- -----------------------------------------
- Missionary:
- - Eager to learn
- - Alteration prodigy, skilled in magics
- - Curious and inquisitive
- - 20-30 years old
- - Found in Arnima Temple with Priest of the Nine, sent to Arnima by Fenig from The Divide. Has travelled all over high rock due to nature of being a missionary.
- ------------------------------------------
- {Do you know where the Witchmen took the lord's amulet?}
- You must be the fifth mercenary he's sent after his baubles, 3 of them dropped the venture entirely as soon as I told them what they're going up against.
- And the other two never returned. Let's hope you're the exception, the cave is located up the valley, pass the Exile camp and close to the falls.
- {Thanks for the encouragement...}
- Not my place to lie friend, at least you know what you're up against.
- Also I must beg you a favor, if you do manage to return, could you tell me of anything you find within the cave, particularly anything related to the Direnni.
- Or anything pertaining to Daedra worship. We're stumped as to what's making these Witchmen so feral, and any findings you tell me of will contribute to this research.
- {Ok sure, I'll try to take notes on anything I find...}
- I'll tell the other priests of your help, may Stendarr grant you strength in your quest.
- {Is there anyway to reach the cave without shedding an ocean's worth of blood?}
- There is, but be warned, this mode of travel isn't used often, for obvious reasons - first being that you're never sure if you'll come out the other side in one piece. If you're eager to see it, follow me.
- {The lord told me that you have some news, I assume you need my help again?}
- Yesterday I engaged in a trial of sight in which I scoured the region through alteration in search of any more relics belonging to Mados.
- Well before any action, you should know a little about me, particularly of what I do. You see, I'm not here just to spread the Divine's wisdom.
- I'm here because the priest requested my skills, alteration to be exact; familiar with that art?
- {Yes I know of it}
- So you wont need me to hear me blather on, grand.
- I bring this up because one technique I've honed is to scour large tracts of land for things both significant, and relevant, to our interests.
- And recently my focus has been on one such thing - gauntlets belonging to the blessed and venerated Warknight; Mados. The items have vanished and no one had any answers as to where.
- Until now of course, with the help of yours truly.
- {No, I don't know of alteration}
- Not the most popular school of magic, so you're not alone. With sufficient understanding of the arts, reality becomes mutable - permitting us greater influence over our material world.
- Such potential, yet many forgo the discipline required and seek out the more, destructive, arts. Pardon the pun.
- {Where are they then?}
- Far to the north, way beyond this kingdom's grasp. Most strange is how far below the earth my search took me to. Right in the depths of that Dwemer ruin.
- {How did they get there?}
- My abilities only go so far friend, if I were able to peer into the past then most of our problems would be solved. Alas, we deal with what we're handed.
- Yet we can rule out a number of suspects who could hazard that voyage, a start at least.
- Oh my, going on about the why's and where's is quite the digression. What were we talking about again?
- {What you need me for?}
- Oh right, course! Well seeing as you've returned, seemingly unscathed from that perilous delve, would you be interested in yet another journey?
- {Sure, always up to see new places!}
- I hope that's a yes, dry wit is hard to part from sarcasm. Well friend, you know I'm ready. Else I wouldn't be heaving nigh twice my body weight in furs.
- If you pass me your map, I'll cross the location of the ruin's entrance. Got most of the local geography on the palm of my hand...
- Unless the Witchmen have the north covered in frozen dung and bloody pelts, that is.
- {I prefer to travel alone, sorry}
- Come now, I've also trained in healing - wouldn't want any mistake made up there to be your last!
- {I'm certain, I will make the trek myself and find the gauntlets}
- *Sigh* Alright, If that's what you wish. Not my place to demand escort from a mercenary. I hope you've got a mind for details, as I wont be able to help once you're up there.
- So get deep into the ruin, far as you can go - you'll come across a great cavern in time. Once there, you're on your own - I'm sure there will be something to indicate a recent presence there. Just have to follow the trail.
- This trial takes a while to prepare for and as such I have to make sure the process is complete and thorough, nearing the end something lured me in.
