After my doctors appointment I walked out with a strange feeling. While I was excited to have a new prescription for Enbrel I was torn about the diet advice. Specifically she mentioned cutting out carbs and doing high fat (The Keto Diet) helped people with their skin and many went gluten free to see if it had an effect on inflammation and some felt better. Which is great, don’t get me wrong but when you are face to face with a life choice on something so controversial how are you supposed to feel? Nervous? Confused? Torn? Mentally preparing Instagram posts? All of the above.
Now I have tried Keto and for me it was difficult to keep up with high fat and moderate protein. I did this for 2 months and never really got past the keto flu. I was never one to engorge myself on meat. I loved cheese and sugar and chocolate don’t get me started on ice cream! I have done gluten-free but only for about 2 weeks, I actually lost 6 pounds during that time. Still eating carbs, not increasing water intake by a significant amount, and maintaining the same caloric intake kept everything else in my diet pretty level. Despite the weight loss and great feeling the cravings got the best of me, because what is better than warm buttered bread?
So what have I learned going gluten and dairy free? Well week one wasn’t that bad I had a rough Monday but it seemed to get easier. Oh the cravings are there but the reality is that there are SO MANY junk foods that have labels of gluten free or vegan that are not healthy. I also learned that there needs to be more Youtubers in the Midwest because while it is great to have so many options on the west coast most people who hear that I wont eat gluten or dairy look at me like I’m just off my rocker. Monday was the hardest day. I was no longer under the protection of an open schedule of the weekend and my 6:30 am start at work began. I had been invited to a food day by my old team and I could only have one thing! They had hash brown casserole, biscuits and gravy, cinnamon roll bake, doughnuts, and a fruit tray. So needless to say I only had a few pieces of fruit. THEN my coworker had their birthday Monday so our manager bought Kolaches, of which I had none. While I was quick to get down about the good food I was missing out on I stopped and changed my thinking. I told myself if I can say no to temptation to foods that day I can continue to do so.
Having dinner with my (pseudo) in-laws last week was interesting, while they want me to feel better and have seen me hurt and be in pain, I don’t think they quite understand the dietary changes. I mean other people eat those foods and live fine so why would I think it would make a difference. I get it… I looked at people the same way. I try not to say anything about making special requests or not eating something but it still gets noticed. This is something I am still going to struggle with.
By the end of the week I noticed my appetite changing a bit. While I was eating fruit, veggies, and seeds during the day at work I made sure to eat enough to be full and I really wasn’t too hungry around dinnertime. When everyone else was eating burgers with tater tots I had the burger patty with a little mustard and about seven tots. I felt awful and heavy so I went downstairs to my kitchen and cut up an apple and had some peanut butter with it. The apple took away that heavy feeling in my mouth and stomach.
I am still learning and reading all of the labels I can, I am still learning how to have well rounded nutrient dense meals following my diet changes. I know answering peoples questions will get old and I know that people will have their own opinions that they need to share. Overall…? Week 1 of diet changes isn’t so bad.
