  5. **Item #:** SCP-338
  6.
  7. **Object Class:** Euclid
  8.
  9. **Special Containment Procedures:** SCP-338 is to be placed on a reinforced glass pedestal in Containment Room 338A at Site 66. The pedestal contains indentations that will allow SCP-338 to rest on its long axis, as well as a 8cm x 28cm hole that will be positioned below SCP-338. The pedestal is hollow, containing a basin filled with 80L water. Items that manifest in SCP-338 will fall through the hole and into the water. The basin is to be refilled whenever the water level drops below 75 liters.
  10.
  11. A device, designated D-338-A, has been installed above SCP-338. It is designed to deposit 15 mL of water into SCP-338 at random intervals; due to the probability-altering effects of SCP-338, this will occur in response to almost every manifestation event. D-338-A is to be refilled with water whenever less than 150 mL of water are present in its storage tank.
  12.
  13. SCP-338 is to remain illuminated from several angles at all times. Whenever material appears in SCP-338, sensors will trigger the activation of eight high speed cameras, which will capture images of the item before it falls into the pedestal's hole. These images are to be sent to Level 2 research personnel for analysis. Any unusual images are to be reported to the on-duty HMCL supervisor.
  14.
  15. Level 1 maintenance personnel are to check and report on SCP-338's containment status daily, making repairs, adjustments, and refills as necessary.
  16.
  17. **Description:** SCP-338 is a cylindrical region of space 32cm in length and 12cm in diameter. The ends of SCP-338 are denoted by two unadorned copper disks 2cm thick that are immobile relative to each other. SCP-338 can be transported by moving one or both of these disks. All attempts to damage or otherwise alter the disks have failed. One disk is inscribed with the phrase "As it is here, so it will be in all worlds." on the side that does not face the other disk, while the "outside" of the other is inscribed with the phrase "As it is here, so it was in all worlds.". The side of each disk that faces the other contains the phrase "Why? Why.".
  18.
  19. At irregular intervals, a solid object or material will manifest inside SCP-338. Typically, this will be a common, easily obtained item or substance (see Document 338-RI for a full list of manifestation events). The origin of these objects, collectively designated SCP-338-A, is unclear. Between five and seven seconds after manifestation, all chemical bonds in the object will break, releasing heat roughly equivalent to the total energy of all chemical bonds in the object[[footnote]]By conventional physical laws, this should consume heat. It is unclear how or why this is an exothermic process.[[/footnote]]. Almost immediately afterwards, all atoms of the object will vanish entirely. Due to these properties, instances of SCP-338-A are thus unsafe to handle and difficult to analyze in detail.
  20.
  21. At some point in the two hours following a manifestation event, an item qualitatively similar to the corresponding instance of SCP-338-A will be inside SCP-338, which will vanish completely. This has never failed to occur, suggesting that SCP-338 is able to manipulate probability. This effect has been observed in even the most controlled circumstances -- when efforts are made to prevent the introduction of foreign objects to SCP-338, highly unlikely events will occur and/or personnel will act out of character in a manner that subverts these efforts. For this reason, attempts to restrict SCP-338's access to foreign materials are forbidden.
  22.
  23. SCP-338 does not appear to produce items that do not possess equivalents that could be found in Site 66. Further, when a particular item or material is more readily available than any other (such as water, under SCP-338's current containment procedures), SCP-338 will almost exclusively produce materials qualitatively similar to said material.
  24.
  25. **Addendum:** Notable manifestation events.
  26.
  27. * **1998/04/19:** A Foundation identification badge entitled "Level 1 Janitorial Personnel Marcus Dewald" manifested during daily maintenance. One of the maintenance personnel in attendance (named Marshall McDermott), who was aware of SCP-338's anomalous effects, stated "you can't fight fate" before placing his own ID badge into SCP-338. Subject was issued a new ID badge.
  28.
  29. * **1999/09/04:** Instance of SCP-338-A resembled the funnel component of D-338-A, with slightly different make. 87 minutes later, the funnel component of D-338-A detached and fell into SCP-338, at which point it disappeared. Review of maintenance logs shows that the funnel had been marked as requiring replacement for two weeks, but had been left unfixed for as-of-yet undetermined reasons.
  30.
  31. * **2000/12/31:** A 7cm x 15cm typed document printed on a piece of white paper manifested (see Document 338-833 for a full transcript). The document appeared to be roughly equivalent to this document -- while the organization, phrasing, and terminology used for SCP-338-A varied substantially, the containment procedures and other information presented remained essentially identical. The most notable difference was that the names "Marcus Dewald" and "Marshall McDermott" were exchanged in the above log entry. At Dr. Eichmann's suggestion, a copy of this document was fit to a 7cm x 15cm piece of paper and introduced to SCP-338, at which point it disappeared.
