- Darren summary, will add my own comments at times:
- >Says that the games having less features is a statement of fact
- Correct
- >Warhammer 2 will be definitely better than warhammer 1
- >Kinda hard to predict DLC sales and how much is worth investing into DLC when we don't have DLC sale stats - mentions jabberslyth as an example but doesn't actually care about it
- >We do get lots of FLC so there is some extra money getting into the game
- >Compares monster units to elephants
- This is kind of retarded because it ignores flying monsters, isn't the same in terms of gameplay as single-model monsters and are more like bigger trolls tbh because they have multiple models
- >Says that Warhammer diversity isn't a new thing to the series and says rome and carthage and barbarians and greeks are all unique, says they require different models
- While there are faction differences I definitely wouldn't say it's to the extent that warhammer is. On the note of models they're all very much the same in older games considering they're all human and have the exact same animations, the difference in appearance is there though.
- >Doesn't think CA are evil, just isn't happy with where warhammer is going. Was hoping that Warhammer built on attila in a fantasy world
- While I don't disagree it should be noted that warhammer development started very early, possibly even prior to attila iirc
- >Says he already thinks the bridges are burnt and doesn't mind. Won't talk about what they're working on in CA
- >Talks about sieges and settlement battles, lack of wall animations and stuff, says that it might be a combination of both GW taking a cut and CA being jews.
- >Goes on to talk about sales numbers for Warhammer although I'm not sure it takes into account how many purchases were at full price. Says that the money definitely isn't going into the second game
- This feels slightly contradictory to his earlier statement that Warhammer 2 was definitely going to be a better game, obviously some money has at least gone into it. CA has also stated that a lot of their money went to fleshing out DLC they weren't initially planning to release (for example norsca I think was not initially planned for until after seeing the sales numbers, if I had to guess the Old World update probably wouldn't have been bothered with if the game did shit)
- >States blood pack more expensive than ever was for warhammer, asks whether the blood pack does anything new
- Blatantly false, Rome II had the same price and so did Attila. I don't know how much bodies exploding into gore costs to make but I'd probably count that as something new too.
- >Chaos and Norsca. Says Norsca is a much better preorder bonus but also 2 times more expensive. Says Norsca has good features but Chaos doesn't
- This is fair in my opinion. While Chaos has gotten slightly better with updates I don't think that horde factions in general should be so expensive considering they don't have a great deal of campaign variety - feels like an inherent issue to me that there's no room for diversity when there aren't even map objectives because you can't settle places
- >Darren tried to leave the game a year ago but couldn't for some reason. Has 5 grand saved up so ~5 months to do something
- >Everyone should kick a massive shitstorm to pressure CA because he can't change it from the inside
- >Mentions he factored in valve's cut into game 1 but has no idea what GW cut is and wouldn't be allowed to say either
- >Mentions the theory that Darren was initially hired because he was gaining popularity while criticising CA (the general theory being they wanted to shut him up). Says he doesn't really think its true.
- >Darren is adopted so it wouldn't be incest with his parents
- >Mentions being called a sellout when joining CA and felt upset about it, considering he didn't take the job just for money because total war is his favourite series
- >Will have Day 1 Warhammer 2 review, "History of" series will compare different iterations of the series over time, says he won't be a nostalgia fag though and understands sacrificing things for other things
- >Says you might as well call races factions, complains again about only four factions but does state that the design is way better on them
- Again kind of self contradictory, if the design is admittedly better then doesn't it make sense they could only produce less?
- >Says CA no longer has community coordinators anymore - Joey is now working in marketing somewhere
- >Says he knows everything for the next five years in CA's pipeline
- >Says warhammer 1 is a low 7 high 6, says the battles are excellent and fun, maybe a little fast. Says campaign is just shit. Refers to Call of Warhammer mod for Med2
- >Warhammer 2 campaign is definitely better than warhammer 1. Vortex and faction resources add slightly more depth.
- >States that you can build literally any building with no drawback because you've got more slots than there are building chains now which is a problem if there's no debuff
- >Aside from GW/Steam cut and licensing for audio engine and other things, CA does everything in house so the cost of the game is mostly just paying employees
- >Mentioned downvoting to a fair criticism on the subreddit, mentions it just being a hype machine. Downvoting criticism isn't helping anyone but a lot of the community is already split
- >Talks about carno vs hellpit animations and how reddit was sucking it off. animations aren't too bad when monsters actually sync up but they're not entirely smooth and there's a lot of sliding/clipping with units
- >Says some CA employees might see him as a dickhead but he isn't blaming their work for the problems - even in the case of animations he's sure it would be better with more time
- >Talks about how he released a vid criticising attila a week before joining CA and did it even against being told it wasn't a great idea
- >Says angryjoe and totalbiscuit are people he looks up to for them growing and having influence in the industry now. Cites Angryjoe with regards to Chaos
- >Generally wants to help pro-consumer sentiment
- >Called his channel republic of play because he doesn't expect to just be alone - possibly having people for other genres such as having a shooter/fps member for those sorts of games
- >Mentions he has a really farflung idea for a game and hopes to one day be able to fund that game.
