　五人が居間に残っている。
　俺と、シルフィと、ノルンと、アイシャと、ロキシー。
　あと、アルマジロのジローが幸せそうな顔で暖炉前に寝そべっているが、これは数に数えなくていいだろう。

　リーリャはゼニスを風呂にいれている。
　入れる前に「大丈夫ですか？」と聞いてきたので、頷いておいた。
　これからの話し合いは、リーリャの助けを得ずに終わらせたい。

　ノルンは自室に戻ることなく、ここにいる。
　しかし、やはり、辛かったのだろう、まだすんすんと鼻を鳴らしていた。
　彼女はパウロになついていたから、その辛さは人一倍大きいはずだ。

Five people remained in the room. They were Sylphy, Norn, Aisha, Roxy and I. Also, Jirou the armadillo was happily sleeping in front of the fireplace, but it should be fine if I don't count him.

Lilia and Zenith are in the bath. Before they went in, Lilia asked me "Will you be okay?", to which I nodded. I want to end this discussion without Lilia's help.

Norn hadn't returned to her room, and was here with us. But as expected, it was tough on her as she was still sniffling. Since she was attached to Paul, it should be tougher on her than other people.

「さて、最後に話がある」

　そう言うと、三人は椅子に座り直した。

　俺はロキシーに目配せをする。
　ロキシーは黙って俺の隣までやってきた。

"Now then, there's one last topic."

When I say this, the three of them straighten up in their chairs.

I exchange looks with Roxy. Without saying anything, Roxy moved to my side.

「……」

　シルフィの膨らんだお腹が、これから言う事をためらわせる。
　しかし、俺には責任がある。
　ロキシーも、いずれこうなるのだ。
　仮にシルフィがノーと言ったら、彼女は一人で子供を産むことになるのだろうか。
　一応、そういう約束だからな。
　もちろん、俺としては資金援助でもなんでもするつもりだが。

"..."

Seeing Sylphy's swollen belly, I hesitate about the next topic. However, I have a responsibility. One day, Roxy will become like this too. If for instance Sylphy says no, then Roxy might have to deliver a child by herself. That's what we've agreed on for now. Of course I plan on giving her money and support though.

「俺は、ここにいるロキシーを、二番目の妻として迎えようと思っている」
「……えっ？」

　戸惑いの声を上げたのは、シルフィではなくノルンだった。
　彼女は立ち上がると、俺とロキシーを交互に見る。
　シルフィはというと、きょとんとしていた。

"I was thinking of accepting Roxy here, as my second wife."

"...Eh?"

The one who raised a bewildered voice wasn't Sylphy, but Norn. Standing up, her gaze alternated between Roxy and I. As for Sylphy, she was staring blankly.

「ど、どういう事！？」
「順を追って説明する」

　俺は、ベガリット大陸で何があったのかを説明した。
　パウロが死んで、どん底まで落ち込んでしまった事。
　それをロキシーに助けてもらった事。
どうやら自分はロキシーが好きだという事。
　尊敬している彼女にうちの一員になってもらいたいという事。

"W-, what is this!?"

"I plan on explaining from start to finish."

I explained what happened on the Begaritt continent. About how Paul died and how depressed I was. About how, seeing this, Roxy saved me. About how it seemed that I was in love with Roxy. About how I respected her, and wanted her to become a member of our family.

「シルフィを裏切るつもりはなかったけど、結果的に約束を破ってしまった。すまない」

　俺は膝をついた。
　床にはじゅうたんが敷いてあるが、北方大地の冬は寒く、床は冷たかった。
　頭を深々と床に擦りつけた。

"Though I had no intention of betraying Sylphy, in the end I broke my promise. I'm sorry."

I kneeled down. Though there was a carpet spread across the floor, northern winters are cold, so the floor was cold. I pressed my head deeply against the floor.

「えっ、ちょ、ルディ！？」

　シルフィの慌てる声が聞こえた。


"Eh-, wai-, Rudy!?"

I could hear Sylphy's flustered voice.

