  1. Hanthos In my opinion Derek Smart has shown that he was not so much anti-SC but more anti-Chris Roberts and anti-David Braben back in 2012.

  4. But it all went downhill from there when the Star Citizen Kickstarter turned out to be a rousing success. Even Derek himself quickly jumped on board during the last 24 hours (evident by the date on his Citizen Card flair item).
  5. But not because he wanted to support the project, but rather because he apparently believed his $250 'legacy backer' pledge would entitle him to some kind of legal rights which in 2015 he tried to enact by writing nasty blogs, sending demand letters, wanting to see CIG's financials, ordering Chris Roberts to be replaced by a project director or something (and then nominating himself as if he viewed himself as being qualified for that position).
  6. To many this was viewed as looking very similar to the Quest Online takeover where Derek was first brought on board as an advisor and somehow managed to convince investors to let him take control. Then he fired the original creators for 'insurbordination' if you can believe that. And we've seen how Derek Smart subsequently ran Alganon into the ground as he was apparently only interested in obtaining the engine tech for his own game.
  7. But regarding spacegames in general we can look further and Derek is showing a pattern regarding comments aimed towards other spacegames like EvE Online and Star Wars Galaxies where Derek Smart apparently viewed any spacegame that wasn't his as inferior to his own 'games' (well, his ideas at any rate).

  9. However his contempt (some would even attribute it as jealousy or even hatred) for Chris Roberts has a special place in history and can be traced back to 1990. Back then Derek had found a publisher for his Battlecruiser 3000AD project and went to his first convention as a developer. But a few hours in the publisher cancelled the deal because the press wasn't impressed with it when considering other titles in the genre. According to Smart the press was referring to Chris Roberts who had just released Wing Commander which was met with critical acclaim (and went down in history as a classic).

  11. But instead of taking it in stride and improving upon his own game Derek started sending nasty messages to Origin; demanding they cease publishing Wing Commander or he would sue as they were stealing his ideas. The guys over at Origin had never heard of the guy and told him "Good luck with that" and ofcourse Derek never sued. It took Derek 7 more years and went through several publishers before BC3000AD v1.0 was finally released in 1997 by Take-Two Interactive and it was a bug-ridden mess (even moreso because Derek apparently had been actively sabotaging development and causing delays while working on a separate personal version than the one he was supposed to be working on with the team).

  13. From 1990 on it looks like 26 years later Derek has not changed one bit; even to the point of proclaiming that "they started this war!" and pretending that he is the victim in all of this or wants to be seen as some kind of saviour. However, to me he seems to be going full Captain Ahab and deems Chris Roberts, CIG and the Star Citizen project as 'the enemy'.
  14. He has also shown that he is not afraid to stalk/doxx Chris Roberts' family (his wife and children) as well as employees from CIG and has already been banned from numerous forums and comments sections, shadowbanned from Reddit for making a hate-sub against another individual who had called him out on a lie as well as getting a 24 hour suspension on Twitter at one point (for doxxing as I recall).
  15. An article on The Escapist back in 2015 was also found out to have been orchestrated by him containing wild claims of illegal conduct against Sandi Gardiner (racism and ageism), made-up 'sources' that were supposedly verified (generic blank HID card counts as verification these days?) and fake Glassdoor reviews that conveniently sprang into being during that time as 'evidence'. That Derek was behind it (when The Escapist claimed he was not) has later been verified by several gaming related sites when they stated that Derek had been shopping around his story and trying to find someone who would run with it. Not to mention that he himself could not keep his own mouth shut and had to gloat by telling CIG that something was coming even before the article went up. Like some cartoon villain twirling his mustache while revealing his evil scheme... *rollseyes

  17. To me he is just a spiteful old man who blames his own failiures as a game developer on everyone but himself. And I expect that once he reads this he will try to dig up my personal information and threaten to sue me for having an opinion. So I say to him: Good luck with that! ;)
