- Hi! So you requested a team based around Mega Altaria and here it is. This was actually extremely difficult to build because Mega Altaria is a really shit mon lol. It has its niche but nothing else, and that niche isn’t that great either. I thought of using a Dragon Dance / Facade / Earthquake / Roost set, but that’s basically a shitty Mega Salamence and isn’t very interesting (plus is still kinda bad). So, that’s where I came up with this set…
- Altaria-Mega @ Altarianite
- Ability: Pixilate
- Level: 50
- EVs: 244 HP / 124 Def / 28 SpD / 112 Spe
- Bold Nature
- IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Spe
- - Roost
- - Hyper Voice
- - Toxic
- - Cotton Guard / Flamethrower
- The dedicated EV spread allows you to outspeed max speed Tyranitar and anything slower. You’re 3hko’d by Mega Charizard Y, and live Naganadel’s sludge wave which is pretty cool. The rest was poured into defence to compliment cotton guard. With this set, you beat Landorus-Therian / Mega Charizard X and Y / Mega Blaziken / Mega Salamence / Garchomp / Tyranitar / Mega Kangaskahn all in 1v1 situations. You also toxic fat stuff like Porygon2 / Cresselia / Hippowdon so you’re not setup fodder, and these are all pokemon that like to come in on Mega Altaria. Unfortunately, you’re walled by literally any steel… which is where the next pokemon comes in!
- Magnezone @ Electrium Z
- Ability: Magnet Pull
- Level: 50
- EVs: 108 HP / 4 Def / 196 SpA / 28 SpD / 172 Spe
- Modest Nature
- IVs: 0 Atk
- - Thunderbolt
- - Toxic
- - Flash Cannon
- - Hidden Power [Fire]
- EV spread allows you to outspeed 4 speed Mega Vensaur and anything slower. HP investment allows you to live a non boosted fire blast from Naganadel, with the spd meaning choice scarf modest Tapu Lele 3hko’s you. Rest was poured into spa for damage. The idea of this is that you switch in comfortably against Celesteela and Ferrothorn, two giant and common walls for Mega Altaria. Also synergises really well with Mega Altaria since Magnezone is a good switch in for fairy moves that threaten Altaria while Altaria switches in on fire moves that threaten Magnezone. Also a good Mimikyu check assuming you can break its disguise. Steel / Electric is also a great defensive typing, allowing you to safely switch in to mons like Porygon2 and Tapu Koko (which is also a reason why I added Magnezone). Toxic is on this for the same reason as Mega Altaria, just to bop fat staff you can’t break. Electrium is a nuke, not much more to it. Hits through Celesteela’s protect which is also pretty cool! Magnezone patches up some issues but leaves us really weak to mons like Landorus-Therian and Metagross, which leads to the introduction of…
- Porygon2 @ Eviolite
- Ability: Analytic
- Level: 50
- EVs: 244 HP / 164 Def / 100 SpD
- Relaxed Nature
- IVs: 0 Atk
- - Ice Beam
- - Discharge
- - Foul Play
- - Recover
- This spread minimizes the chance of being 2hko’d by Adamant Mega Salamence’s double edge and choice scarf Tapu Lele’s psychic (like, should live 15/16 times). More importantly, it’s a solid counter to Landorus-Therian and Mega Metagross (yes it has hammer arm but that’s low enough in usage to not really worry about). This also solidifies our matchup vs Mega Gyarados and gives us a better answer to Aegislash that aren’t running toxic. Also lives any +2 hit from Naganadel except for the z move. Moves are pretty standard, bolt beam coverage with discharge over thunderbolt for the paralysis chance. From here I noticed no electric immunity and lack of offensive pressure, so thus we say hello to…
- Mamoswine @ Focus Sash
- Ability: Thick Fat
- Level: 50
- EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
- Adamant Nature
- - Earthquake
- - Ice Shard
- - Icicle Spear
- - Stealth Rock / Rock Tomb
- This was a no brainer for me. Sash allows this mon to check practically every top tier offensive threat in the meta. Naganadel, Blaziken, Mega Metagross, Mega Salamence, Landours-Therian, Koko, you name it. Also gives us some priority which is really really nice. You can use rock tomb over stealth rock if you feel too weak to Mimikyu and Mega Charizard Y, but I really like rocks support. Up to you though! Next slot called for something that can take hits and break fatter mons. I introduce you to…
- Tapu Fini @ Wiki Berry
- Ability: Misty Surge
- Level: 50
- EVs: 252 HP / 12 Def / 4 SpA / 4 SpD / 236 Spe
- Bold Nature
- IVs: 0 Atk
- - Taunt
- - Surf
- - Moonblast
- - Nature's Madness
- Tapu Fini is amazing here. Provides terrain support which is nice vs other tapus though works against our own toxic measures a bit, but not a huge problem so long as you keep this in mind. Plus, this allows us to beat Hippowdon 1v1 with Mega Altaria if terrain is up which is cool! But yeah, I felt like lead Hippowdon is a very annoying mon to face against so Tapu Fini plays an important part here. Pretty standard moveset, lets us beat fat mons 1v1 like Porygon2, Toxapex, Celesteeka, Chansey, Cresselia, and more. Stall was also an issue for the team which Tapu Fini patches up nicely. The EV spread allows us to outspeed jolly Breloom, with 12 defence alongside a bold nature for some bulk. Wiki berry greatly improves our longevity and lets us combat Blaziken as well, and sometimes even Mimikyu. On to the last pokemon, the 6th slot is always the hardest but I decided to opt for…
- Celesteela @ Leftovers
- Ability: Beast Boost
- Level: 50
- EVs: 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 SpD
- Relaxed Nature
- - Flamethrower
- - Leech Seed
- - Protect
- - Heavy Slam
- Gives the team some much needed fire coverage whilst providing an important ground immunity. There’s not a whole lot more of a reason I added this in to be honest, pretty straight forward pokemon but hard to break. The spread lets it live Thunderbolt from scarf Tapu Koko, with the rest poured into defence to better combat the likes of Mega Metagross, Mega Gyarados, Mega Salamence, and the list goes on. Leech seed + protect is also an amazing combo, Celesteela is really fat and annoying to deal with. I wanted something offensive in this slot but couldn’t quite fit it, the team is really fat and slow so Celesteela fit nicely with its own way of providing pressure.
- Ya, that’s it for the team! Be careful when using Mega Altaria though, as much as you might want to use it every game you still need to pick wisely. If you do bring it, mega evolve it asap because it’s kind of tricky to safely mega evolve. Also be weary of Heatran, Mega Gengar and Mega Lucario. Three enormous threats I found whilst laddering and testing the team. Here are a few replays from ladder and a few vs some friends in the battle spot room. Enjoy it my dude!
