  3. ---
  4. Homework:
  5. Explore the websites ebay, etsy, alibaba, craigslist, and other sites where you can buy things.
  6. How do you buy things from the site? What is unique about the site? What kinds of things does the site sell?
  7. Think of some other focuses or business models you could use to make a new website. (Tomorrow you will design a store site, and you need to think of what features will make it interesting compared to similar websites.)
  8. ---
  9. ebay: individuals buy directly from other individuals (ebay doesn’t sell anything itself), sellers decide about the method of payment and shipping options, it is an auction site (most things don’t have a fixed price)
  10. etsy: individuals buy directly from other individuals, the focus is handmade items, if you sell multiple items you can have an etsy “shop”, where buyers can look at all of them
  11. alibaba: it sells everything (individuals can buy anything), it can ship nearly anywhere, individuals buy from many different companies all over the world, Chinese company
  12. craigslist: online classified ads (like what used to be in most newspapers), with listings for jobs, services, dating, housing, and buying and selling items; most interactions are individual-to-individual (you buy directly from another person); no information about product quality, no feedback or ratings; there are many scams
  13. groupon: sells coupons for discounts at many different companies, and if a certain number of people buy one there’s an additional deal
  14. store websites (bestbuy.com, etc.): individuals can buy from one particular company, with a bigger selection of things than they can find in a store
  15. ---
  16. In your group, choose a product focus, pricing system, buyer/seller connection structure, payment structure, and anything else you think is important. Design a website with these features. Give it a name and draw the front page of the website.
  17. (Photocopiable communicative activity while the other group finishes.)
  18. ---
  19. Explain your concept to the other group. Ask and answer questions.
  20. ---
  21. Error Correction:
  22. *I can put these books on ours website for sell to another person.
  23. -> I can put these books on our website to sell to another person.
  24. *If you wanna to buy a book, you can buy in ours website too.
  25. -> If you wanna buy a book / If you want to buy a book, you can buy it on our website too.
  26. *You wouldn’t be lie.
  27. -> You wouldn’t be lied to.
  28. *Someone lie you.
  29. -> Someone lies to you.
  30. *You can chat to the seller.
  31. -> You can chat with the seller. / talk to / send messages to
  32. ---
  33. Remember: to + verb / for + noun
  34. ---
  35. p. 113 - product descriptions
  36. part 3 - decide which information in the description is irrelevant and unnecessary, and decide which sentences in part 3b can be added to the description, and where they belong
  37. 3a unnecessary information: It was a gift from my parents. New house is in the country so we are going to have rustic-themed decor.
  38. 3b useful information: 1 (after “used condition”), 3 (after “good condition”), 5 (after “Local pick-up preferred.”)
  39. ---
  40. Order of adjectives chart (handout).
  41. Opinions come before facts. What if I have two opinions?
  42. a beautiful and interesting woman / a beautiful, interesting woman
  43. two colors: red and white / black and white (this is a list, so no comma between two things)
  44. a red, white, and blue flag (with three items, we use a comma)
  45. Size and age adjectives are sometimes (more or less) opinions: “a big, friendly dog”
  46. (Exact numbers are facts: “a friendly 40-kg dog”)
  47. ---
  48. Homework: Think of a product that your website (that you designed in class) would sell. Write the description page for that product. (You should look at descriptions on sites like Amazon or craigslist for more ideas.)
  49. (If you didn’t design a website, write a description for eBay, like in the book.)
