  47. The server shouldn't be nodding off on the job. Fired!!!!
  48.
  49. How recent did the delays start?
  50.
  51. Have you tried disabling all plugins...log out....and then log back in to see if the delay still occurs?
  52.
  53. Are there common plugins between both websites?
  54.
  55. Any issues with the drives?
  56.
  57. If these are new websites, they should load quickly, although that depends on how many plugins, and which plugins. There are some that are very load intensive due to bad coding, and slow down everything. Or there are instances where a plugin was perfect and then a recent update (or complete code change which is not an update) creates issues.
  58.
  59. Any recent changes anywhere in the server?
  60. Hi, and thanks for replying
  61.
  62. The site are basic wordpress installations, the only thing really installed is wordfence, Yoast, litespeed cache, query monitor
  63.
  64. This server only has two wordpress sites installed at present
  65.
  66. I have 6 other servers with lots more wordpresses and similar setups - same type of server, litespeed etc.. basically same company and hardware, and roughly the same plugins ( I like simplicity )
  67.
  68. Query monitor doesn't show anything as an issue even on initial log in when slow
  69.
  70. Once I login for first time, it can take some time to get me through to the wp-admin panel then all is fine. if i log out and go back in after ie 1 minute its fine (instant) , if i leave it 20mins~ plus then its back to a long delay, like its doing a callout and waiting
  71.
  72. I know wordpress checks for updates and will try and dns for sites - so Im thinking this could be the issue initially being slow to resolve
  73.
  74. I have tried downloading from root ssh and get full 100MB/s (2 x 10GB, 5 x 1GB test files, pings, MTR everything fine
  75.
  76. I have two 250GB SSD's in Raid1 - not sure how to test or check these
  77.
  78.
  79. Cheers

  85. Since you know the server characteristics I assume you have access to the command line, so have you tried using the usual performance tools like "top" and "iotop" to find what is using all the resources?
  86.
  87. Also a browser extension like "Performance Analyzer" for Chrome will tell you where the time is being spent.
  88.
  89. Have you checked the Apache error logs and access logs for each site? Very often they will tell you what the problem is.
  90.
  91. Since you also say you have more than one site, have you tried installing a bare WordPress site (no plugins, standard theme) to check that it's OK? That would tell you whether it's a server problem or a WordPress problem.
  92.
  93. Is the problem intermittent or constant? Intermittent problems like this can be caused by backups running, or by a search engine indexing your site or a DoS attack. If it's a constant problem but only in WordPress it's more likely to be a plugin conflict or a misconfiguration which you can find by checking error logs and your browser console, turning on debug mode in WordPress and error reporting in PHP. If you're loading content from external sites (fonts, ads, social media...) then it could be those sites and a the problem should go away on a "bare" WordPress installation. If it's a constant problem even outside WordPress it's probably a resource exhaustion (CPU, memory, disk, network...) or a DoS attack and the command line tools will show you where.

  99. Are the servers Managed or UnManaged?

  105. If they are managed, then you could ask the host to look into this for you. They should have monitoring and tools in place to let you know the condition of the drives. Sometimes even identical hardware/software will have a slight difference in performance. I've also seen the odd time when a new server had a small issue from day one. Fortunately it was quickly fixed before going into production.

  111. Try disabling all plugins. Then log out, wait 2 minutes, and then log back in.
  112.
  113. Any mistakes within cache settings?
  114.
  115. Any recent DNS changes?
  116.
  117. If everything is identical, and no major issues are present (hopefully) then it may be a minor setting somewhere. Even some great plugins will have a setting that should not be used, and end up creating issues that helping.
  118.
  119. Have you looked in the server logs to see if anything else is happening when you're logging in? You should see your IP in the logs, and then see what's happening in the background. That may also help to pinpoint the delay.
  120. Just to let you all know I have narrowed the issue down to wordfence, one deactivated the problem has disapeared
  121.
  122. On my other servers this doesnt cause any issues to the sites. so I will delve in to tomorrow further

  146. Glad you narrowed it down.
  147.
  148. It's been some years using the plugin, but deactivate the Live View feature. That adds extra usage. I believe there is another setting that can be disabled as well.
  149. These two settings should be disabled if you are having slowness issues.
