  1. “We are to be civil toward them, which means that we should accord them respect and even (although it may seem unfashionable) that we should be polite.” (Carter 114), is a very wise statement for someone attempting to be a good moral person. People should always do what they would want other people to do to them. Manners should never be considered something that is out of date. They are what lead citizens to be respectable people that others admire and strive to be like. If there was ever a time when being polite was something that was looked down upon the world would be in very bad times. A certain amount of respect should be given, but in order to get the utmost respect from someone one has to earn it. Being a kind person in turn, returns kind things to come back on the individual, as Carter stated “I gobbled on that summer afternoon when I discovered how a single act of genuine and unassuming civility can change a life forever.” (120).
