  1. To the island, once round, and back,
  2. Said Targel to Ka'len that day.
  3. The last one past the harbor chain,
  4. for the winner's feast will he pay.
  6. Dolefaren sped round the island,
  7. her crew certain they'd win the race,
  8. but then they sighted Audrulyba again,
  9. With two Elven cutters giving chase.
  11. Ka'len called to his friend Targel,
  12. "Bring her behind us, we'll sail through!"
  13. But the Audrulyba remained still,
  14. As two more Elven cutters sailed into view.
  16. Then Audrulyba struck her banner,
  17. and raised Teiro's in its place.
  18. With the Dolefaren surrounded,
  19. Ka'len knew it was the end of the race.
  21. "He'll pay us as privateers!" cried Targel,
  22. "Like the old days, you and me."
  23. Ka'len lifted his head and whispered,
  24. "It can never be like it used to be."
  26. Ka'len, his wrathful eye fixed on Targel,
  27. Commanded the ship to ramming speed.
  28. Within moments, two of the cutters sank,
  29. the sharks their crews to feed.
  31. Finally catching Audrulyba,
  32. Dolefaren tore a hole in her bow.
  33. As one of the cutters returned the favor,
  34. Ka'len leapt up on to the prow.
  36. The cutter's archers opened fire,
  37. and soon Ka'len was armored with arrows.
  38. But Targel refused to meet him,
  39. As both ships sank lower into the narrows.
  41. "I submit, take me to Teiro,"
  42. Ka'len sobbed, sinking to his knee.
  43. "Take me to one of his healers", he cried
  44. "You were right all along, I now see."
  46. "I wish you hadn't had to learn this way,"
  47. Targel said, lifting Ka'len from the deck.
  48. Then Ka'len pulled an arrow from his chest,
  49. And plunged it into Targel's neck.
  51. Dolefaren and Audrulyba sank beneath the waves,
  52. never to be seen again.
  53. For in a race between two,
  54. Only one can win.
