  1. >The candy cigarette isn't filling the craving embedded in your brain.
  2. >They're addictive, she told you.
  3. >They'll kill ya, she told you.
  4. >You didn't listen.
  5. >However, the last thing you want to remind your partner of is mortality...
  6. >So candy sticks it is.
  7. >You pull it out of your mouth, the sugary dust lingering on your lips.
  8. >Usually on these cases, you lead the charge, searching for evidence and clues.
  9. >Not tonight, however.
  10. >In the darkness and rain, Pinks walks ahead of you, her destination sure.
  11. "You seem on the up and up here, Pinks."
  12. >She turns back only briefly.
  13. >"I know who to go to in times like this."
  14. >That comment is sobering.
  15. >Has she dealt with this kind of thing before?
  16.
  17. >Shaking off the dread, you look up towards the horizon.
  18. >It may be tough to see beyond the overcast sky, but the road leading out of town is quite clear.
  19. >As the light of the streetlamps fade, your eyes adjust, giving the world an almost grey filter.
  20. >Not many p0nies live out beyond the city borders.
  21. >Jack's got her farm beyond the picket fence, and the Everfree hosts critters you don't need running around this time of night.
  22. >As Pinks marches on, you can only wonder why you're coming here, of all places.
  23. >The cottage comes into view rather quickly.
  24. >Fluttershy.
  25. >A reclusive one, for certain.
  26. >Dame never likes to travel outside her hut.
  27. >You've only seen her on rare occasions yourself.
  28. >"Let me do the talking, 'kay buddy?"
  29. >The cheerful tone has a clearly serious baseline.
  30. >Giving her a silent nod, you approach the door.
  31. >Three knocks oughta do it.
  32.
  33. >"H-hello?"
  34. >The sound of fear coming from the hut normally would spark suspicion.
  35. >This, however, wasn't out of the ordinary.
  36. >"Flutters, it's me, Pinkie!"
  37. >Her old cheerful self.
  38. >You knew it was mostly an act.
  39. >Then again, it usually was.
  40. >No person or p0ny could be that cheerful on end.
  41. >Pinks was more than willing to put on a show to please her friends...
  42. >...or trick the suspects.
  43. >Whichever case this situation warranted, it worked like a charm.
  44. >The door opens the slightest bit, revealing a tuft of pink mane, hiding her eye.
  45. >"Hello Pinkie..."
  46. >She eyes you, giving you a once over.
  47. >"A-Anon..."
  48. >She wasn't too pleased.
  49. >When Pinkie came by, it usually meant a party of some sort.
  50. >When you came by, it was often to enjoy some company or browse her pets.
  51. >When you two were together...it meant business.
  52. >And your kind of business brings bad news.
  53.
  54. >"What...happened?"
  55. >Down to brass tacks, it seems.
  56. >Normally you'd be the bearer of bad news, but your partner wished to take the lead here.
  57. >"Would it be alright if we came in for a little bit?"
  58. >The reluctant yellow mare closed her door.
  59. >A quick frown from Pinks shows this wasn't according to plan.
  60. >Being shut out by Flutters...
  61. >That's a new one.
  62. >However, the surprise fades when you head the loud clicks from the mahogany frame.
  63. >A lock?
  64. >No, she opened the door.
  65. >A deadbolt?
  66. >You didn't even notice it when she opened the door at first.
  67. >The light clinking chains this time around catch your ear.
  68. >"Come in..."
  69. >She makes way for you and Pinks to enter.
  70. >Walking by the door, your suspicions are confirmed.
  71. >Silver chain deadbolt, right in the door's side.
  72. >Looks recent.
  73. >You probably haven't noticed it.
  74. >Her pets don't see you THAT often.
  75.
  76. >Walking in, she shuts the door behind you.
  77. >The house seems a bit...disorderly, to say the least.
  78. >Things falling off of shelves.
  79. >"Would you two like s-some tea, or..."
  80. >A raised pink marshmallow silences the stuttering 'Shy.
  81. >"Flutters, I need you to do me a teen~sy favor..."
  82. >'Favor'.
  83. >What a dirty word.
  84. >A favor is what you ask for when you have nothing to offer in return.
  85. >Flutters took a step back, knowing this all too well.
  86. >"W-what...?"
  87. >"Gilda."
  88. >A visible wince is seen from behind her mane, trying to expose as little of herself as possible.
  89. >You know this griffon all too well.
  90. >One of RD's dive buddies.
  91. >They go way back.
  92. >Recently, however, they had a falling out.
  93. >Pinks and Flutters were at the center of it all.
  94. >"She's gone Pinkie, she skipped town."
  95. >The flat tone coming from Flutters concerns you.
  96. >Just how deep is this wound?
  97. "We think she came back."
  98. >Pinks shoots you a glare.
  99. >Guess you should avoid speaking out of turn.
  100. >Or at all.
  101.
  102. >"We need to know where she is."
  103. >If it was possible to hide in plain sight, this dame would be invisible.
  104. >"I t-told you, she's gone..."
  105. >It was a blatant lie, of course.
  106. >You could tell, however, that she wished it was the truth.