「シルフィのことは変わらず愛している。けど、ロキシーを妊娠させてしまったかもしれないんだ。責任を取らなきゃいけない」
「あ、うん」

　言葉を重ねれば重ねるほど、俺の言葉が安っぽいものであるように聞こえてしまう。
　しかし、本心だ。

　シルフィを見ると、彼女は困った顔をしていた。
　混乱しているのかもしれない。
　無理もない。
　俺は愛している、必ず戻ってくると言った。
　そんな相手が、ボロボロになって帰ってきた。
　家族と左手を失って。
　でも命は無事だったから、そのことを喜ぼうと思ったのに、別の女を妻に迎えると言い出したのだから。
　俺だったら、喚いて、喚いて、糾弾する。

　けど、俺は言う。
　無理を通す一言を。

"I still love you, Sylphy. But, I might have gotten Roxy pregnant. I have to take responsibility."

"Ah, okay."

The more words I speak, the cheaper they sound to me. However, they're my true thoughts.

When I look at Sylphy, I find that she has a troubled face. Her mind might be in chaos. It's understandable. A person said that they loved you, and would come back without fail. When they did come back, they were in tatters. They'd lost their family and their left arm. But because at least their life was intact, you were thinking that it was something to be happy about, when suddenly they said something about making some other woman their wife.

Were it me, I'd shout, and shout, and condemn them.

But, I'll speak. Even if it's unreasonable, I'll speak words to force my way through.

「シルフィ。許してほしい」
「許せるわけないでしょ！」

　ノルンだった。
　叫んだのは、シルフィではなくノルンだった。
　彼女は俺のところまでツカツカとやってきて、胸倉を掴んだ。

"Sylphy. Please forgive me, and allow it."

"There's no way you could be forgiven, right!?"

It was Norn. The one who shouted wasn't Sylphy, but Norn. She powered over to me and grabbed my collar.

「シルフィ姉さんが、どんな気持ちで兄さんを待っていたか、知ってて言ってるんですか！」
「……」
「毎日、ルディは大丈夫かな。ルディに会いたいね、ルディも今頃ご飯食べてるかなって。寂しそうな顔をしてたシルフィ姉さんの顔と声を、知ってていってるんですか！」

　知らない。
　知らないけど、想像はできる。
　俺を待つシルフィの顔。
　寂しそうなシルフィの声。
　椅子に座って足をブラブラさせながら、暇そうにしてるシルフィの姿。

"Are you going to say you know what kind of feelings Sylphy-nee had when she was waiting for you, Nii-san!?"

"..."

"Everyday, 'I wonder if Rudy is okay', 'I want to see Rudy', 'I wonder if Rudy's eaten dinner yet' she'd say. Do you know how lonely Sylphy-nee's voice and expressions were!?"

I don't. Though I don't, I can imagine it. Sylphy's face as she waited for me. Sylphy's lonely voice. Sylphy's form as she idled on a chair, swinging her legs about.

「お父さんも助けられなかったのはしょうがないって思いました！
　左手も失って、それぐらい厳しかったんだから、しょうがないって！
　だから、兄さんを責めるのはお門違いだと思いましたけど、でも、女の人を抱いて自分のものにする余裕はあったって事ですか！？」
「違う！　そんな余裕は無かった。ロキシーは余裕のない俺を、自分の気持ちを捨てて助けてくれたんだ！」
「シルフィ姉さんだって、その場にいれば兄さんを助けたに決まってます！」

　そうだろうとも。
　シルフィは俺を助けてくれた。
　俺の不能を治したのはシルフィだ。

　しかし、ロキシーも助けてくれたのだ。
　俺が好きで、俺が好きな相手がいるとわかった上で。
　自分が使い捨てにされると覚悟して。

"I thought that it couldn't be helped if Otou-san couldn't be saved! Since it was that difficult a fight and you'd even lost your arm, I thought it couldn't be helped! That's why I thought it'd be barking up the wrong tree if I blamed you, Nii-san, but you actually had the leisure to sleep with another woman and make her yours!?"

"That's not it! I didn't have that sort of leisure! It's because things were like that, that Roxy ignored her own feelings and helped me!"

"Were Sylphy-nee there, she'd definitely have helped you!"