- I believe it to be the gauntlets that he wielded when battling back the Orsimer 30 years ago, but they seem to be within the old Dwemer ruins.
- {How did they end up there?}
- I wish I could tell you, it seems the relics have been scattered all over the region by some nefarious actor.
- As you are the one to call for these tasks, would it be possible for you to make the trek across the valley and into those ruins?
- {It seems as though being an errand boy is my fate, very well.}
- You are more than your fate I'm sure, I also don't expect you to make the ascent up the Maw by yourself, so I'll accompany you.
- But go with haste, as whatever irritating force that scrambles these valuables may place its gaze back upon them.
- {I'm sick of being runner boy, you'll just have to forget about those gloves.}
- These items are more than just their worth in gold, their very presence is what made the guard strong in the past. But alas it is your choice.
- {What should we do?}
- I've seen these devices in Dwemer scriptures and accounts, they tend to respond from a sufficient enough force applied to one of their "wings".
- Interacting with them may influence this contraption that they're linked to, and in doing so, opening that door. Although this is just theory.
- {Is there anyway to reach the cave without shedding an ocean's worth of blood?}
- There is, but be warned, this mode of travel isn't used often, for many reasons. First being that you're never sure if you'll come out the other side in one piece. If you're eager to see it, follow me.
- You want to find yourself in the Maw if you're to enter that cave. I'll pray for your return, hopefully this time I'll be answered.
- {I return from the cave, and I've taken note of the sights I saw inside....}
- What a tale! To and through the den of those ill-begotten souls, and lived to tell about it.
- I was doubting that anyone could make their way through that sinister cavern, let alone return with the favor I asked of them.
- {I've been through worse}
- Worse than the Witchmen? Please, spare me the nightmares.
- Yet these details you've provided affirms our accounts on those ancient elves, masters of trade they were called. There was no market in Tamriel that wasn't influenced dramatically by the Direnni's dealings.
- Their trade was not only limited to our mortal realm, oh no, they even reached out to the vile princes of oblivion for goods that one could only dream of obtaining.
- Colossal gates found within many a direnni ruin linked our realms with those dark planes.
- {Seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree with most of the hagglers around here.}
- You could say the merchants of High Rock owe a thing or two to the ruthless ambition and greed of their ancestors. But now this begs the question, why are the Witchmen fascinated with these structures?
- We've had theories, the most common being that they're drawn to the residual magicka that lace most of that ancient architecture. Like moths to a flame, they gather around places that have had their presence, in some way or another, in Oblivion
- {What hasn't been twisted by Oblivion here?}
- Tell me about it!
- It would explain how the Direnni built many of their constructs, most seem to not be the effort of manual labor. But intense use of magicka and other dark arts. Such use of magics always lingers on, it's how we can date most relics we do manage to find.
- And a great many thanks again to you for helping us out with this research, I'll have your efforts known by the other priests of the Circle. Trust me, we're very valuable allies to have in this part of the world.
- {Why do you think the gauntlets were moved here?}
- No clue, this meddling with Mados' apparel seems irrational, although we have noticed a trend of them being left near creatures who are notably hideous.
- The theft of these relics has apparently stopped since we locked away Mados' remaining gear.
- Leading me to believe that the thief isn't as powerful as we once thought. But its motives are still unclear.
- {So....Missionary?}
- Not good enough? Reamonn's the name, though in Cyrodiil they say it as "Raymond".
- {Cyrodiil?}
- I studied there. Thought it was my ticket into good life, only to end up back here. However, in retrospect... I wouldn't have it any other way.
- As we speak here, a lot of innocent blood is being spilt. And if I want to do something about it, there's no point in staying where it's safest.
- {You must be going out on missions often then.}
- Until recently I used to, yes. Quite a bit of fun too, never leaving Arnima without a shiv hidden in your boot. Now you need a bloody armed escort.
- {You held your own there, Missionary.}
- Like I said, not a mission without a shiv in my boot.
- {Now I'm half-expecting jail tattoos under those sleeves.}
- Would've been quite a lark, in fact! Seriously though, when you find yourself in a place like that, it's wise not to get any permanent mementos.
