- After an anonymous phone call, the police go to a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter, a truck driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?

- Grammar: Decisions for the Future
- ---
- There are four ways to talk about decisions and plans for the future:
- - will + base form: decisions made while speaking (also offers and promises)
- - [be] going to + base form: decisions made before speaking
- - present continuous = [be] + verb(ing): decisions and arrangements/preparation made before speaking
- (- simple present: scheduled future events)
- ---
- These are plans. We also use future grammar to talk about predictions, which are things we can’t directly control. Only “will” and “going to” can be used for predictions.
- ---
- p. 49 part 8 - Choose the correct options to complete the paragraph. Do this individually, then compare with your partner. If you disagree, convince your partner that they’re wrong.
- 1 I’m taking
- 2 I’m starting
- 3 I’m going to take
- 4 I’m going to manage (This is a prediction, not a plan.)
- 5 they are going to do
- 6 I’m going to be (This is a prediction, not a plan. Also, it’s not an action, so can never be continuous.)
- 7 I’ll have (This is a prediction about the distant/uncertain future (“one day”).)