  107. >"Where did she go, 'Shy?"
  108. >"I-I...I don't..."
  109. >She was about to crack.
  110. >The real question on your mind wasn't how much this mare could take...
  111. >It was why she felt the need to take it in the first place.
  112. >Pinks was ready to drop the bomb.
  113. >While this was no Sonic Rainboom, the shock would be about the same.
  114. >"Flutters...Rainbow's dead, and we think Gilda did it."
  115. >The tears flooded down her cheeks.
  116. >"I...I knew the skies...were supposed to be clear..."
  117. >She saw it coming a mile away.
  118. "I'm sorry for your loss."
  119. >Pinkie glanced back at you.
  120. >Sorry Pinks, it had to be said.
  121. >A few sniffles pass as Flutters picks her head up.
  122. >"I...know where Gilda went..."
  123.
  124. >Pinks flashes a victory grin.
  125. >Why was this such an important victory?
  126. >You would never suspect of Flutters running with griffons.
  127. >"She was looking for Rainbow..."
  128. >So she was after Dash.
  129. >How would Flutters...
  130. >"...I told her t-to try the Dash Fanclub..."
  131. >Then you notice it.
  132. >Her black eye, hidden by her mane this whole time.
  133. >The new deadbolt.
  134. >The disarray in her home.
  135. >Gilda's been through here.
  136. >You clench a fist, shaking lightly.
  137. >Hurting 'Shy...
  138. >"C'mon Anon, we gotta catch her before she skips town!"
  139. >Damn right.
  140. "Thank you for your help."
  141. >The black eye is hidden once more.
  142. >As you step out of the house, the last things you hear tear at your heart.
  143. >The lock of a deadbolt, and soft weeping.
  144.
  145. >You and Pinks are heading towards the clubhouse.
  146. >"Thanks for keeping quiet...for the MOST part..."
  147. "Sorry, but no matter the circumstance, you mourn the dead."
  148. >"I know...I'm just super duper focused on catching her."
  149. >You swipe another candy cigarette from her.
  150. >"Those things will kill ya, you know."
  151. >You serious?
  152. "Oh come on, toots. These ain't even the real deal!"
  153. >"Blood sugar is as important as blood pressure!"
  154. >Even in these trying times, Pinks has the energy and spirit...
  155. >...to tell you every little thing you enjoy is bad for you.
  156. >You munch the candy stick with vigor.
  157. >Blood sugar or not, you're keeping this vice.
  158. >"When I get my hooves on that griffon..."
  159. >The poison in her voice would kill anyone faster than your cigarettes, candy or not.
  160. "Cool it, Pinks."
  161. >The rain is starting to pick up again.
  162. >You wish the skies were cleared today.
  163. >Then all this wouldn't be happening.
  164.
  165. >In the forest, past the Apple Acres, lies the CMC Clubhouse.
  166. >They often held 'RD Fanclub' meetings here.
  167. >As you approach, something on the ground catches your eyes.
  168. >A large brown feather...
  169. >Bingo.
  170. "Pinks, I know she's in there."
  171. >Those words set off the powder keg that's been building up.
  172. >She charges ahead of you, up the treehouse steps and into the building.
  173. >"YOU!"
  174. >Guess you were right.
  175. >You hear louds crashes and banging...
  176. >Pinks must not be happy.
  177. >You rush in after her, and gaze upon the scene.
  178. >Pinks has Gilda pinned, her hooves stamping down her wings.
  179. >Try as she might, she can't budge Pinks.
  180. >"Let me go, please, let me go!"
  181. >Gilda pleads for her wing's freedom.
  182. >"YOU KILLED RAINBOW!"
  183. >She stomps down hard on Gilda's wing.
  184. >You could have sworn you heard something break.
  185.
  186. >"You have it all wrong, please, let me explain!!!"
  187. >The desperation in her voice heightens, as does Pinkie's pressure on her limbs.
  188. >"SHE WAS MY FRIEND!"
  189. >As raises her hoof for another devastating smash...
  190. >"She was my friend too..."
  191. >At that, you grab Pinkie's hoof before she can smash it down again.
  192. "That's enough. She didn't do it."
  193. >"Anon, how can...how..."
  194. >She's about to
  195. >You gently lead her off of Gilda, who curls up to ease the pain caused.
  196. >In Gilda's claw, you see it once more.
  197. >In it's clutches, a picture.
  198. >The same picture you had of her and Gilda.
  199. >It's RD and Gilda at flight camp.
  200. "What did I tell you before Pinks?"
  201. >You offer a hand to Gilda.
  202. >She looks at you with tear stained cheeks.
  203. >Not tears of pain, however.
  204. >Tears of sorrow.
  205. >She accepts the hand, and you pull her up.
  206. "No matter what the circumstance, you mourn the dead."
  207.
  208. >Gilda brushes herself off.
  209. >"Thanks."
  210. >She turns back to the walls of the clubhouse.
  211. >Rainbow Dash posters adorn the sides.
  212. >"Dash..."
  213. >Another soft sniffle comes out.
  214. "What're ya doing here, Gilda?"