That's probably absolutely true. Sylphy has helped me. The one who cured my impotence was Sylphy.

However, Roxy has also helped me. She liked me, and despite her knowing that I had someone I loved, she was prepared to throw away her own feelings to help me.

「ノルン、お前だってわかるだろ。
　部屋に閉じこもって、にっちもさっちもいかなくて、
　自分じゃどうしようもないと思った時の気持ちはさ。
　そこで助けてくれた相手を、どうして蔑ろにできるんだ」
「わかるけど！
　兄さんには感謝してますけど！
　それとこれとは関係ありません！
　二人も妻を娶るなんて、ミリス様はお許しになりません！」

　ああ。
　そうか。ノルンはミリス教徒だったか。
　いや、宗教は関係ないな。
　俺は間違ったことをやろうとしているのだろう。
　無理を通して、道理を引っ込めようとしている。

"Norn, even you should understand, right? The feelings you have when you lock yourself in your room, when you have no way out, when you feel that you can't do anything. How could you ignore the person who saved you from that?"

"I understand! I'm thankful to you, Nii-san! But, this and that are different matters! If you take two wives, Milis-sama won't forgive you!"

Aah. I see. Norn was an adherent of Milis, huh? No, it probably doesn't have to do with her faith, huh. I've done something wrong. I tried to ignore reason, and force my way through.

「大体、なんでこんな小さい子なんですか！
　私とそんな変わらないぐらいじゃないですか！」

　ノルンはロキシーをにらみつけた。
　ロキシーはいつもどおりの無表情で、ノルンを見る。
　若干ロキシーの方が背は高いが、１０センチも差は無いだろう。
　ロキシーはその視線を受けて、無表情のまま、ぽつりと言った。

"In the first place, why a small kid like this!? Isn't she about the same age as me!?"

Norn glared at Roxy. Expressionless as usual, Roxy looks at Norn. Roxy is a little taller, but the difference in height probably isn't even 10 centimetres. Receiving Norn's gaze without expression, Roxy simply said,

"...I might be small, but I'm still an adult."

I don't know what to say. You could almost see into Roxy's heart by listening to that trembling voice.

But depending on how you take it, those words could probably be taken as impudence. Norn was enraged.

「……小さいかもしれませんが、これでも成人です」

　何をどう言えばいいのかわからない。
　ロキシーのそんな心のうちが覗けるような震えた声だった。

　しかしその言葉は、聞きようによっては減らず口にも聞こえただろう。
　ノルンは激昂した。

「成人なら、ずうずうしいとか思わないんですかっ！」
「……」
「ずかずかと入り込んできて、悪いと思わないんですか！」
「ノルン、言い過ぎだ。ロキシーを妻に迎えるって言い出したのは俺だ。ロキシーは悪くない。彼女は身を引こうとしてくれたんだ」

　そんなノルンに、俺は強い口調で反論する。
　しかし、ノルンは俺の方へは向かず、ロキシーを責め立てた。

"If you're an adult, then shouldn't you know some shame!?"

"..."

"Don't you think anything of butting into our family like this!?"

"Norn, you've said too much. The one who proposed making her my second wife was me. Roxy hasn't done anything wrong. Roxy had wanted to back away."

I refuted Norn in a strong stone. However, Norn continued to condemn Roxy without looking at me.

「兄さんは黙っていてください！　大体、身を引こうとしたんなら、なんで最後までそうしようとしないんですか！　結局、兄さんの言葉に甘えただけでしょう！」

　俺はノルンを叩こうかと思った。
　しかし、そんな資格が俺に無いことは、言うまでもない。
　ここでノルンを叩けば、俺は本当の意味でダメになる気がした。

"Please be quiet, Nii-san! In the first place, if she was going to back away, why didn't she stick to it? In the end she just took advantage of your words, Nii-san!"

At Norn's shout, Roxy stayed quiet for a while. With her usual expressionless face, she's hanging her head and looking at the floor. In the end, she finally raises her head and bows to Norn.

