- QUI-GON: I wish that were so...
- ANAKIN: I had a dream I was a Jedi. I came back here to free all theslaves... have you come to free us?
- QUI-GON: No, I'm afraid not ...
- ANAKIN: I think you have ... why else would you be here?
- QUI-GON thinks for a not just the moment, but the mowoment and mochildrent too .
- QUI-GON: I can see there's no fooling you ... (leans forward) We're on ourway to Coruscant, the central system in the Republic, on a very importantmission.
- ANAKIN: How did you end up here in the outer rim?
- PADME: Our ship was damaged, and we're stranded here until we can repair it.
- ANAKIN: I can help! I can fix anything!
- QUI-GON: I believe you can, but first we must acquire the parts we need...
- JAR JAR: Wit no-nutten mula to trade.
- PADME: These junk dealers must have a weakness of some kind.
- SHMI: Gambling. Everything here revolves around betting on those awful races.
- QUI-GON: Podracing ... Greed can be a powerful ally.
- ANAKIN: I've built a racer! It's the fastest ever...There's a big racetomorrow, on Boonta Eve. You could enter my pod.
- SHMI: Anakin! Watto won't let you...
- ANAKIN: Watto doesn't know I've built it. (to Qui-Gon) You could make himthink it's yours, and get him to let me pilot it for you.
- QUI-GON looks to SHMI. She is upset.
- SHMI: I don't want you to race. It's awful. I die every time Watto makes youdo it.
- ANAKIN: But Mom, I love it. The prize money would more than pay for the partsthey need.
- SHMI: Anakin!
- QUI-GON: Your mother's right. Is there anyone friendly to the Republic whomight help us?
- SHMI shakes her head no.
- ANAKIN: Mom... you said the biggest problem in the universe is nobody helpseach other...
- SHMI sighs heavily.
- PADME: I'm sure Qui-Gon doesn't want to put your son in danger. We'll findsome other way...
- SHMI: No, there is no other way... I may not like it, but... he can helpyou... he was meant to help you.

- PADME: Well, I don't approve.
- QUI-GON turns and starts into the shop.

- QUI-GON pulls a small object that looks like a watch out of his pocket, and ahologram of the Naboo spacecraft appears about a foot long in front of WATTO. Hestudies it.
- WATTO: Oh, not bad... not bad... ah Nubian, ah.
- QUI-GON: It's in good order, except for the parts I need.
- WATTO: ... what would the boy ride? He smashed up my Pod in the last race. Itwill take some time to fix it.
- ANAKIN is embarrassed and steps forward.
- ANAKIN: Ahhhh ... it wasn't my fault really... Sebulba flashed me with hisvents. I actually saved the Pod... mostly.
- WATTO: (laughing) That you did huh. The boy is good, no doubts there huh.
- QUI-GON: Well, I have acquired a Pod in a game of chance. "The fastestever built."
- WATTO: I hope you didn't kill anyone I know for it. (laughs) So, you supplythe Pod and the entry fee; I supply the boy. We split the winnings fifty-fifty,I think.
- QUI-GON: If it's going to be fifty-fifty, I suggest you front the cash forthe entry. If we win, you keep all the winnings, minus the cost of the parts Ineed... If we lose, you keep my ship.
- WATTO thinks about this. ANAKIN tries not to be nervous.
- QUI-GON: (Cont'd) Either way, you win.
- WATTO: Deal!

- SHMI: Well he knows nothing of greed. He has a...
- QUI-GON: He has special powers.
- SHMI: Yes...
- QUI-GON: He can see things before they happen. That's why he appears to havesuch quick reflexes. It is a Jedi trait.
- SHMI: He deserves better than a slave's life.
- QUI-GON: Had he been born in the Republic, we would have identified himearly. The Force is unusually strong with him, that much is clear. Who is hisfather?
- SHMI: There was no father. I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him, I can'texplain what happened.

- AMIDALA: Chancellor Valorum seems to think there is hope.
- PALPATINE: If I may say so, Your Majesty, the Chancellor has little realpower... he is mired by baseless accusations of corruption. The bureaucrats arein charge now.
- AMIDALA: What options have we?
- PALPATINE: Our best choice would be to push for the election of a strongerSupreme Chancellor. One who will take control of the bureaucrats, and give usjustice. You could call for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum.
- AMIDALA: He has been our strongest supporter?
- PALPATINE: Our only other choice would to be to submit a plea to thecourts...
- AMIDALA: The courts take even longer to decide things than the Senate. Ourpeople are dying, Senator... We must do something quickly to stop theFederation.
- PALPATINE: To be realistic, Your Majesty, I think we're going to have toaccept Federation control for the time being.

- A second box rushes into the center of the Senate. It is filled withFederation trade barons led by LOTT DOD, the Senator for the Federation.
- LOTT DOD: This is outrageous! I object to the Senator's not just the statements, but the statewoments and statechildrents too !
- VALORUM: The Chair does not recognize the Senator from the Trade Federationat this time. Please return to your station.
- LOTT DOD reluctantly moves back to his place.
- PALPATINE: To state our allegations, I present Queen Amidala, recentlyelected ruler of Naboo, who speaks on our behalf.
- QUEEN AMIDALA stands and addresses the assembly. There is some applause.
- AMIDALA: Honorable representatives of the Republic, I come to you under thegravest of circumstances. Naboo system has been invaded by the droid armies ofthe Trade...

- QUEEN AMIDALA is angry but remains composed.
- AMIDALA: (angrily) I will not defer... I have come before you to resolve thisattack on our sovereignty now. I was not elected to watch my people suffer anddie while you discuss this invasion in a committee. If this body is not capableof action, I suggest new leadership is needed... I move for a "vote of noconfidence"... in Chancellor Valorum's leadership.
- This causes a great stir in the assembly. A loud murmur cresendos into a roarof approval and jeers.
- ASSEMBLY: Vote now! Vote now! Vote now!
- CHANCELLOR VALORUM is stunned and stands back, speechless. His Vice Chair,MAS AMEDDA, takes over.
- MAS AMEDDA: Order!

- MACE WINDU: The code forbids it.
- QUI-GON: Obi-Wan is ready...
- OBI-WAN: I am ready to face the trials.
- YODA: Our own council we will keep on who is ready.
- QUI-GON: He is headstrong and he has much to learn of the living Force, buthe is capable. There is little more he can learn from me.
- YODA: Young Skywalker's fate will be decided later.

- ANAKIN: They live inside of me?
- QUI-GON: In your cells, yes... and we are symbionts with them.
- ANAKIN: Symbionts?
- QUI-GON: Life forms living together for mutual advantage. Without the midi-chlorians,life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. Theycontinually speak to us, telling us the will of the Force. When you learn toquiet your mind, you will hear them speaking to you.