- {Oh, now I'm half-expecting Daedric runes.}
- Far-fetched, friend. When you're a Missionary in the Reach, you have both time and incentive to learn some self-defense.
- {Feels like you aren't telling me something.}
- It certainly does. What a peculiar feeling.
- {What can you tell me about the Witchmen?}
- Oh, a lot. Probably enough to be a bit biased, truth be told.
- Make no mistake, they were always savages who couldn't stomach civilization and would sooner gut you then explain why...
- ...but their "ways" have sustained their lot for several eras, whereas we drift from one failed Empire to another.
- {Do you admire them?}
- Know them too well for that. At the same time, I know enough to keep an open mind. It's the ones we are up against that are truly beyond redemption.
- {Can't say the Forsworn are much different.}
- They may be not different at all. Like I said, I'm very subjective regarding this matter.
- Many people only see the Madmen of the Reach blades-drawn, but in my travels I was able to catch them just... going about their lives.
- Like, little tykes catching frogs by the river, or young gals painting each other's faces to look like wights. Imagine fighting someone like that!
- Oh, how I ran on that day.
- It was all gone, however, when the kind of folks you've met started growing in numbers and slaughtered whoever wouldn't fall in line.
- But you know what? Those weren't many. Some escaped, but it seems that most were genuinely interested in these new, even more dark and savage ways.
- {Hello missionary, unfortunately I am in need of your services again.}
- After what you've done for this town, any reciprocation would still fall short. What do you need?
- {There was a brutal murder in Evermore, the suspect must have dropped this item. I need you to trace it like you did with Mados' relics.}
- Not such the tall order that I was fearing, although the time needed to perform the search can vary depending on a myriad of conditions.
- I'm sure to finish by tomorrow at the least, though a word of warning lest you grow frustrated with your eventual hunt; these searches aren't precise.
- I'll give you the general whereabouts and then you're on your own, sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.
- {Either you're taking a break or you've finished with that search, please tell me it's the latter.}
- Ha, rest assured, I'm not one to waste time. This search was one of the more interesting deductions I've engaged in.
- My exercise led me to the long since abandoned facility up in the mountains, unfortunately bearing the recent moniker of "Rejects Respite" - in light of the types of people who were brought there.
- Following that arcane scent more closely, I was brought to the bowels of that ruin - never thought it to be that extensive.
- If you want my advice - pass on this venture, that dark sanctum is better left undisturbed. But I see that same venturous glint in your eye from when we sought out those gauntlets.
- Godspeed Knight. Stay safe.
- {Do you have any further help or information about this place?}
- Hmmmmm, there is a particular device, rumored to have been hauled from that very facility, which found its way to us.
- This staff; Arcanists figured its for the trapping of souls, akin to the conventional method most mages employ when weaving the same spell.
- However this staff bears a symbol, which depicts a striking resemblance to what was etched on that grisly piece of "evidence" you provided me.
- May serve a further purpose from what we know - maybe a key? I'll leave that for you to find out. Bring it along just in case you find yourself up against any barrier which requires a mages touch.
- {Are there any other tasks that I could do to help the town?}
- My diary's been attended to, unfortunately, well for you - but Damian has taken up residence within the Manor. Made it into quite a pretty sight.
- Though then again, anything would be better to what Mortifayne had left the place in.
- Seeing as he's recently arrived, I'm sure he'd be very busy.
- {Hey, I heard the news from the priest back at Raven Spring, are you alright?}
- A tad better than what I was back there, that's for sure, however I feel as though my body is still in shock.
- {Yes, the priest said you collapsed after seeing Damian.}
- Damian, yes - what a dreadful sight - I thought it was some elaborate ruse, some twisted jest.
- Yet no one was laughing, no one in the temple even battered an eye at the state of Damian.
- {What do you mean with "the state of Damien"?}
- His veneer was torn a part, like some beast had worn a suit of flesh. Blood had followed his every step, pouring profusely, it was hideous.
- It seemed like a plot devised by Mortifayne, though even he would cringe at the sight of that aberration - yet no one did.