「そうですね。ずうずうしいです。申し訳ありませんでした」

　ロキシーはそう言って立ち上がると、ノロノロと動いた。
　部屋の隅に置いた荷物を手に取り、帽子をかぶり、足早にその場を去ろうとする。
　俺はそれを止める事が出来ない。
　反対される事はわかっていた。
　簡単に受け入れてもらえるなんて甘く考えてはいないつもりだった。
　それでも説得すればなんとかなる、と俺は思っていた。

　だが、甘かった。
　今の状況。
　ロキシーに容赦なく浴びせられる言葉。
　彼女は針のむしろのように感じるだろう。

　これからの生活でそれが続くかもしれない。
　そう思えば、ここにはいたいとは思うまい。
　俺だって、いたたまれなくなって出て行こうとする。
　とめられない。
　引き止められない。
　ロキシーに嫌な思いをさせたまま、ここを立ち去らせるわけにはいかない。
　それを俺は望んでいない。
　彼女は報われなければいけない。
　こんな思いをさせるために、ここに連れてきたわけじゃない。
　彼女を幸せにするためにここにきたのだ。
　それとも、もしかして違うのか。
　俺は彼女を幸せにはできないのか？

　いや、考えろ。
　どうすればいい。
　どうすればノルンを説得できる。

　思いつかない。
　ロキシーが出て行ってしまう。
　せめて引き止めないと。
　そうだ、たとえノルンを殴って、彼女に嫌われたとしても。

"You're right. I'm being shameless. I'm sorry."

Saying this, Roxy got up and slowly moved. Picking up the luggage she left in the corner of the room and putting on her hat, she quickly leaves. I can't stop her. I understand why they're opposed. I didn't think they would humour me and easily accept it. But even so, I thought that I'd be able to persuage them somehow.

But I was naive. I consider the current situation. Roxy was relentlessly attacked with words. She probably feels like she's on a bed of nails.

Her life might continue to be this way from now on. Thinking about it, she didn't want to stay here.

Were it me, I'd run away from somewhere like this.

「待って！」

　その声は、後ろから聞こえた。

"Wait!"

I hear a voice behind me.

「ロキシーさん、待ってください！」

　シルフィだった。
　彼女は立ち上がり、小走りでロキシーの所に行くと、その手を掴んだ。
　振り向いたロキシーの目には、大粒の涙が溜まっていた。

"Roxy-san, please wait!"

It was Sylphy. She had stood up, trotted over to Roxy and grabbed her hand. Roxy turned around, and large tears were gathered in her eyes.

「なんで引き止めるんですか、シルフィ姉！
　行かせればいいじゃないですか！」
「ノルンちゃん、ちょっと黙っててくれないかな？」
「えっ？」
「キミ。さっきから言葉が過ぎるよ。ボクは最初から、一言も嫌だなんて言ってないんだからね」

　シルフィがそう言うと、ノルンは絶句して動きを止めた。

"Why are you stopping her, Sylphy-nee! Isn't it fine just to let her go!?"

"Norn-chan. Could you be quiet for a little bit?"

"Eh?"

"Just now you said too much, you know. From the beginning, I never said a word about refusing, after all."

At Sylphy's words, Norn became speechless and froze.

「座ってください」

　動かなくなったノルンを尻目に、シルフィは、ロキシーをソファへと座らせた。
　ロキシーは抵抗せず、言われるがままソファへと腰を下ろす。
シルフィもまた、そのすぐ横に座る。

"Please sit down."

Paying a backward glance to the frozen Norn, Sylphy sat Roxy down on the sofa. Roxy didn't resist and did as she was told. Sylphy too, took a seat next to Roxy.

「ちょっと混乱してたけど……ロキシーさんは、ルディを助けてくれたんだよね」

　そう聞かれ、ロキシーは恐る恐るといった感じで頷いた。

"Though things have gotten a little chaotic... You saved Rudy, right, Roxy-san?"

Asked that, Roxy meekly nodded.

