  1. There comes a time in every man's life where the surroundings wash away. During that moment, time may even slow down dramatically so to the point where the individual feels as if they're trudging through a sea of molasses. In this moment, the brain ceases to stop working. Vibrant colors fade out to a dull grey. All outside noise steadily drops until they’re naught but muffled sounds. Takeshi descends onto his knees slowly. His right hand reaches forward to the figure on the floor before him. Blood pooled around the body, staining the wood tiles under it crimson. How could such a thing happen? Why would it happen?
  2.
  3. His mouth opens.
  4.
  5. “I…kari?”
  6.
  7. Any passing individual could immediately tell that the body was no longer living, it was a corpse. How long it had been there mattered not. What mattered was that she was no longer living. Takeshi’s right arm collapses at his side. Yes, he should know that his cherished best friend was deceased. It’s as clear as day, and yet… “This…this isn’t funny, you know? Come on. We have games to play. Ikari. Wake up.” A gentle, futile nudge is given. No response. Silence ensues. “Wake…wake up.” Droplets of water splash onto the crimson liquid. One, by one, until a steady stream flows freely from their destination---his eyes. Tears for a friend that he’s known since he was six. Who has always been there for him. Even during his darkest of days, Ikari never left his side. When Takeshi’s mother passed away, she was there. When he was being bullied for his hand-me-down clothes and poorly done haircut, she was there to comfort him. And now that she was gone…
  8.
  9. What now?
  10.
  11. Takeshi’s mouth opens to speak again, however just like in the beginning; no sound comes out. Here Ikari was before him, a woman who he considered like a sister, slain in cold blood. For what purpose? To cause him pain. Surely that was it. It was all his fault. Everything else was, so why not this as well? He sat there, staring at her corpse. There was no screaming. No yelling. Nothing. Just tears and an unbelievable emptiness that invaded every part of his body, seeped into his very core and threatened to warp his soul into an unchangeable existence. One that would now shun the world completely; cursing those who would dare declare that they were anything more than miserable. Happy. It didn’t matter.
  12.
  13. Black ichor seeped out of his pores into the atmosphere in a vicious stream. They merged together behind him to form a shadow that threatened to engulf Takeshi entirely with it’s arms. It’s close. So close… Another victim taken by th---
  14.
  15. “Stop.”
  16.
  17. A miniscule ball of light so seemingly insignificant lands on top of Takeshi’s head. He blinks, and his vision regains the clarity that it’s been missing since he first laid eyes on Ikari’s body. His environment, the house, is far too dark especially when it was around noon outside. The moment he turns his head, he comes face to face with a dark creature with no stable form, but arms outstretched in his direction. It roars in defiance, and yet a familiar voice echoes as clear as day.
  18.
  19. “He’s protected, as long as I’m around. Don’t even try it, punk. Hmph.”
  20.
  21. A memory emerges into Takeshi’s mind after this voice speaks. He recalls a group of bullies running off, and a girl by his side in his teenage years. “That’s what you punks get!” she shouted towards them, waving her fist in the air. He was sure he was hallucinating. How could he not be? She was dead. Her body was right there. But… Was it that even in death, she was still by his side? Or was he that far gone?
  22.
  23. “Take-kun, I’ll always be here for you. Stupid. You can’t chase me off that easily!”
  24.
  25. Again, the voice speaks. “I…kari? How?”
  26.
  27. “No time, Take-kun! RUN!”
  28.
  29. The beast roared again, and behind it, a green portal laced in a thick black substance manifested. A deafening boom reverberated, causing the very foundation of the house to quake. Something was…coming. And it was not good.
