"There was the sound again, and to Sloane, it sounded like some-body taking a cautious step, putting his foot down carefully, but not completely quiet-normal hearing would have missed it,
but with the headphones turned up, he could hear a mouse fart, and somebody was skulking around out there. He couldn't tell exactly where, the earphones weren't directional in the same way his own ears were, but it wasn't too far away, whoever it was. Or whatever it was."pg.207 chpt.25


"The footfalls stopped. Sloane heard a sound then he couldn't identify. A chittering, kind of tongue-chattering thing,
soft, and close. Something like cicada, but bigger, louder, deeper... Sloane felt a cold rush envelope him. The offworld hunter.
It knew he was here, somehow. Slowly, very slowly, Sloane turned his head to he left. Just in time to see the air shimmer five meters away and the spaceman materialize from nothing. There was a snick and Sloane saw the twin blades on the back of its right forearm extend and lock into place.The thing was looking right at him. It made a noise, said something gutteral and jagged, and spread its arms wide. It meant to slice him up with those knives."pg.208 chpt.25
