- Suggestions for Gab.AI from a software developer:
- 1) Have hints appear above various options (such as comment, quote, repost etc) that gives a hint what precisely it does, rather than relying on trial and error.
- 2) Allow users to quote a post into a different topic area (with say, a dropdown list or 'recently visited' list). For example, I see a piece of artwork in the Art section but I want to make a humourous quip that's better suited to Humour.
- 3) When users requotes another poster, the UI should:
- Show likes/dislikes, repost, quotes etc for the quoted post directly under it
- Have a clear link in the top-right corner that takes you directly to the post (it's presently 'hidden' under the Post's timestamp of when they posted it, which is highly counter-intuitive and confusing)
- 4) Notifications should allow the user to:
- Toggle whether or not they see likes (presently my notifications get flooded with them and it makes it impossible to see who replied)
- Toggle whether or not they see replies
- Toggle whether or not they see requotes
- Toggle whether or not they see reposts
- It should save these settings
- 5) The ability to preview how a post will appear prior to posting it (it's unclear how images will display when posted).
- 6) Supply a built-in system for converting big links into small links, which could either be:
- A) A small URL pastebox on the side, or
- B) An automatic conversion tool that detects URLs that are not shorter than a certain length and 'compresses' them
- 7) To stop porn spam, users should have an initial probation period where their ability to post posts with images is capped to one per day. If an account's first few image posts are NSFW (EG porn spam) then all subsequent images are blocked behind NSFW regardless.
- 8) To improve work-friendliness, Gab should allow a user to set a mode that marks all image carrying posts as 'potentially NSFW' called 'worksafe mode' or similarly that are all hidden by default.
- 9) If a user 'unhides' a post that is marked NSFW, there should be a clear button indicating the ability to rehide that post (as presently if Gab does have one, it's not particularly obvious and means you either have to mute the entire user or refresh the page).
- 10) Gab should introduce the option to put reporting users on probation or permanent suspension of reporting (EG to stop false flagging), as it doesn't seem to presently exist.
- 11) Gab might want to consider inserting into their Terms of Service that by signing up, users agree to respect other people's freedom of speech and not actively call for other Gab members' censorship.
- 12) Gab should have a counter next to each topic to indicate (when the user loads up Gab) how many new posts have been posted there since they last logged in.
- 13) A more accurate search tool is advised, allowing for specified fields. At the moment, Gab's search tool doesn't work particularly well and seems to return irrelevant results to what is being searched for.
- 14) The ability to paste terms into the post field seems intermittent at best and needs to be resolved. It's not clear if Gab is trying to disable copy and pasting, but as a software developer I can categorically state it wouldn't work, especially when it comes to spam and propaganda (as automated tools can just insert the data into a form data upload). At present it is possible to paste into the post but it's finkly and inconsistent.
- 15) Removing and replacing Google Captcha. At present, Gab uses Google captcha, which I can state from personal experience tries to impede individuals that Google doesn't like (I'm sure the official dialogue from Google is they don't do such a thing). Given Google's past hostility to freedom of speech and hostility towards Gab (which even Gab notes in it's startengine fundraiser), I believe Gab should stop using Google captcha for numerous reasons:
- It allows Google to control the front door and frustrate efforts by well intentioned users whilst allowing pro-Google activists through easily.
- It allows Google to actively datamine who is visiting Gab.
- Google can suspend the captcha at any time, for no reason at all, blocking Gab from receiving any new sign-ups.
- 16) Introducing audio blogging (webcasts, podcasts)
- Something a lot of sites lack is the ability to produce audio. I genuinely believe such a feature should be PRO accounts online (as it runs the risk of copyright infringement, piracy etc so signing up with financial details discourages that abuse), but a lot of videos (mine included) tend to be nothing more than overglorified podcasts with visuals. Podcasts have a lower burden on system resources, and encourages what Gab is about - freedom of speech.
