. He'd have to test his limits first.

I was imagining it as an abrupt zero to sixty. His toppling of overlords was described as something that happened "seemingly overnight". Almost like that Cloverfield movie: everyone's chilling one minute, then suddenly there's some big catastrophe and then it's all downhill from there.

Then maybe that's just me projecting and not being entirely onboard with putting myself outside my depth right away.

As I've said before, it's best to know your enemy, so lay low and see how they operate, or who are your most immediate dangers, rather than jumping in at the deep end with all this power, only to get curbstomped because you messed with a Demon that was too powerful, despite all the other Overlords you put the boot on the neck to.

Maybe I think Alastor's portrayal makes me think he's smarter than just making such rash decisions of, 'I have this power so I'll just kill people with this untested power to cause chaos'. Alastor strikes me as someone who's heavily invested in self-preservation and I can't imagine him at least not scoping out his power before acting.

I can't decide if I think he's really smart like you said, and would be careful, or just a nutter like he presents himself as at face value. On the one hand, you didn't have to be that clever to get away with being a serial killer back before modern forensics was developed, he might have just realized he was powerful upon manifesting and just gotten lucky when he went off on his murderous jag. On the other, he may have taken his time to properly quantify his new power through observation and thought to himself "okay then I can eat any sinner smaller than me but stepping on a Goetia demon's toes will get me turned to stone". If any of our ideas about him being an occultist in life held true, he might have even known exactly where he stood going in.

For all we know his 'overnight mass slaughter' was a pre-orchestrated event that took him a significant amount of time to prepare, and not a spontaneous event that vaggie implies it is.

For all we know, he could've died earlier than when we are led to believe he died, somehow acquired his powers, and changed his appearance so people believed he was a newcomer.

There are simply a lot of ways Alastor's backstory can be taken, only time will tell.

Would demons in Hell genuinely be out to get others 24/7, or could you take a walk in the city without the threat of being attacked or murdered, or go and get food or coffee without your head being kicked in by another patron who takes a disliking to you?

Also, how would sinners make friends? Trial by combat and combining their forces, or just doing drugs and getting drunk with one another?

Not 24/7, no one can function like that except the enemies in a FPS. They're shown to have bars, pool halls, restaurants, etc, where people congregate without immediately tearing each other apart. At one point you even see a bunch of demons all standing in front of the TV shop watching the news, Alastor among them, and no one wigs out too badly. It would seem to be more like living in a dense urban center with a very high crime rate/organized crime presence and poor policing, just ratcheted up to 11 and a half, with some supernatural tomfkery thrown in as the cherry on top.

Taking the Alastor comic as an example. We can clearly see average sinners milling about living their lives doing normal things. Walking the streets, eating at cafe's, talking with friends in public. We even see a street performer playing their musical instrument in public, who isn't even paying close attention to his tip hat.

Of course we also see someone being grabbed off the street and strangled to death, some bystander being cannibalized, potentially while still alive. As well as Sheep Girl almost being kidnapped and chopped up into food.

Hell, or at least Pentagram City, is an environment that requires you to pay attention to your surroundings, but it does not come off across as a hellish 24/7 warzone of indiscriminate death and chaos.

Granted, that seems to be the cannibal colony, which may be a more ritzier, "sophisticated" part of town.

I get the feeling that Pentagram City/Hell is the ultimate exercise in situational awareness, the 'sink or swim' mentality. Your not in some first world city, if someone sees weakness they'll grab you and take what they can, but if you keep a good distance you can avoid most problems.

Makes me wonder why Charlie's hotel isn't gaining more ground, given that she presents herself as almost completely sweet and harmless. If I had to freak with the stress of worrying about being robbed, rped, or eaten every time I closed my eyes, a cheerful girl telling me I can stay somewhere safe if I promise not to inject any heroine in my eyeballs would be a pretty easy sell.

I strongly doubt everyone in Hell is an asshle. Granted it may be the 98%, but there's still the 2% that may genuinely be either good people, or people who just don't see reason in being angry and violent 24/7 if they're stuck down there for eternity, regardless of what others think. The general population seem to think people being nice and redemption is a joke, but there's still proof that people are nice in Hell I'd wager. Sure, it might be suspicious, but people may genuinely have good intentions, like Charlie does, (even if in my opinion she's incredibly naive, not knowing human nature and she has never lived on Earth, and humans are known to just do whatever strikes their fancy most of the time).

True, but she does have some clout as being genuinely kind. It's evidently her job to signal when a cleanse is over and its safe to come out again. At the very minimum, everyone in Hell knows that she can be trusted to be sober and attentive enough to pay attention to where the exterminators are and give the all clear only after it really is clear, rather than luring them out early just to laugh at them as they get butchered.

Exactly my thoughts. And as things go on if the hotel properly gains traction as an accredited institution, it surely would become stop number one for some sinners as soon as they manifest, if they feel they were put down there wrongly. It would be interesting if they got *so much* interest that they'd have to start turning Sinners away.

She'll be facing capacity issues well before the actual rooms run out, as the building itself is a hodgepodge mess with a lot of structurally unsound parts.

If I had to guess, I would think these thoughts are circling through people's heads

There will undoubtedly be a subsection of people who would welcome her idea, if only for the protection. But I imagine most people living in hell have turned to some vice/s that get them through the day, ontop of everything else, asking them to surrender them would be too much to ask.

True. She's going to need to acquire some substantial resources. I wonder how much Alastor can help with that/how much assistance on the front she'll be willing to accept from him once she realizes he's just stealing sht.

I don't reckon they'll come to blows, but I think they'll have some sort of ultimatum where Charlie tells Alastor to take his responsibilities seriously and no longer treat it as a joke or he's out on his arse, or she'll sully his reputation or something.

I can see her trying to be stern with him and making him help "legitimately". As in
