  1. "What?!"
  2. "You heard me right, young lady." Lori snapped back at the 14-year-old Loan. "Give Rose your game thing."
  3. "B-but this was a gift from Dad for my 11th birthday...!" Loan squeaked, her naturally quiet demeanour working against her.
  4. "Mom, really, I don't-" Rose, 15, cowering slightly behind her mum's leg and giving Loan a sheepish glance, was cut off.
  5. "No, Loan, Rose has been a very good girl and she deserves a reward."
  6. "But you can't take away my DS, it's mine!"
  7. "Give. Your sister. The DS. Or I'm confiscating the PS6 for a year."
  8. "No!" Loan shrieked, clutching it tight to her body.
  9. With a frustrated growl Lori reached out and gripped it hard, trying, and succeeding, to pull it away. "You don't deserve it! Bobby would never have wanted to let you have it!"
  10. This comment stunned Loan, long enough that Lori was able to take the handheld and almost shove it into an equally shocked Rose's arms.
  11. Lori let out a puff of air from her efforts. "See? Was that so hard?" She ruffled Rose's recently-shortened hair and walked out. "Have fun, Rosie~!"
  12. The door closed.
  13. A solid ten seconds passed. Loan curled up on herself and quietly sobbed to her self. Inside, she wanted to bawl and scream and take back her handheld, but if she did any of those she knew her mum would flip out on her, and the last thing she wanted to do was upset her mum.
  14. Rose, however, was still stunned. She shook her head to reorient herself, and looked at the handheld. The case was a metallic blue, Loan's favourite colour. A little message, short and sweet and a little misspelled, from their father was engraved on the underside.
  15. With a sigh, Rose tossed the handheld onto the bed, bumping Loan gently. "Here."
  16. "H-huh...?" Loan looked up, and saw the handheld. She picked it up and looked it over herself. "W-why-?"
  17. -
  18. "I don't really like playing those dumb games like you do." Rose crossed her arms. At this time Rose was a sassy brat and still her mum's favourite. Her teen-angsty expression softened, however. "And, y'know... Dad got that for you, not for me."
  19. That was another thing about Rose. She may have been Lori's favourite, but when anything to do with their dad came up she was always on his side, favouritism be damned.
  20. "A-are you sure?" Loan stuttered. "Mom's gonna be mad at me if she sees me with this-"
  21. "Then screw her!" Rose yelled with uncharacteristic hatred. "If she's got a problem then she can deal with me!"
  22. Loan blinked. She... never expected *this* level of vitriol from Rose, especially regarding Lori.
  23. Rose practically threw herself onto the bed, back first. She sighed. "Look, Lo, I..." she let out another deep breath, as if she had to psych herself up for it. "I know I... haven't exactly been nice to you lately. Mom keeps picking on you and rather than fight her on it I decided to just follow her with it. Maybe part of me thinks you deserve it." She screwed her eyes shut, her fists clenching hard. "But the way she just... used Dad's name like that, to take something he gave you, I just-" she growled in anger. "It isn't right!"
  24. Loan looked over the handheld again. "But... what if Mom's right? What if I don't deserve-"
  25. "No!" Rose shouted, her voice breaking. "Dad loved the both of us equally, and that DS is yours. You deserve it because he gave it to you!"
  26. Loan could tell, even through her blurry vision, that Rose was crying.
  27. "Just... keep the stupid DS, I don't want it."
  28. "I..." Loan closed her eyes, and then back at Rose, who was looking away and trying not to seem like she was crying. "Thank you, Rose."
  29. "Y-your welcome." She murmured under her breath. "Hey, uh... can we make a promise?"
  30. Loan felt a familiar spike of anxiety but reminded herself she was okay, to minimal effect. "Uh... s-sure, what is it?"
  31. -
  32. "We're not gonna turn into Mom when we're older." She replied. "Or, like, be more like Dad. Whichever's easier for you."
  33. Loan spent a moment thinking. Would it even be possible? Her anxiety said no, but she told herself that if she tried to do this with Rose at her side, she could probably manage it. "I think... I can do that, with your help."
  34. Rose smiled, her eyes still wet. "I'll be with you every step."
