 → however, things took a turn when yoojung expressed an interest in becoming an idol, and requested to attended an audition. jaemin, having always looked up to his sister, became interested in the entertainment industry through her. yoojung had shown him a number of different music videos from a variety of groups, and jaemin made the decision then that he wanted to be an idol too, and signed up for music classes. his parents weren't too keen on the fact that their son wanted to be an idol, especially not when he was so academically talented, and would be able to get extremely far in the medical or engineering field, but didn't say anything, figuring that it was just a phase that jaemin would get over. his parents however, were pleased to find that jaemin's interest didn't disappear, and he only became more determined after his sister was accepted into fantagio. after begging for months on end, with help from his older sister, his parents finally let him attend at audition, albeit reluctantly. his parents didn't actually expect him to get in, but jaemin was determined and practiced for weeks with his audition pieces. to both his surprise and his parents, he was accepted. after the news, his parents had straight up refused to let him sign with the entertainment company. this caused a lot of conflict, and left jaemin furious, upset over the fact that they'd let yoojung become a trainee but they wouldn't let him sign under yg. it took weeks of jaemin not talking to his parents, and yoojung having to intervene and talk to their parents before jaemin was allowed to become a trainee. however, his parents were adament on the fact that he was not allowed to drop out of school, and that he was to graduate, with good marks, regardless of whether he was a trainee or not. his parents were still extremely disappointed, and believed he was throwing away his education and his brains to chase after something as pointless as an idol career, especially when they knew he was capable of so much more.

  → if there is one thing that can be said about choi jaemin, it is that he definitely does not have any street smarts. he comes off as a bit of a contradiction, because he is actually pretty book smart, but he's known for asking the stupidest questions, and often has no idea what he's doing. however, with a brain like his, people often wonder what he's doing in the entertainment industry. he's probably smart to enough to achieve so much in an academic field, and could probably invent some new scientific theorem or find a cure for cancer, yet instead he's choosing to spend his teenage years training under yg and compete in a survival show that he might not actually end up winning. however, despite his amazing book smarts, jaemin knows next to nothing about the outside world, and has the street smarts of a two year old. he is basically confused 24/7, and since he's one of the youngest, the others feel the need to dote on him and protect him, despite the fact that they're all competing against each other in a survival show. his clueless nature shows in the way that he tends to follow a lot of the older trainees around, and do what they do. he mostly tends to stick with the trainees who were born in 2000-2001 as they're closer to his age, but he's basically xinxin's useless side kick, and does whatever the older boy tells him to (they sort of balance each other out though, because xinxin's street smart and jaemin's book smart). jaemin is very efficient when it comes to his problems, and absolutely hates burying them. usually, he'll try and talk to one of the others, just to get it all off his chest, but if not, he'll pour all of it into writing rap lyrics. he doesn't really like to dwell on his problems for extended periods of time, and instead tries to find a solution as quickly as possible so that he can move on with his life. he is a very determined person, and always tries his hardest at whatever he does, simply because he feels the need to prove he's good enough. he already feels like he's at a disadvantage, because 1) people are going to compare him and his talents to those of his sister yoojung, and 2) he's one of the youngest trainees in the show, which means he has the least experience compared to his hyungs. he always perseveres at whatever he does, and just doesn't know when to give up, which often results in the other trainees or the managers having to physically put a stop to it all before he pushes himself past his limits. however, jaemin seems to have a talent for being good at everything. he's the type of person that other people hate, because he can just pick something up and suddenly be good at it, even if he's never tried it before in his life. the only thing he can't do it cook, and because of this, people tend to take the piss out of his for it, and constantly tease him about his horrible cooking skills. (it's all done in good nature, however, but people are just glad that there is something he's not so good at, and use it to their advantage whenever they can.) as the maknae, he definitely has to put up with a lot, because he's basically the scapegoat. he doesn't usually let this bother him, and instead likes to take it all in his stride. he always wants to be there for his hyungs and help them feel better whenever their stressed, because he hopes that they'd do the same for him if he ever needed a shoulder to cry on. he knows that they're all competing for the same spots in hg's knew groups, and he knows he probably shouldn't get attached to any of the trainees, because chances are he's not going to end up debuting with them, but he hates being alone, and tends to unknowingly cling on to people just to keep them with him so they won't walk away from him (probably clings to xinxin a lot, because he's a clingy person). he's very mature for his age, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that he had to grow up once he entered the entertainment company if he wanted to make in this industry. overall, jaemin is just a fifteen year old boy who wants to be loved but other people. he doesn't want to be put down or compared to other people, and as much as he loves his older sister, he wishes people wouldn't compare them ALL THE TIME.

  → he low-key only auditioned because of his sister. since she wanted to become an idol, he decided he wanted to become one as well, and follow in her footsteps. however, he auditioned about a year after his sister, and at the time, fantagio weren't holding auditions, so he went to yg instead, and attended the open auditions, and made it through to the next round.

  → kind of. he's always been one of the youngest trainees under yg, so he was always pushed to make sure he was on par with all the older trainees, regardless of being a lot younger than them. the trainers expected him to be better than he was, and they expected him to put in the effort. this put a lot of pressure on the young jaemin, who was barely a teenager at the time.

— have they ever experienced abuse from other trainees?:
  → not really. being one of the youngest meant that the others felt the need to look after him and make sure he was okay. they were always looking out for him, especially the oldest and the leader-figure trainees, making sure he was eating and sleeping properly. jaemin brought out the over protective parents in the hyungs, and to be honest they were too busy glaring at the people who looked at jaemin the wrong way to even think about abusing him.

— any other hardships as a trainee:
  → his biggest hardship was trying to balance his life, because after all he's still a teenager, and he gave up all of his teenage freedom to become a trainee, and compete on sabotage. it was really hard for him to give everything up, and he's still trying to find some sort of balance between it, since he doesn't really have many friends outside of yg entertainment due to spending most of his time with the other trainees instead of hanging out with his own friends.

— biggest struggle as a trainee (talent wise):
  → school was definitely one of his biggest struggles, and after he was accepted into yg, his grades took a dramatic drop (for him, anyway). as a smart person who had been consistently getting high marks and rank at the top of his class, his teachers and his parents were rather disappointed that they were dropping from a's to c's because of his training. despite the fact that he was still passing, everyone believed he had so much more potential in an academic career, and they still don't see why he's wasting it by pursuing an unstable career in the entertainment industry.

— best moment as a trainee:
  → his first birthday while signed under yg entertainment. all the other trainees came together to organise a small birthday party and they brought him a cheap chocolate cake, and all sang for him in the practice room. jaemin was so happy and he couldn't stop smiling for ages.

— why do they want to be on sabotage?:
  → jaemin is desperate to make it in the entertainment industry, and he's spent most of his teenage years trying to get to achieve his dream. he wants to be on sabotage because he wants to make a name for himself, and he doesn't just want to be known as CHOI YOOJUNG'S KID BROTHER all the time. he wants to prove that he has what it takes to be in this industry, and that he deserves it just as much as anyone else.
