 + IMPATIENT, INDECISIVE | the first word that comes to the mind of most people when they want to describe shin ara is impatient. waiting around is definitely not her strong point, and she can‘ stands being kept waiting. ara herself is the type of person to always be on time, ndash never in her life has she been late for anything (even her own birth, as she was born several weeks early). she is always on time, but she really wishes the other people around her had the same mindset. she can be a bit of a control freak when it comes to things happening at certain times, and she doesn't like it when things don't go exactly as she's planned them, even from the smallest details of when they're supposed to arrive. ara is also one of the most indecisive people on the planet. making decisions is most definitely not ara's strong point. it's probably best that you don't leave any decisions up to her, whether they be small or big. ara doesn't do well when put under pressure, and her lack of ability to make decisions is one of the downsides of her personality. she's just not good at making decisions, whether it be what classes to enrol in, what she wants to eat, or which colour she thinks is her favourite.

 + BLUNT, SARCASTIC | ara is also known for being a very blunt person. the entire town already has a reputation made up for her that ara doesn't even bother trying to sugar coat her words. she tells things like they are, and sometimes even tends to put a pessimistic spin on things. she's definitely not someone with her glass half full, and when people comment on her pessimism, she simply insists that she's being realistic. you can always rely on ara to tell you exactly what she thinks, regardless on how mean or horrible it makes her sound. she's also very sarcastic, and almost every second sentence out of her mouth is dripping with sarcasm. due to always being known as the “slut”, she's grown used to keeping her feelings bottled up, and sarcasm has become a natural instinct to hide what she's feeling inside. her walls are built up very high, and it is extremely difficult to get past them. breaking through her sarcasm is only the first layer, good luck getting through the rest. her sarcasm comes out naturally, and she always seems to have a sarcastic and often unnecessary comment to make. it makes her a bit of a handful to deal with, and is probably one of the reasons why most people are put off by her personality.

 + WITTY, WISE | those who know ara very well (which, really, is only her mother, her grandmother, MEAN and JENO), she's known to be a lot wittier and wiser than most people expect. she's very quick witted, and could almost be considered funny, if not for the fact that people are too busy judging her to find anything she says even remotely humorous. she's always got smart replies waiting on the tip of her tongue, which always seem to go hand in hand with her sarcasm. maybe in another universe, she could be the class clown, but for now she'll have to settle from being the bitchy girl at the back of the class. ara likes to thank her grandmother for most of her wisdom. as the only really parental figure ara had growing up, most of what she learnt came from her grandmother. it's part of the reason why a lot of her mannerisms seem very old fashioned, from the way she always stands with her back straight, and often sticks her pinky out when eating or drinking. but she's actually a relatively wise person, even if most people don't know it. she's smarter than she looks, even if she's got nothing on FIGHT DAY. honestly, she's really good at coming up with solutions to problems, and would be more than happy to help out anyone who asks. unfortunately, no one does, so she keeps her mouth shut, instead.

 + SECRETIVE, CLOSED OFF | given that ara has a secret relationship hidden from almost the entire town, she's pretty good at keeping secrets. but even before that, ara was a relatively secret person. she's never really liked having her business whispered about, but unfortunately for her, everyone seems to like gossiping about every little thing that she does. to be honest, it's no wonder that she's so closed off, because she's actually got insane trust issues. if there is one thing that she's come to learn, it is that she can trust no one. every time she thinks that she can trust someone, they always go and stab her in the back, and unfortunately, she's had to learn this the hard way. so instead, she's learned to keep her heart locked away, and keep her walls built up high. MEAN is her only confident, but even then, ara can be a bit selective over what she reveals. MEAN is the one person who knows the most about her, with JENO coming a close second, but that doesn't mean that ara has completely stripped down her walls to them. however, despite having difficulty trusting other people, ara is a very trustworthy person herself. she's good at keeping secrets, and is the type of person to take something to the grave with her. you don't need to worry about her spilling it, because regardless of the situation, ara will keep her lips sealed, and die with it locked away from the rest of the world. to everyone else in sal-in, she's simply the town's slut, but no one else really bothers to try and break down her walls. she's far more enigmatic than people realise, but maybe if they stopped labelling her as a whore for a few seconds, they'd come to realise it.

