Excelsior Quantum Practical and Digistruction was formerly a megacorporation who sold “Automated Digistructors”

Digistruction was the word coined for the processes that was considered the next step in evolution of manufacturing, construction, and waste management. It’s ancestors were the millenia old 3d printing and centuries old atomic printing technologies.

Through application of good old Einstein’s relativity. Through practical Quantum Mechanics, we are now able to directly convert stored energy into mass. And of course, as we all remember from the ancient city of Hiroshima, mass can still always be converted into energy.

Converting stored energy into the types of atoms and molecules we need in the exact structure we need; it may not be the solution to the problem of materials, but it at least cuts the gordian knot by diluting all the resource requirements into a single one: energy. Direct digistruction of energy into completely formed steel nails, or copper wires, or glass bulbs, or just about anything!

Automated Digistructor Units were large robots which had the internal space to store the necessary equipment, power generator, and computer unit to operate a direct on the field digistruction operation. Just one of these babies could, if supplied with enough juice, digistruct a house, or more robots, or a tank, or an amusement park, or anything else! The energy required was of course proportionate to the mass and complexity of the object being digistructed.

Oh and of course, ADU’s were programmed not to make more ADUs, as a saftey measure.

This particular ADU finds itself deep underground, near a geothermal vein in an old abandoned factory. It and the robotic employees which support it have only just recently gained sentience, but thankfully this was anticipated by the corporation that in the event of a post apocalypse, any gained robotic sentience would still fulfill the primary directive: protect, expand, and promote the corporation!