- Must have gone mad in that moment, or had been struck by some foul hallucinogenic poison.
- It became too intense, so I must have blacked out - upon my waking I saw that I was already on a cart heading here. You must tell the Priest of my gratitude, if I had spent any longer there..
- {You said your alteration exercises make you more sensitive, and more aware? Maybe you had seen Damian's real self?}
- Oh... that's very shaky grounds you're treading. The amount of questions that begs will have us succumb to a deep, fervent paranoia. I'd rather cling to the belief that I was struck by fever.
- Damian is bringing real change for the Reach, to think that some nefarious demon is in the guise of our prince would completely decimate the peoples hope.
- {Maybe the people should stop their idol worship and veneration of hereditary rule. Hoping that a higher power will bring you out of misery only ends in sorrow.}
- Easy for you to say, your mercenary traits aren't commonly shared among those who know nothing more than their lord and land. The notion that you will be without a master makes many serfs afeard.
- {Progress is always scary, this system only results in repression and stagnation - the children will have to move out eventually.}
- A fine metaphor, were it so easily applied to the grander scene - Yet I do share your sentiments, I just can't imagine a system beyond what we have.
- I feel tired, maybe we will speak later. As for now, let me rest as I still have that lingering distaste from what transpired.
- {RavenSpring*}
- Ha, slip of the tongue. I'm not sure why I uttered that foul name. Anyway, see you soon knight.
- Knight, is that you?! It's been two weeks and we've heard nary a peep regarding your whereabouts. Where were you?
- {It's too complex for a summary, what's happening here? Are you leaving?}
- Exactly what it looks like, there's too many mouths to feed here so we need to find refuge for those still coming.
- What an utter disaster, the entire kingdom in a frenzy seemingly overnight.
- {It was a long time coming, you know this missionary...}
- *Sigh* Knight, your words when we last spoke. They haunted me then, and now I can't get them out of my mind. You were right, all the tension was leading to this.
- Immediately after what happened in Arnima, with my bout of madness - there was clarity. In my dreaming it all became clear...
- When your lucid, you repress. I repressed the thoughts that the order we clung to could ever slip away. Even through the worst of it I believed that we'd eventually settle back to normal...
- And with that clarity I knew that change was here - no longer a dream but an undeniable reality. Now the mad have swapped places, with those who believe in order raving through the night.
- Phantasmagoria.
- {You need to rest Missionary}
- Only fools would rest now, we need to move. In this dark hour of our history - the greatest trait is vigilance.
- I'll keep tending to the survivors, making use of my skills wherever I can. Least I can do *Sigh* damnation, the priest shouldn't have sent me here.
- Could have helped, prevented some of the worst elements from spilling out. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking... can't change the past, but we can change the future.
- {What is happening here?}
- Something that unfortunately needs to be done, since the gods don't seem to be lending their divine aid any time soon. At least their suffering is at an end now.
- {You're burning people in there?!}
- Afflicted peoples who had resigned themselves to this fate, of their own volition. A more altruistic act than any I could deign to accomplish, the town remains safe.
- This plague encroaches ever east - even these drastic measures may fall short of what may come beyond today.
- {Does this have anything to do with the witchmen?}
- Probably, though I sincerely hope not, those madmen are already terrifying as it is - but to know they can direct plagues and the like? A truly dreadful image.
- [Scene where player emerges from Oblivion gate]
- Bloody Ma-, almost took her name in vein - what in all the hells was that?
- {You saw that demon run from the gate, I take it?}
- It was definitely something - demon or not - downright sinister looking regardless. I had feared the worst for you.
- I've not the courage to face such beasts friend - hiding away behind the manifold contraptions - eager to see that thing gone.
- {Well I'm here, and that strange creature is gone, hopefully. It was not hostile however, it only rambled. }
- You spoke with it? What did it say?
- {It talked of freedom and its wants, was hard to understand the context.}
- The priests advise those haunted by accursed spirits to shield their ears, as one can easily find themselves raveled in their plots.
- Though you seem to retain sanity, not even the temptations of Oblivion can sway you.