 + INDEPENDENT, AMBITIOUS | since ara grew up as an only child to a single mother, she needed to learn how to be independent pretty early in her life. her mother was often out working long hours trying to earn enough to provide both for herself and for her daughter, and because of this, ara was mostly left in the care of her grandmother. which was, fine, until her grandmother's help began to deteriorate. by the time ara was twelve, she had already learnt how to fend for herself, and was already practically raising herself, with little help from her mother. ara is also very ambitious. while she might not look it, she has plans to get a well paying job once she's old enough to leave sal-in for good. she wants to work as a lawyer, and she will do whatever it takes to make sure she qualifies for it. she's ambitious in the sense that she always wants what is best for her, and she wants to succeed. she doesn't want to just simply be known as the slut from sal-in for the rest of her life. she wants to prove to herself and to other people that she's more than capable of making it, and she's got an entire town full of people to prove wrong. she wants to make them take back everything they've ever said about her not going anywhere in life, and you can bet that ara is waiting to shove it in their faces.

 + FLIRTY, VAIN | to be fair, ara doesn't get her nickname as the slut of sal-in for no reason. ara isn't stupid, and she knows that she's fairly good looking. she can come off as a bit vain at times, because she actually really does care about her appearance and what she wears (she has a reputation to uphold), and sometimes she comes across as if she feels she's better than everyone else. mostly because she's annoyed that they already seem to have her entire personality predetermined, and none of them know anything about her. she's also very flirty. when she was younger, it used to be innocent, and it was her way of talking to her friends (not that she has many of them anymore). flirty comments came naturally for her, and at the time, people knew not to take them to far, and that they often never meant anything. then she got older, and people started flirting back, and she started dating. even now, a lot of the flirty things she says are really meant with a grain of salt, but she's protecting her real boyfriend, and should anyone find out about their relationship, she knows things could get very ugly. but at the same time, she's not entirely heartless, and she does feel bad for all the hearts of boys that she's breaking when they genuinely seem to be in to her. but sometimes, ara finds it hard to tell, because she's long past the point of knowing whether people are genuinely interested in her, or just want her as another prize to add to their collection.


BACKGROUND:
 + it’s safe to say that shin ara’s birth was not planned, and everyone knew it. ara was born in gwangju, south korea, to a single mother, and was the consequence of a bit too much alcohol and no protection from nine months ago (or eight months technically, since ara was born a month premature). and, if anything she's basically a walking reminder of what can happen if you don't have protected sex. which wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that the entire town of gwangju knew the exact the circumstances she was conceived under, and never let either ara or her mother forget it. at the time, her mother had only been eighteen, and was attending a college in gwangju. unfortunately, after having ara, she had to drop out to take care of her daughter, and instead, moved back to sal-in, where she grew up, to live with her mother. maybe it was for the best, ara sometimes thinks, because at least then she wouldn't have to deal with the whispers of the community in gwangju, gossiping about both her parents. she thinks sal-in is considerably better, because at least there, they only know her mother, and to the people of sal-in, ara's father is nothing but an unnamed man. after moving to sal-in, her mother was quick to find a job, working as a personal assistant to a ceo of a big company – ara can never remember the name of it, and she's now beyond the point of caring. and her mother's job, combined with her grandmother's life savings were enough to ensure that the small family were able to live comfortably, buying a medium sized apartment on the nicer side of time. honestly, ara would almost say that her life could have been ideal. the only issue was that her mother – the only parent she actually had – was never home. she worked long hours to try and work money, and that meant she rarely had time to look after ara instead, ara was left in the care of her grandmother during her childhood, and she has memories of weekend shopping and ice cream with her grandmother, and waiting at the school gates for her grandmother to pick her up every day.

