- In the future, the Earth is engulfed with water when the polar ice caps melted, leaving the lands and civilization beneath the sea. In "Waterworld" drifters sail across the waters of the world on their man-made ships, trading for supplies and salvaging what is left of civilization, communities of survivors live in towns called "Atolls", and a force of evil pirates "The Smokers" travel across Waterworld in search of a mythical island called "Dryland". Arriving at an Atoll, a mysterious drifter without a name called The Mariner is sentenced to death when the community discovers he is a mutant. When the Atoll is attacked by The Smokers led by their evil leader Deacon, a woman named Helen and her adopted daughter Enola bribe The Mariner to take them to Dryland, believing The Mariner has been there. But the Mariner, Helen and Enola are pursued by Deacon and the Smokers, when The Mariner learns the tattoo on Enola's back is in reality a map that will lead them to Dryland...
- The polar ice caps have melted, and the earth is covered by water. The remaining people travel the seas, in search of survival. Several different societies exist. The Mariner falls from his customary and solitary existence into having to care for a woman and a young girl while being pursued by the evil forces of the Deacon.
- I found this movie to be very enjoyable.

The story is a little fantastic, but come on! It's sci-fi fantasy! Fantasy is supposed to stretch the imagination. NOT display total realism. That's why it's FANTASY.

The acting was pretty good. The villains are a little over-the-top but not to the point where it's annoying.

I thought the story was interesting, and the premise was fairly original. I found the depiction of life in a post-apocalyptic world to be very unique and intriguing. It really seems like a real, developed culture which has truly lived in the surrounding environment and has adapted to it.

The costuming and sets are really incredible in this film, and you can see where time was taken to make it look interesting and realistic.

The sea creature didn't look that real, but it's one lesser effect in an effects-heavy film. I wasn't all that upset by it.

I thought Costner had his role down, and I really enjoyed Jeanne Tripplehorn's performance. I thought she did an incredible job with her role. I also found Dennis Hopper to be very good as the main villain.

Overall, I felt this movie was very good and is worth watching. It is very original, has pretty good acting, great sets, great action, interesting story, great costumes, and an interesting atmosphere.

Really, this film deserves much better than its current rating of 5.5...
- People diss this movie not on its merits, but because they don't like Kevin Costner. It's the same pretentious attitude they have towards boy bands. The fact is, this isn't an entirely bad film, and it doesn't merit an overall score of "5". It's not the greatest, but it does the action well, Costner's Mariner is downright killer as the main character, and it has a great concept behind it.

So don't listen to the folks who diss this film. It's a good action-adventure flick with a great concept, excellent execution, and some inspired setups.
- Though Waterworld has some haunting underwater visual moments, the film's impact is weakened by flat dialogue, an overemphasis on jokeyness and a plot that, despite all those screenwriters, does not satisfactorily hold together at any number of points.
- The movie was heavily cut for the Theatrical Version. Several years later, the American network ABC aired a reconstructed Extended Version that ran more than 43 minutes longer than the original theatrical version, featuring scenes that were cut prior to the movie's theatrical release. Later on this version was released on DVD as well. In short... no.

Much of the melting would make no difference at all to sea levels. This is because a lot of the ice in the arctic and antarctic is sea ice (ice floats and the icebergs are floating on water). Most of this is already below the waterline - and the only reason a small percentage of an iceberg sticks out of the water is that ice is a bit less dense than water. As it melted the berg would submerge completely, but the ice would also shrink by the same amount as it turned back into water. So the overall effect on the oceans would be zero, or at least very close to it.

What would matter is the ice that is on land melting and that extra water running into the oceans. We don't have a perfect number for how much of this ice there is, but we do know it is reasonably close, and if all the ice on land melted it would raise sea levels by around 400 feet.

Given that most of the world's population lives within 400 feet of sea level this would certainly be a global catastrophe of unprecedented scale. But it would cover only a small fraction of the total surface. It is shown in a deleted scene that the Dry land they find at the end of the film is the top thousand feet or so of Mount Everest, which would indeed be the last place to flood if the ocean could rise that far. But in reality, a 400 foot sea level rise would leave the world with almost as much dry land as it has today, in percentage terms.

To give an example of how far the movie is from reality, consider that it shows the Mariner diving thousands of feet down to explore the sunken city of Denver. In reality a 400 foot sea level rise would leave Denver still almost a mile above sea level, and more than 1,000 miles inland from the coast. a5c7b9f00b
