- If you're interested in the business side of manga publishing:
- facweb.cs.depaul.edu/noriko/
Japa
nTrip08/JETRO-market_info_manga.p
df
- Oversea licensee pays a % royalty (quoted 7~10% of gross) to the domestic publisher (important: not directly to the mangaka), but before that they also pay a Guarantee Minimum amount that they negotiated per volume. That's the amount the licensee are required to pay even if the manga turned out to be a bust. So in this situation, assuming Hidamari volumes are doing quite well state-side, every volume you buy oversea will eventually mean money-in-the-pocket for Aoki Ume.

- Interview with Joan Navarro of Glènat España
- >This contract basically includes a royalty, that means a certain percent of the title’s price (In U.S. that would be the MSRP), that ranges from the 7% to 8%, minus tax. And a G.M. (Guaranteed Minimum).
- >Let’s suppose the manga in question is sold at $9.99, since the tax is 8% then the royalty is calculated in 9.1908. That means that a contract with 7% would pay .70 cents per issue, again assuming it’s a $9.99 book. And rounding it up, since the 7% of $9.99 isn’t exactly .70.
- >The G.M. depends on lots of factors, in example a best-seller like Naruto would have a higher G.M. than say an old niche manga about a Samurai that lost one arm and now plays Jazz… LOL ok, it was an extreme example, but you get the point
- >BTW I don’t really know how many volumes any of the titles in the U.S. market prints so I don’t know an estimate of the G.M. for the U.S., but in Spain that would be between 1,000 euros (7% royalty with a G.M. of 2,000 printed books) and a max of 1,730 (8% and 3,000).
- >As I said, those are the numbers for the average title, series like “Naruto”, “BLEACH” or “Death Note” have higher G.M.s but that´s not important since this kind of titles sell well anywhere.