 + during high school was when everything took a sharp turn. when she was younger, no one cared about her illegitimacy, or the fact that her mother was single and that she was a result of a hook up – hell, none of the other kids even knew what it meant, and ara herself was none the wiser. but then high school rolled around, and the other kids were now all up in ara's business, and once she started dating, she was quickly labelled the slut of sal-in. people used to gossip, and say that she took after her mother, and everyone used to say she'd end up the same way – a pregnant drop out by the time she was eighteen. ara's grown used to it now, and the things they say about her no longer bother her as much as they used to. she's used to the popularity that it brings, even though it's not something she'd like to be known for. if that's not bad enough, shortly before ara was supposed to start high school, her grandmother passed away. it was relatively sudden and unexpected, and it had come as a shock to everyone. ara, of course, took it the hardest. ara and her grandmother were extremely close, and in this world full of people who never really seemed to understand her, her grandmother was her only anchor. her mother was grieving, but her way of coping meant throwing herself into everything and anything, which meant more work hours. but ara's not stupid, and she's almost positive that her mother doesn't spend all those hours working. she doesn't have any proof, but she wouldn't be surprised if her mother is secretly seeing her boss. quite frankly, it would make sense, given the long hours that she's away. and if she is, well, at least ara knows where her own ability to keep a relationship a secret comes from.


FAMILY:

   - ara's thankful for everything her mother, does, she really is, since her mother is the only reason why they're able to live comfortably. but ara's not really close with her, because she's always working extra shifts at her company (even though ara's pretty sure her mother isn't "working") and rarely has any time to spend with ara, anyway, so most of the time, she's left home alone.

CURRENT LIFESTYLE:
 + honestly, ara may as well be living alone at this point, because it sure as hell feels like it. her mother never seems to be home, and the apartment they live in is nothing but a house, lacking an properties of a home. ara basically takes care of herself, cooking and cleaning, as her mother is always coming home late from working and leaving early the next morning. it's gotten to the point where ara has no problems sneaking people into her house, and frequently lets MEAN stay over, and sometimes even JENO, if she's had a particularly bad day. she's used to being known as the town's slut, and she's used to the gossip that follows her around on a daily basis, and it's gotten to the point where it doesn't bother her anymore, and she's learned to block it out completely. sometimes she wishes that her mother were home more often to spend time with her, or that her grandmother was still alive so that she could have someone to talk to, but if ara wants to live her lavish life, she supposes she has to make sacrifices, and one of those being company. her life isn't the most ideal, but at least she has a roof over her head, which is more than what can be said for some other people in the darker side of town.

HOW SHE MET YOUR LI:
 + they met through yeo jihoon, one of ara's (many) ex boyfriends, at a party thrown by someone that ara can't remember the name of (she doesn't really care much, either). jihoon is a tennis player too, and happened to be friends with jeno, hence why he had walked off to go and say hello to jeno at the party, all while dragging ara along with him, incase she got lost, or someone else tried to make a move on her (because several other boys had already tried). jeno had been sitting in the kitchen, drinking coke from a cup that he himself had poured, so he knew exactly what had gone into it. he'd had a few brief conversations with other students that he knew, but he was perfectly fine in his own company (and he was secretly hoping that no one from his fan club would try and approach him). when jihoon dragged ara into the kitchen to get drinks after arriving, he'd been quick to introduce the pair of them. ara had never spoken to jeno before, and she'd seen him briefly around school, but as she was particularly horrible with names and could never remember them, she'd never actually known who he was until then. unlike most other people when they become acquainted with ara, jeno had simply smiled, giving her that adorable eye smile of his and offered his hand to shake politely. ara had been expecting him to send her a look of disgust, or something along those lines, and had been shocked for a moment, staring at him for far too long before she regained her senses and hurriedly took his hand to shake, because ara didn't want to come off as rude. and, well, his smile was contagious, because ara found herself smiling back (even though it could have potentially been mistaken for a grimace, and probably wasn't that noticeable anyway). in that time, jihoon had somehow managed to be dragged away by someone else, leaving ara alone in his company, and his eye smile that hadn't disappeared in the five minutes she'd been in his presence. when some other guy came into the kitchen and tried to make a move on ara, despite her being visibly uncomfortable about it, jeno had "accidentally" spilled a drink down his shirt and pretended to be apologetic about it. ara decided right then and there that surely this boy couldn't be too bad, and maybe he'd be someone worth getting to know.