「……はい。でも、下心もありましたので、言い訳に使うつもりはありません」
「うん。ルディ、かっこいいもんね。下心なしでって言われても、逆に信じられないよ」
「……」
「ボクがロキシーさんの立場でも、やっぱり同じことをしちゃうと思う」

　シルフィは優しい顔で、ロキシーに笑いかけた。
　ロキシーはこわばった顔をしている。
　シルフィは笑いながら、話を続けた。

"...Yes. But I had ulterior motives, so I don't plan on using it as an excuse."

"Mn. Rudy is cool, isn't it? On the contrary, had you said that you didn't have ulterior motives, I wouldn't have believed you."

"..."

"Were in your shoes, Roxy-san, I think I really would've done the same thing."

Sylphy made a gentle expression and was smiling at Roxy. Roxy's face was stiff. Whilst smiling, Sylphy continued.

「……正直ね。ボクは時間の問題だと思ってたんだ」
「えっと、何がでしょうか」
「ルディが別の女の人を連れてくるの」

　時間の問題で、俺が別の女を連れてくる。
　……ん？
　……あれ？
　もしかして俺、信用されてなかった？

"...You know, honestly speaking, I thought that it was just a matter of time."

"Umm, sorry, what was?"

"Rudy bringing back another woman."

Me bringing back another woman was just a matter of time.

...Mn?

...Huh?

Could it be that I wasn't reliable?

「ほら、ルディってエッチでしょ？　だから、ボクとできないと、きっと誰かとしちゃうなって思ったんだ。ボクの時もそうだったけど、ルディは誠実だから、しちゃったら妻に迎えるって言うだろうしね。いつまでもボク一人でルディを独占できるとは、思って無かったよ」

　言いたいことはある。
　だが、実際そうなった。
　俺に何かを言う資格は無い。

"I mean, look, Rudy is perverted, right? That's why I thought that once he couldn't do it with me, he'd definitely do it with someone else. It was like that for me too; since Rudy is sincere, after doing it he'd probably try to take them in as his wife. I didn't think I'd be able to monopolise Rudy forever, you know."

I want to speak up. But, it really was as she said. I'm not qualified to say anything.

「正直、連れてくるとしたらリニアか、プルセナか、ナナホシさんあたりかなって思ってたんだけどね」
「ナナホシさん以外は、聞いたことのない名前です」
「ルディの学校の友達だよ。みんな胸とか大きくて、セクシーなんだ」

　ナナホシは別にセクシーではないが。
　いや、今はそんな事はどうでもいいな。

"Though, honestly speaking, I thought that when he did bring someone back, it'd be someone like Rinia, or Pursena or maybe Nanahoshi-san."

"Besides the name Nanahoshi-san, I haven't heard the other names."

"They're Rudy's friends from school. All of them are sexy with big chests."

Nanahoshi isn't particularly sexy though. No, that kind of thing isn't important right now.

「正直、旅の内容は過酷だったし、パウロさんが死んだこともあって、そういう事すっぽり忘れてたから、ちょっと面食らったけど……でも、納得したんだ」
「なにがですか？」
「ロキシーさんこの家に来てから、ずっと不安そうな顔でルディのこと見てたから、なんでだろうって、思ってたんだ。最初は、パウロさんが死んだことを伝えるのを不安に思っているのかもって思ったんだけど。あれは、この事だったんだって」
「……」
「ロキシーさんの目は、恋する乙女の目だったんだって」

　恋する乙女。
　そう言われて、ロキシーの顔が真っ赤に染まった。

"Honestly, because the story of your journey was so harsh, and Paul-san died as well so I was a little bewildered, but... I understood."

"About what?"

"Because you had always been looking at Rudy anxiously since coming to our house, I was wondering what was wrong. At first I thought it was was because you were nervous about telling us about Paul-san's death, but... It was actually 'that' after all."

「すいません、不快なものを見せてしまって……」

　ロキシーは赤い顔のまま、頭を下げた。
　妻から見て、夫に恋慕の目線を向ける女の存在は、目障りだろう。
　そんな風に考えたのがありありとわかった。
　しかし、シルフィは首を振った。

"Excuse me. I've shown you something unpleasant..."

Her face still red, Roxy bowed her head. From the perspective of a wife, a woman looking at her husband lovingly would probably be an eyesore. That line of thinking is something you can vividly understand. However, Sylphy shook her head.