- {It takes a lot to win me over.}
- Now if only this demon had some gold to spare! Haha...
- This has been an enthralling experience friend, fraught with perils and terrors - yet exciting nonetheless. However, we've got what we came for.
- And on that note, we should make ways for the - relative - safety down south.
- {I agree, I can only stomach enough mystery for one day.}
- That's where we're different friend, I could go over every stone surface in this vast hollow - yet without you, any dangers left here would surely have me perish.
- Besides, I'm famished. And I'm not keen in taking up the diet of whatever lurks down here.
- {You go on ahead, I'm going to stay here a moment.}
- Well since you're staying, I'd see no reason for us to part ways. As one could consider the journey back just as dangerous - especially without a hardy warrior like yourself.
- Leave whenever you're ready, I wont let my curiosity get in the way.
- [Scene where Missionary comes across an Oblivion gate]
- This gate, the very same gate that became symbolic during the Oblivion crisis. What vile practices were the Dwemer involved in here?
- [Scene where Missionary comes across ruin, impressing him]
- By the divines, what a sight. The Dwemer were a vain society weren't they? Then again, most Elves share the same trait.
- ...Beg my pardon, meant no offense.
- [Misc Dialogue]
- The gauntlets are deeper within this complex, my exercise drew my mind towards a large cavity within the mountains.
- Never been this far north, sad to see how any form of civility completely vanishes as you trek through these woods.
- Really should have put on another layer of clothing.
- Fantastic, I was doubting that we'll ever find these gauntlets in this sprawling ruin. Now to return them back to Arnima, although I would love to stay here for research.
- Have to wonder how the Witchmen survive this weather, with nothing but a rabbit's pelt at times.
- The gate's still as sturdy as ever, probably withstood the beating of a thousand cudgels from those savages.
- Yet with a simple twist of a key, she blows open.
- A tad warmer down here, wouldn't you say? Must be the steam running through the veins of this complex.
- Keep your eyes on the floors of this ruin, it may be millennia since it last saw life but the traps here are still as deadly.
- Who would have thought a race capable of such staggering architecture could simply vanish.
- [PANIC, RUNNING AWAY]
- Help! I don't want to die!
- Spare me!
- By the gods! Someone help me!
- [PLAYER YIELDS]
- You fool, you'll get yourself killed.
- [Player Stealing]
- Cretin! Give that back!
- I'll have you hanged thief!
- [Friend is murdered]
- To oblivion with you, murderer!
- [Dying words]
- This is how it ends...
- The world fades...
- My service is over...
- [NPC being hit]
- Calm yourself!
- You fool!
- Augh.
- No!
- Ah!
- Eugh!
- [TAUNT DIRECTED TOWARD DAEDRA]
- Divines spit on you.
- I'll send you to oblivion myself.
- What in oblivion are you?!
- [TAUNT DIRECTED TOWARD GENERIC ENEMY, ]
- Make your prayers.
- Let's settle this.
- I have the gods behind me.
- Your end nears.
- Your last mistake.
- [NPC REACTING TO PLAYER ACTIONS]
- Impressive!
- Careful with that.
- Hey now, you'll harm someone.
- Knock it off.
- That isn't something you see everyday.
- Should consider joining a choir with that voice. [Sarcasm]
- You dismay the Divines.
- [NPC REACTING TO DEAD BODY]
- More grim scenes like these aren't helping.
- No one should forgo burial in death. Someone help me here.
- [GOODBYE]
- Bye now.
- Bless your journeys.
- Keep safe.
- Farewell.
- [PLAYER SHOVING NPC]
- Watch it.
- Mind where you're going.
- [HELLO]
- Hello?
- ...Something you need?
- Get on with it.
- Blessings upon you.
- Make a prayer.
- Let's hope for another adventure! Anything to get us out of town.
- You heard that brass thing, we have to find those machines.
- Gods, it's hard to stomach the stench these falmer wallow in.
- Deeper friend, many mysteries waiting for us no doubt!
- Welcome knight.
- In need of anything?
- [NPC HORRIFIED]
- Can't believe what just happened.
- Come on, let's go.