HOW THEY STARTED DATING:
 + they got close through jihoon, who kept dragging ara out to various places to study with him and jeno, and for some reason, he didn't seem to try and push ara away simply because of her reputation. ara doesn't know this, but jeno liked her because she was one of the few people who didn't throw herself at him when they first met, and he's sick and tired of all the people of his fan club that keep trying to get with him. he'd heard about your reputation, but he was the sort of person who liked to make his own observations of other people, and not listen to the gossip, and so far, you didn't seem like a half bad person. however, after ara and jihoon broke up, ara assumed that would be the end of her somewhat friendship with jeno (if she could even call it that), but he pleasantly surprised her when he came to sit with her in her hidden corner of the library (how he found it, ara's not sure, because she sits there when she's hiding from everyone). ara had been surprised, because she wasn't expecting him to make an effort to remain friends with her, but he'd simply waved it away by telling her that he considered them friends and that he enjoyed her company. even though ara went on to date three more people after jihoon, jeno never judged her for it, and instead was the person there who told her that she deserved better than them. ara wasn't sure why he was still hanging around, because she knew that being seen with her would destroy his reputation, and she knew that if his parents caught wind of their exchanges, he'd be in big trouble. however, jeno didn't seem to care at all, and would turn down all of her worries with that eye smile of his and offer her chocolate instead. he liked to think they had a bit in common – he was well like and had people flocking at his feet to try and date him, while ara was sought after by majority of the male population of sal-in, despite her reputation – so he thought they made a pretty good match. and he was just glad to spend some time with someone who didn't try and throw themselves at him (even though he wouldn't have minded if ara did). they only got together a couple of weeks after that, when he was walking her home, because he's a gentleman and didn't want her to walk home alone because it was late. ara protested at first, since she didn't want him to go out of his way just to walk her home, but he insisted, walking her back home to her empty apartment, where her mother was away on another business trip with her boss. he stopped outside the front door of her apartment, and just as she was turning around to say goodbye to him, he dipped his head down and went in to kiss, her catching ara completely off guard. stunned, she hadn't done anything, which had led to jeno panicking, and getting ready to make a quick exit, only for ara to stop him by whispering "do that again." in response, all she had gotten was the brightest smile of his she'd ever seen.

HOW THEY HANDLE THEIR SECRET RELATIONSHIP:
 + probably not in the best way, if they're totally honest, because ara still has to keep up her reputation, and she needs to continue to lead on guys like she did even before jeno. except now she feels even worse about it, because before, at least they had a chance, but now she's going out with them knowing that she's going to dump them because they've got nothing on jeno. quite frankly, there relationship getting out to the public won't have any major effect on ara. but she knows that jeno's reputation is the exact opposite of her's, and she knows that people will judge them for it, and she definitely does not want to jeno to be put under that sort of scrutiny. she also knows that his parents would in no way ever approve of her, and she knows that his parents would much rather him date someone like FIGHT DAY or X SONG. it's horrible, and ara hates it, because she wants nothing more than to curl up to jeno all the time, even though she knows that she can't. she still has to go out with a load of guys, but she's gotten to the point where she's blatantly dodging kisses, and always goes running to jeno as soon as any of her "dates" are over.


