  10. Imagine thinking it isnt about demography but about some immediate zero-sum game. There are reasons to not want most refugees which dont apply here. This is emotional, details are crushed in favor of a heuristic you're attached to. There isnt a reason to be against all refugees given here, except the slogan... obey the slogan because you dont need a reason

  19. Seems to be the logical conclusion. He will probably say "must stand on your own" but in the world of national entities and groups and geopolitics, you need alliances to effectively do that. Hell, unless you're a hardcore libertarian or objectivist you think even people need assistance to become productive (and/or that it is better to help them do so)

  21. The Christian thing, only said because he expressed a sentiment that falling somehow makes one unworthy of aid or charity. It's not a political issue when you express something philosophical like that. You're of course permitted to make reasoned or political cases why it may be unwise to help in this way or at this time, since higher order decision making must run on calculation or at least heuristics (and is) but this is deeper. And he makes character arguments and judgments all the time. Even relying on them. And generally sees what he perceives as insincerity or a lack of authenticity as really bad
  22.
  23. And it's sort of dumb argument in another sense: paralyzes any attempts to come back from a failure since your failure justifies whatever bad happens to you apparently. It's a larp, divorced from reality where not everything is a matter of will and you can simply lose if your elites decide it is too much trouble for them

  25. All people have a decline and fall at some point, and it's usually for quite a while. Coming back is still possible

  28. Actually okay with helping people (to stabilize an area), and it is gonna happen anyway even if I dont care for it. May as well use it well.

  31. Someone said it means we'd have to help every African group getting rekt. It doesnt since opportunistic inconsistency is a political asset, especially out of power and/or in polarized times when you arent decided what is sufficient precedent anyway or how anything will work really. But it's a fair objection, though I tend to argue for opportunistically using what we dislike as long as it exists