- >Doesn't expect it will work out for him
- >States that the FLC policy is very good, everyone gets something, RoR update was cool, etc.
- >Reiterates that the game (warhammer 2) is totally fine if you like warhammer 1 it's an improvement
- >Personally wouldn't by a game that is 50% old game and 50% new game, says he'd wait for a sale but hasn't played the full game yet
- >Same UI, same spells (for the old lores)
- While the UI doesn't distance itself from the old UI I will say there were quite a bunch of QoL improvements that I saw. There's also the change of how the map works, easier functionality for toggling, more flexibility with enemy turns, etc
- >Says ArchWarhammer's heart is probably in the right place but could express opinions better and do more research into things. Often watches him and knows what he's trying to say but questions why he goes out calling the developers cunts and whatnot. Says Arch often doesn't do constructive criticism and instead goes for just straight up bashing
- >Cites an example where arch lost his shit over a fence being next to a unit thinking they were deployable when he could easily have checked the map in game
- >Describes perfect sunday roast: Doesn't like turkey, likes chicken, ham, potatos
- >Responds to chat about CA Australia made Stormrise which probably killed them (kek) but they did make Medieval 2 which was good
- >Arena has deployable fences apparently
- >Chat: "When is DLC okay and not okay?". Darren: DLC for warhammer has been really good but quite expensive. Says Norsca was most expensive DLC. Mentioned incomplete rosters
- The norsca comment is blatantly false here. Roster comment is fair
- >Wants features as FLC and content drops as DLC
- >Talks about how CA released DLC in rome 2 when sieges were still completely broken with siege ladders not working and stuff
- >Responds to a question asking of Brexit affects CA's jewness or something, says no as they were doing it beforehand. Mentions how CA has been expanding company (Halo Wars 2 building, new Sofia office with 60 employes). Wishes more money went into total war and not other areas
- >Complains about armies being small in TW2
- >Responds to chat question about why jump shit and not try to change things from within - says he couldn't do shit from within and had been trying for 2 1/2 years
- >Before warhammer came out he did warn that people would be really annoyed about lack of settlements and shit sieges but CA just said it's too late now we'll just try manage problems. Similar with ladders, wall crumble animations, single-wall siege maps, etc. States people needed to complain when the game actually came out not now.
- >Is in a siege map and breaks it down with artillery - shows how there's no animation at all for the wall falling and it's just hidden with a bunch of smoke. Calls it cheap. Says he understand it seems like its nitpicking but cites that even shogun 1 had the animations and this is the first game to skip them. Criticises the excuse that "factions are different" when walls were already reskinned in previous games
- This is probably the first time I've seen him make a correct statement about how people can use "diversity" as an incorrect argument
- >Shows how the tower is also a fart of shame and disappears
- >Talks about his community perks and stuff and whatnot, mentions he'll probably play stellaris
- >Says how Rome II was shit when it came out also but at least it looked good when it was broken.
- >Think warhammer charges are excellent as an example of something good
- >Talks about how buff spells are basically just the previous unit abilities with graphics. Mentions vortex spells are actually pretty cool with physics and animation but are still not as complex as people expect
- >Mentions flying units look somewhat embarrassing, makes a comparison to how GoT dragons fly and in total war they sorta just float around, lack momentum
- >Says that even if people like Warhammer 1, they should still want more. Games didn't sell as well before and we had more content (complains about how there's about 8 siege layouts and most of the battles are sieges)
- >Says he can't talk about future game content so don't ask
- >citing the combined map as FLC is a shit argument in his opinion as it requires two games to be purchased to even play it
- >Says CA won't talk about the combined map until after the game is released so its something to talk about later - Darren would prefer it talked about earlier so people can make more informed purchases. Says modders should dig around in the game cause it's bound to have something in there
- >Does a comparison between Paradox DLC and Total War DLC, says its a bit of a complicated road because Paradox charges for features. Says the stellaris Utopia dlc was probably overpriced a bit and badly balanced. Leviathan dlc fine, plantoids too expensive, soundtrack is fine, rest he doesn't have and can't say. Talks about how stellaris is a very low art cost game but very high cost in the design department
- >Says with his perspective on Warhammer 2 it doesn't seem like sales is affecting budget and instead it is fixed
- >Never understands how CD Project Red FLC got praised when it's mostly just minor content spammed to make the dlc list look good. Gives them credit for their game being good quality, their GotY edition actually being good and including all the expansions as opposed to some
- >Musings about whether the games really needed to be split into a trilogy and not one big game with all the races and minor races. Doesn't believe they need to do that and says we should question what marketing people say. Makes a comment that maybe the game would have sold more as one big game
- Definitely don't believe that one big game would have sold as much unfortunately so gonna have to call bullshit on that one
- >In chat: "Would a jabberslythe really cost as much as an Age of Charlemagne". Darren does some rough calcs and says at most roughly 30 grand (1 month, 10 people at 3000 a month cost) to make a jabberslythe and compares to the DLC cost, says that while it is somewhat expensive to make his example is worst case scenario. Admits it's hard to say without DLC sales numbers
- >States that he knows the salary of some people in the design team and states they definitely aren't getting paid enough
- >Talks about how some companies at least strive for a higher standard and sacrifice a small portion of their profits
- >Says other companies don't min-max the amount of money, even CA didn't used to do that. Cites how Med2 Kingdoms expansion was 1/2 the price of the game, had 4 campaigns, 20 factions, new campaign mechanics, new units and forts, etc.
