- Sonic Story:
- Sonic, being the titular character of the game, has the longest story and run of any category. Sonic has a mix of levels that span from entirely skipped (casinopolis, ice cap, final egg) to very platforming-heavy (sky deck, lost world, red mountain). With the unique ability to spindash (especially with "TAS spindashing"), he can move as fast as you are willing to execute. Due to the length of the category and the raw speed at which sonic can control at, it's one of the harder stories to pick up or master. There are some tricks that can be difficult for newer runners (casinopolis skip) but overall the story isn't intrinsically difficult although it has a lot of moving parts. Play if you like challenging, high-speed movement where the sky is the (speed) limit.
- Tails:
- Tails, with the aid of the jet anklets, has a major skip for every (platforming) level he's in. Additionally, he has two snowboarding levels, Ice Cap and Sand Hill. These skips create a skill floor that can be a little challenging for anyone looking to play the category. Play if you like invalidating level design and don't mind an alternate playstyle and a solid chunk of autoscrollers.
- Knuckles:
- Although famous for its large amount of RNG, this story is largely about case recognition and execution. Although remembering piece locations can seem daunting, this is one of the easier stories to get into provided you know where everything is. He doesn't have any big skips or tricks outside of Lost World and debatably Chaos 2, but has some challenging hubworld movement in the form of the jungle before lost world. Play if you're looking for something a bit on the easier side that requires on-the-fly decision-making.
- Amy:
- This is one of the shortest stories, with a total of three levels. Amy is home to simultaneously crazy skips and creative platforming, and is home to one of the most challenging levels in the game, Hot Shelter. However, with this intricacy comes technical demands, and the RNG variance in final egg is legendarily run-ending. Play if you enjoy a challenging, shorter run that rewards itself for clean play if you don't mind the doors at the end.
- Gamma:
- Gamma's story is home to movement that is very easy to learn but very difficult to master. His mode change mechanic rewards runners for moving in straight lines, and is home to the biggest sequence break in the game through glitched route, the route of choice. The bosses, platforming, and tricks are very easy to understand and do at an entry level but challenging to do fast. However, missing these skips once you have them in a run can prove fatal. As a result, once you hit all the tricks, improvement is measured in milliseconds rather than seconds. Play if you want a run that although easy at first gets detail-oriented very fast.
- Big:
- Big's fishing levels are surprisingly the vast minority of the run, and although they have significant variance, most of the time in Big's story is spent moving from level to level. Although getting froggy's attention can be frustrating at first, it's a shorter story with a surprising amount of technicality as you get better. Play if you don't mind a bit of a slower-paced run with some fishing in it.
- Super Sonic:
- By far the shortest category, this combines a very short series of hubworld segments as sonic with Perfect Chaos at the end. Due to its length it's easier to pick up and is a gentle introduction to understanding how Sonic moves. Play if you like super short runs or are interested in sonic but are on the fence about his inner workings.
