  22. p. 65 exercise 8A - Repeat these sentences. What do you notice about the pronunciation of the structure words?
  23. We reduce them (much like we often reduce unstressed syllables within a word). This usually means we pronounce vowels like /ə/ and reduce or drop many consonants, especially ‘h’.
  24. Both “has” and “his” might be pronounced /əz/.
  25. ---
  26. /h/ is often dropped
  27. /v/ at the end of “have” and “of” can be dropped before a consonant
  28. /t/ can be flapped (like “city”) or pronounced like [ʔ] (glottal stop)
  29. ---
  30. There are many pairs of words that get reduced together:
  31. want to -> wanna
  32. got to -> gotta
  33. going to -> gonna
  34. don’t know -> dunno
  35. would have -> woulda
  36. shouldn’t have -> shouldna
  37. ---
  38. One-syllable structure words are almost always reduced.
  39. Longer words aren’t (completely) reduced, like “between” and “someone” and “myself”.
  40. (They still usually don’t have stress.)
  41. I live between Porter and Harvard.
  42. ---
  43. For most structure words, the important thins is that you can understand when native speakers reduce them. You don’t have to reduce them yourself.
  44. However, there are some words that we will misunderstand if you don’t reduce them.
  45. I can talk right now.
  46. I can’t talk right now.
  47. - If you don’t reduce “can” in sentences like the first one, most people will hear “can’t”.
  48. ---
  49. Homework (optional): Punctuate and pronounce this so it makes sense:
  50. I know that that that had had had had in front of it before.
  51. (Extra: James while John had had had had had had had had had had had the teacher’s approval.)