SOME SCENES:
 + jeno playing the guitar for ara, because she's always had an interest in learning to play an instrument, but her mother was never home enough to notice, so she never really got to learn anything. but jeno knows how to play the guitar, even though he claims not to be good at it, since he spends so much time playing tennis, and ara thinks it's the most fascinating thing and could sit there and watch and listen to him playing the guitar for hours

 + jeno almost getting caught at ara's house, after she invites him over, but MEAN turns up half way through, and ara has to hide him under her bed and get MEAN out of her room long enough for him to climb out the window, and he has to try and balcony hop. ara feels so bad about the whole thing, but jeno just keeps assuring her that it's okay

 + forehead kisses !!! because jeno just really really really likes to kiss her forehead, mostly because he's taller than her. and they always make ara smile, because she's never really had a boyfriend who's enjoyed kissing her forehead and her cheek

 + midnight snacking with MEAN, when she comes over during the night, and ara sneaks her in, not that she thinks her mother will care anyway, and ara smuggles ice cream and other snacks into her room and they sit their giggling and gossiping for most of the night

 + another party where someone is trying to hit on ara again, even though she's made it explicitly clear that she doesn't want to get with anyone that night, and jeno can see her discomfort from across the room. he's not really sure what to do, because he can't make their relationship obvious, so he pretends to drunkenly stumble on the guy to give ara enough to time hurry off and find MEAN

 + lowkey cute brotp moments between ara and jaemin, because i honestly think they would be cute friends if ara opened up to him a bit more. but even though they're not as close as they could be, jaemin still stands up for her a lot, and tries to stop some of the particularly nasty rumours about ara from spreading around school

HOW DOES SHE FEEL ABOUT:
+ GALAXY
  they don't really talk much, even though their social circles seem to overlap quite a bit. not to mention, GALAXY tends to stay away from other people, and ara doesn't usually let people in past her walls, too used to people shunning her for being a slut. they'd probably have a lot in common, if they were friends, but really, they're both much too cautious around each other, and given that GALAXY is close with FREESIA, ara wouldn't be too surprised she didn't like her, because FREESIA most certainly doesn't.

+ MEAN
  MEAN is her closest friend, and only confident. they've both been labelled as the school's reigning bitches, and while the rest of the student population is busy shaming them, they've quickly become friends. even though ara is still a relatively secretive person, MEAN is the one person that she trusts the most. if she doesn't trust something with MEAN, she won't trust it with anyone. MEAN is known for being the queen bee, a title that ara is glad that she doesn't have, even though she's right on par with MEAN in terms of popularity, because they're both popular for all the wrong reasons. ara also happens to be one of the few people who can escape the wrath of mean.

+ FREESIA
  funnily enough, despite FREESIA also being known as a troublesome teenager in town, she and ara don't get along. FREESIA has made it quick clear that she doesn't like either ara or mean, so naturally, both girls return the favour. quite frankly, neither of them get along very well, and even though it's usually MEAN that pokes fun at her, ara doesn't really do much about it, so really, it's no surprise that there's a mutual hatred between them, because ara is the type of person to hate anyone who hates her.

+ CHOCOLATE
  CHOCOLATE is known for her happy nature, and everyone seems to like her, something that definitely cannot be said for ara. she's mildly jealous, because honestly, even though she's come to terms with being the town slut, there's a deep deep deep part of her that just wants to be well liked, too. she's not close with CHOCOLATE, and she doesn't think she ever truly will be, but ara seems to have a soft spot for her, and usually tries to tell MEAN to leave the girl alone.

+ X SONG
  she's another person that seems to be loved by many, ara's boyfriend included. and while she knows that her boyfriend isn't going to go running off to her any time soon, ara still can't stand the girl, and doesn't understand why everyone seems to love her so much. ara thinks that she's too nice, and she wants to know how on earth it is possible for someone to be that nice all the time. no one can be that nice to everyone, surely. ara knows that X SONG doesn't particularly like her or MEAN either.

+ FIGHT DAY
  they get along surprisingly well, much to the surprise of people. not that they're best friends, or anything, just that they're capable of having civil conversations with each other without throwing jabs back and forth. if they were ever paired up for a project, they would easily get top marks, no doubt about it. ara honestly doesn't mind her company, because unlike some of the others, she doesn't seem to automatically go in an judge her for the amount of ex boyfriends she has, probably because FIGHT DAY is hiding a bigger secret.