「不快じゃ、なかったよ」
「……しかし」
「なんていえばいいかな……」

　シルフィは少し考えるように首をかしげ、すぐにうんと頷いた。

"It wasn't unpleasant, you know."

"...However."

"I wonder how I should say it..."

Sylphy tilted her head in thought for a little, and then quickly went 'mn' and nodded.

「あのね、ロキシーさんのことはルディからいつも聞いてたんだ」
「なんと？」
「俺の尊敬する魔術師はあの人だけだって。転移事件が起こる前も、ボクと結婚したあとも、同じように言ってたんだ」
「……それはなんというか、恐縮です」
「だから、ちょっと嫉妬してるところもあったんだ。ルディってロキシーさんの話をする時って、すっごく憧れた目をしてるから」
「……」
「ロキシー・ミグルディアって人物は、ボクなんかが到底並び立てないぐらいの、すごい魔術師なんだって、勝手に思ってたんだ」
「……」
「でも、実際に見て、ルディが好きなだけの普通の女の子なんだって思ったら、嫉妬なんて消えちゃったんだ。だって、ボクと一緒だもん」

　シルフィはそういうと、ロキシーの帽子を取って、その頭を撫でた。
　ロキシーはシルフィを見たまま、されるがまま、頭を撫でられていく。
　そして、シルフィは、言った。

"You know, I've heard about you from Rudy before, Roxy-san."

"What about?"

"Just that 'Roxy' was a magician that he respected. Before the teleport incident, and then after we got married as well, he said the same thing."

"...That's um, I'm humbled."

"That's why I was a little jealous as well. Whenever Rudy spoke about you, he looked like he reaally longed for you."

"..."

"I one-sidedly thought of 'Roxy Migurdia' as an amazing enough magician that someone like me would never be able to compare with her."

"..."

"But when I actually saw you, when I thought of you as just a normal girl who was in love with Rudeus, so my jealousy vanished."

Saying that, Sylphy took off Roxy's hat and stroked her head. Looking up at Sylphy, Roxy didn't resist, and let herself be pat. Sylphy then spoke.

「ノルンちゃんはああ言ったけど、ボクは歓迎します」

　ロキシーの顔が驚愕に彩られた。
　俺の顎も驚愕で開かれている。
　まさか、シルフィがこんなにあっさりと許すとは、思いもよらなかったのだ。

"Though Norn-chan said that, I'll welcome you."

Roxy's face dyed in shocked. My jaw dropped in shock as well. Not even in my dreams did I think Sylphy would so easily accept it.

「シルフィエット……さん」
「シルフィでいいよ。仲良くしよう。えっと、ロキシー……ちゃん？」
「その、一応今年で５０歳になるので、ちゃん付けは……」
「あ、そうなんだ。ボクより年上……ごめん。そういえばそうだったね。ルディに聞いてたんだけど、実際に見るとね」
「わたし、小さいですからね」
「ボクだって大きくはないよ」

　ロキシーとシルフィは顔を見合わせると、二人で笑った。

"Sylphiette...-san."

"Just 'Sylphy' is fine. Let's get along. Umm, Roxy-...chan?"

"Um, I technically turn 50 this year, so adding -chan is..."

"Ah, so that's how it is. You're my elder... Sorry. Come to think of it, that's right. I'd heard about this from Rudy, but actually seeing it, you know...?"

"I'm small after all."

"I'm not big either, you know?"

Roxy and Sylphy's gaze met, and the two of them laughed.

「一緒に、ルディを支えていこう。ロキシー」
「ありがとうございます。シルフィ」

　二人はそう言って、握手をした。
　奇妙な連帯感が感じられる握手だった。

　それを見て、俺はほっと息を吐いた。
　大丈夫そうだ。
　そう思っての無意識の行動だった。
　しかし、そんな俺の動作を見て、ノルンが眉をひそめていた。

"Let's support Rudy together, Roxy"

"Thank you very much, Sylphy."

Saying this, the two shook hands. It was a handshake filled with an odd sense of solidarity.
