56. With a twenty two minute run time, there's not a whole lot you're going to learn about the outlaw couple resurrected by the 1967 film "Bonnie and Clyde". This documentary focuses on one specific shoot-out that occurred on April 13th, 1933 in which Clyde Barrow and his gang fought it out with an FBI detective and three members of local law enforcement in Joplin, Missouri. Still, there's some interesting stuff presented here, and it puts you right in the middle of the gun battle that left two police officers dead at the scene as the gangsters made their escape.

The escapees were not without their casualties however. Gang member W.D. Jones was wounded in the exchange, and Clyde's brother Buck was also shot along with Bonnie Parker. In terms of sheer firepower, the outlaws had the advantage as Buck Barrow used a Browning Automatic Rifle firing twenty rounds every three seconds, keeping the authorities on the defensive. With two lawmen down, the outlaws made their getaway after Clyde Barrow himself was shot by state trooper G.B. Kahler.

A search of the farmhouse from which the Barrow Gang operated produced some undeveloped roles of film that incriminated the members in their misdeeds, and eventually led to the killing of Buck Barrow five months later; his wife Blanche was captured. Just about a year following the confrontation depicted in the story, on May 23rd, 1934, Bonnie and Clyde were mowed down in an ambush that gained them instant fame. Up till then they had basically been small time criminals, but with their exploits making newspaper headlines around the country, twenty thousand people wound up in attendance for Bonnie Parker's funeral.

W.D. Jones, who was part of the gang when they made their escape in Joplin, was eventually arrested and served time. Interestingly, he was one of those in attendance to see the movie when it premiered in 1967.

For anyone interested in the 1967 film, it's a great picture on a number of levels - as a period piece with some outstanding scenes of 1930's city life and all those wonderful old automobiles on display, as well as a precursor to later pictures pushing the envelope with violence and brutality. The final scene is actually quite jarring even today, particularly when it's a woman who's getting rubbed out by the authorities. Not a scene for the faint of heart, especially as it's prolonged for maximum effect, and played at various speeds to heighten the emotions of the viewer.