- >talks about how indie companies generally try to make a good game and aren't obsessed with maximising profits
- >Says Paradox does seem to treat their community better even though they did have some fuck ups
- >Says Darren worked over time even on his last day to get some videos out
- >Says an indie company couldn't make total war but a AAA company probably could
- >Starts talking about Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator game, says that all that game would need is some basic unit control and formation rotation and you'd have a good competitor to total war. Says he'd be happy with a 2d map and while the complex 3d map in warhammer is very beautiful its not necessary.
- >Will talk in future about AoE4
- >Says he doesn't know the exact reason why battles are slow, states CA is actually trying to slow it down but it's a complicated thing surprisingly
- >Talks about how it's funny people says there's no competitor to total war when he knows that's not true
- >Says slowing combat might break magic
- >says he's working on a rome 2 mod with a guy (has been paying someone to make it, he doesn't do much himself obviously)
- >Mod is about caesar's civil war and cleopatra rising against egypt. Shows an image of the menu background
- >Reiterates if he comes across as hostile to anyone at CA, it's not about the people that work there specifically and admires the quality of work they do given their constraints. Again wants to reiterate it's against the company management not the developers.
- >Wishes the developers could make a stand from within the company but its hard because they need their jobs. States he often hears frustrations within the company
- >Says that CA doesn't want to put the money into making it mod friendly because even though they have a tools team it'd be no tangible benefit for CA. talks about med2 and third age and how there's no way to see how many people bough the game for the mod and that he'd argue quite a lot
- Personally i'm not too fond of the mod argument, i feel mod increases replayability not new sales
- >Says he'll review endless space 2
- >Stopped streaming on CA's twitch because people get banned a bit easily because its a bit more PC.
- >Wishes he didn't have his NDA so he could explain more about CA. Doesn't agree with people arguing "oh what did you expect from a company they want to make money". Explains he didn't throw away his income just because he was butthurt about rome 2 or something and isn't just making a bad assumption based on something he has seen
- >Worked at a game studio before CA and understands the difference in attitude when they needed to get the job done vs making money
- >Recommends people don't work at the company that makes their favourite game but gives an example of his roommate Mitch who is a fan of total war and loves working at CA.
- >Offers anonymity to other CA employees saying he can get out messages of their frustrations
- >Read through his contract thoroughly when he left and the initial NDA he signed is the only one he signed
- >talks about how he dug the biggest hole in his life and jumped right into it, says he'll see how it goes.
- >States that "Don't like it don't buy it" is an okay philosophy
- >says he didn't quit without warning, did give his 4 weeks notice.
- >Talks about he was going to leave a year ago and renegotiated for more responsibility in order to make more change (within the marketing team). Slowly what he wanted to happen didn't happen. Got lots of messages from youtubers and modders saying CA's communication fell down
- >wishes he left a year ago and didn't waste a year and would have had more money
- >Says that he personally was probably actually overpaid for his exact job (making videos) but didn't make too much relevant to his rent costs
- >Says he told CA he was actually going to leave and wasn't trying to get an offer, CA offered more on their own but he never ended up getting what they promised.
- >He didn't think he'd be talking so much as was hoping to play steel faith overhaul.
- >"If you never hear from me again you know what happened, avenge me"
- >Says he's said about as much as he can. Didn't think as many people would care, Eurogamer reaching out to him and making a thing out of it, etc
- >TW:Arena impressions coming up soon
- >Might do a warhammer 1 review, if people interested in it
- >Doubts CA will ever send him something again but said he didn't want to take the option of shutting the fuck up and taking their free shit
- >Again reiterates that warhammer 2 is shaping up to be great but shares total biscuits sentiment that the price can be questionable given it's so soon after game 1 and shares so many assets
- >Says that it's not his fault if a company makes people redundant
- >Says Darren knows the next historical title, next saga, arena, etc.
- >talks about since Rome II started the regression, the f2p kingdom game was a shit waste of money
- >Says the Saga game is a cool era, the dlc for a previous historical is really good, the next historical is also very exciting
- >Says his impression of arena and the economy behind premium units is good, his fears were calmed in that regard. At this stage though it's been made for four years now and is either gonna be shit or needs to finish
- >Thinks that the feature stripping might be a set trend for warhammer and licensed games.
- >Goes into a long talk about what the teams are working on and whatnot, he'll be covering everything as they come out
- >I stopped caring after this point and I don't think there was anything relevant after this anyway