+ MARK
  honestly, ara isn't close with him. he's mr perfect, and again, everything that she's not. it doesn't help the fact that she's the type of person that his parents probably told him to stay away from. the town of sal-in can't have the presidents son getting chummy chummy with the slut who's basically gone out with everyone. not to mention, ara doesn't really get along with his sister, either, which would probably prevent her and mark from getting close

+ RENJUN
  ara literally knows nothing about him. she knows that he's popular and more on the quiet side, a stark contrast to a lot of the kids at school, but other than that, ara couldn't tell you anything about him. she knows he's popular on social media for his aesthetics, but ara thinks he's very enigmatic, and if she could be bothered she'd probably try and figure out exactly who he is. but ara's too lazy to do that, and she's never really had to urge to find out all his dirty little secrets

+ JENO
  as her (secret) boyfriend, ara completely adores him. he's a lot different to every single one of her other boyfriends, and ara is glad. she genuinely likes jeno, and she hopes that they last a long time, because after everything that her ex boyfriends have put her through, jeno is a breath of fresh air. he's a lot more caring, and doesn't seem to want to date her just to show her off to his friends, and be abel to say that he's dated shin ara. ara really cares about him, and it's for that reason that she's doing everything she possibly can to make sure that their relationship doesn't get out.

+ DONGHYUCK
  ara doesn't particularly like him that much, because she thinks he's too loud and annoying. plus, she knwos that he's friends with FREESIA, and ara has a tendency to avoid the people who FREESIA is close with, because no doubt they'll all be on her side of this feud that the pair seem to have. it's not to say that ara hates him or anything, but she's more indifferent towards him than anything, really.

+ JAEMIN
  one of ara's only other friends. she knows that jaemin has a soft spot for her given how similar they are personality wise, so in a way, she sort of relates to him. the only issue ara has is that people seem to love him for it, while ara gets shunned. she's not really sure how to describe their relationship, because a part of her hates him – why is it that she gets shunned for the same reason that he is loved? – but at the same time, she knows that he stands up for her. ara can never really bring herself to truly hate him, because he's one of the few people who does it. they're friends even despite FREESIA, and honestly, ara doesn't actually mind jaemin's company that much, even if she doesn't trust him with her secrets.

  ara low key has a soft spot for him, not that she'd ever admit it. usually, she's not too fond of rich and spoiled people, but she's come to notice that he uses his money for good and charity. not that she really does much with this knowledge, because quite frankly, he seems to be terrified of her. so even though ara's not close to him, and has trouble even getting close to him without him giving her terrified looks, she usually stops MEAN from picking on him, too.

+ JISUNG
  as he appears to seem to hate everyone, ara tends to leave him alone. she's not really sure what to think of him, but since he's so hostile towards everyone, ara dislike him on principle. she doesn't really know much about him at all, and she doesn't really think they'll ever get that close, really. however, she pities him for the murder of his parents, and his rough childhood, not that she'll ever tell him that.

OTHER IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN HER LIFE:
 + YEO JIHOON – EX BOYFRIEND
   - he's one of her many ex boyfriends, and holds the title of being her longest lasting boyfriend 9a record that's been broken by jeno, not that anyone else in town knows it). he just so happens to be the very reason why ara is dating jeno today, since he was the one who first introduced them. people quite simply tend to brush him off as one of ara's many flings, but in all honesty, ara knows that she did feel something towards him at the time, even if it's long gone now. he's also one of the few "boyfriends" of arrows, who didn't completely go off his rocker after they broke up. he respected ara's decision, and seemed keen to remain friends. ara thinks he's a nice person, and someone that she would be willing to have as a friend, but she doesn't entirely trust him, not yet, and she's still scared to let him get to close to her. ara also thinks that he suspects that she has an actual boyfriend, but he never really says anything about it, and ara's glad. honestly, she wishes all of her exes could be a bit like jihoon, because maybe then people wouldn't be gossiping about her business and the non-existent things she's done with boyfriends, and maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't be as much as an outcast as she is today.
