  2. Remember back in school when you first learned about all the other countries, their peoples, their histories, their politics, their wars? What we used to call “social studies”. Remember hearing stories about the the rise of authoritarianism, and how the people in those stories fought against oppression and fascism, or as was more common, how they just accepted it is inevitable or unstoppable? Perhaps you took part in a thought experiment in the class, where the teacher tried to answer questions about the horrors of the #Holocaust by pointing out that, just because your hair might not be blond or your eyes might not be blue or perhaps for some other reasons still unknowable to children, you could have also been a victim, if only by an accident of birth you happened to find yourself there, then? Remember looking around the class to see who of you would have survived it, and who might not?

  4. Remember the questions your classmates asked about how it ended, and more importantly, why didn’t anyone stop it at the time? I mean, wasn’t it obvious that it was wrong? Do you mean to say, teacher, that the people there knew it was wrong, and still did nothing? How is that possible? Do you remember saying that if you were there, you would have said something, done something? You would not have let it continue. How earnest you were. Remember your promise that if it were to happen again, and you were there, you would most certainly try to stop it. Because of course you had to. Because you must.

  6. Look around now. It’s happening again. Where are you now, child? What of that promise you made?