  215. >She scoffs.
  216. >"You already said it, bub. Mourning."
  217. >She holds up the photo.
  218. >"Me and Dash go way back..."
  219. "I know, Gilda. What I NEED to know is how you figured out how Rainbow died."
  220. >It's only been a few hours.
  221. >No way it's hit the presses yet.
  222. >"I...heard it through the grapevine."
  223. >Bullshit.
  224. >"You ain't foolin' us, bird brain!"
  225. >Gilda bears her claws at Pinks.
  226. >Clearly not happy with what happened before.
  227. >She puts them away, not looking for another fight.
  228. >"Hmph. I told ya the truth, I happened to hear it."
  229. "Gilda, you don't 'happen to hear' plans about someone gettin' whacked."
  230.
  231. >"Fine, I heard it from a rat."
  232. "A rat? Rats don't often hang out with griffons."
  233. >Pinkie's joke goes far over Gilda's head.
  234. >"Not that kind of rat, candy-ass. The local snitch."
  235. >Every town's got one.
  236. >Well, almost.
  237. >'Gabby Gums' hasn't been around for a while.
  238. "So you came here?"
  239. >"I wanted to try and save her."
  240. >The sobering tone causes the mood to flatten.
  241. >She stares solemnly at her picture.
  242. >"When I saw the skies...I knew it was too late..."
  243. >A single tear lands on her photo, quickly wiped away by her feather.
  244. >"And that's all of it. Nothing more."
  245. "Fine. We're out, Pinks."
  246. >"WE'RE LEAVING?!? Anon, how can you even TRUST-"
  247. >You press a finger to her lips.
  248. "I know the sound of loss, Pinks. We're leaving."
  249. >You turn to leave, Pinks walking out first.
  250. >Turning back to Gilda, you leave her with a piece of your mind.
  251. "You know, you didn't have to be so rough on Flutters."
  252. >"The yellow mare? I didn't touch her. I'm not like that anymore..."
  253. >You go silent.
  254.
  255. >Pinks follows closely behind as you rush through the Ponyville streets.
  256. >"Anon! Slow! Down!"
  257. >She yells at you through breaths.
  258. >No time to slow down.
  259. "We gotta move, Pinks! Gilda didn't give Flutters that shiner!"
  260. >Upon hearing this, Pinks catches up to your speed, as if she was never out of breath.
  261. >The trees rush by as you eventually come upon the cottage.
  262. >Something wasn't right.
  263. >As you come closer, the door is slightly ajar.
  264. >She deadbolted it.
  265. >Without hesitation, you force the door open in it's entirety.
  266. "FLUTTERSHY!"
  267. >Your cry of worry was not in vain.
  268. >Three Griffons back 'Shy into a corner.
  269. >"ANON!!"
  270. >Fluttershy cries with a desperate plea of freedom.
  271. >The trio turns their heads towards you in confusion.
  272. >At this, Fluttershy takes her leave, slipping through a gap.
  273. >She takes off, flying out of the door behind you.
  274. >The griffons aren't far behind, as they take flight, knocking you to the floor as they bolt out the same exit.
  275.
  276. >"Anon!"
  277. >Pinks pulls you up.
  278. "C'mon, we gotta help her!"
  279. >You rush outside, and stare up at the sky.
  280. >The rain blurs your vision, but cracks of lightning illuminate the sky, silhouettes of the airborne few being shown briefly.
  281. >Loops, turns, ducks, dives.
  282. >It would be a majestic display of aerial acrobatics if it weren't for the impending murderous intent.
  283. >You can't fucking help from the ground.
  284. >"AAAAHHHHH!"
  285. >It's too late.
  286. >The three griffons caught their prey.
  287. >In the sky, you see a griffon holding Fluttershy by her wing.
  288. >She dangles freely, struggling to escape, but to no avail.
  289. "FLUTTERSHY!"
  290. >You call to the skies above, your voice booming above the lightning.
  291. >The griffon looks down, a malicious grin on his beak.
  292. >Bearing his razor sharp talons, he lets out a final statement.
  293. >"Consider this a WARNING."
  294. >The final crack of lighting hides the sickening slice.
  295.
  296. >In a flash, it happened.
  297. >The yellow form falling from the sky too fast for you to react.
  298. >The griffons dashing away, their prize in tow.
  299. >Pinks screaming, louder than any lighting could ever be.
  300. >Fluttershy falls to Earth in front of you...
  301. >...followed shortly by the trail of blood, left from her now empty right shoulder.
  302. >You rush to her side, falling to your knees.
  303. >The barely concious p0ny looks at you through her blackened eyes.
  304. >"A...Anon...I'm...Sorry..."
  305. >As she passes out, her heartbeat still goes on weakly.
  306. >She's still alive.
  307. >You wrap your trenchcoat around her, and pick her up.
  308. >"Pinks, hospital, now!"
  309. >The tearsoaked Pinkie follows behind you as you rush Flutters to safety.
  310. >Another pegasus is not dying tonight.
  311. >Not on the cold, unforgiving ground.
  312. >And not in your arms.
