  8. >managed to land a job at a plant planning maintenance
  9. >never fit in with the millwrights, but didn't wear a suit either
  10. >learned to keep my mouth shut in the management meetings
  11. >left alone for the most part, even the monsters forgot I existed
  12.
  13. >plant manager was a succubus, always followed around by a little gaggle of sycophants
  14. >as long as keep my head down I'm not a threat to them
  15. >technically she's my supervisor
  16. >don't really talk
  17.
  18. >crews come and go
  19. >little emperors come and go
  20. >years pass like this
  21. >only constant is the succubus and I
  22. >we nod at each other every once in a while
  23. >starting to get some white in the beard
  24. >paid off a small house on a shorefront lot looking over the ocean
  25.
  26. >made it to 42 years old today
  27. >one year longer than the old man
  28. >don't drink much, but tonight's an exception
  29. >walk into the local pub, grab beer and a menu, head to a table
  30. >almost missed my boss sitting in the corner booth staring at a girly drink
  31. >figure she's probably waiting for someone
  32. >woman like her probably has three incubi waiting on her at home
  33. >evening starts getting longer
  34. >pub starts filling up
  35. >succubus is still sitting alone
  36. >tray worth of glasses cover my table before I get enough courage to say hello
  37. >best be leaving my table for another customer anyway
  38.
  39. >she's half a dozen drinks in and poking at her ice
  40. >slide in opposite her before she notices
  41. >her surprise causes her to jump, nearly tipping her drink before she catches it
  42. >anger flashes before recognition dawns across her face
  43. >explain that it's my birthday and since we're both alone I should buy us a round
  44. >she already knows it's my birthday since it's the one time a year I go drinking
  45. >ask her a few semi-personal questions and get polite but evasive answers
  46. >few more rounds and she's tipping over
  47. >time to make sure she gets home
  48. >settle tab and got her arm over my shoulder
  49. >ask her where home is as we stumble to a cab
  50. >get a bitter reply that she doesn't have a home only a place to live
  51. >pay buddy to get her home safe after we stop at the end of my driveway
  52. >the walk is sobering, but the house doesn't feel as warm as it usually does
  53.
  54. >next morning
  55. >sitting in another meeting called by yet another sycophant trying to curry favour with the boss
  56. >notice that the boss is a touch lighter blue today
  57. >she looks as tired as you feel
  58. >our eyes meet for split second before going back to our respective notes
  59. >came back from lunch to find the boss and Personal Assistant "A" waiting my office
  60. >drug and alcohol spot check
  61. >pass every year
  62. >unfazed until I saw the half bottle of whiskey on the desk
  63. >I've seen this trick before when the little emperor's off each other
  64. >stash a bottle or bag of something in your office and call a drug inspection
  65. >curious that the boss herself is here for this though
  66. >a slight curl on the assistant's lips betrays the culprit
  67. >the succubus asks whether I got anything to say for myself
  68. >there's nothing to say
  69. >she asks the assistant to leave the room
  70. >close the door behind her
  71.
  72. >boss knows that I have a perfect record
  73. >she asks why
  74. >tell her that I've never once drank on the job
  75. >I know this is how people are "let go"
  76. >if she simply asked, I'd have quit
  77. >my actions at the bar were innocent, but I was sorry if they offended
  78. >silence falls over us as she stares that the floor
  79. >we both know that she has to let me go
  80. >she asks if I'll be ok
  81. >I'll live, didn't get this far being too stupid
  82.
  83. >she calls the assistant in
  84. >the smug bitch can hardly keep a straight face
  85. >get told that my employment is terminated for violating company policy
  86. >she turns to her assistant
  87. >asks the assistant to explain why she felt compelled to frame "her best and most loyal employee"
  88. >boss' red eyes are starting to glow a bit, wings are starting to spread, the odd fang peaks through
  89. >girl done fucked up and she's starting to realise it
  90. >I gently squeeze the succubus' shoulder and the anger breaks instantly
  91. >turn to the assistant and explain that my job was to keep my guys safe
  92. >my last act was to keep her alive
  93. >the girl flees from the office in terror
  94. >boss watches me load the box with my personal things and escorts me to the gate for the last time
  95. >as we both faced the rows of cars she asked me if I was going to be ok
  96. >that's a question for me, but seems like she's asking herself
  97. >as I step away I tell her that we'll be fine
  98.
  99. >one particular Saturday morning dawns to the blubber of the percolator and a knock on the door
  100. >an opened door finds my (former) boss bundled against the cold
  101. >she's pretty happy to wrap those slender fingers around a cup of joe
  102. >give her the penny tour
  103. >get some compliments about the home and view
  104. >it's "cozy" as she puts it
  105. >laugh and tell her that it lacks a woman's touch, but I do my best
  106.
  107. >her last day was yesterday, decided to quit and leave all the bullshit behind
  108. >all her 'friends' wouldn't even talk to her when she announced it
  109. >jokes on them apparently, head office is sending a danuki to be the acting PM
  110. >she gets suddenly serious
  111. >she asks if it's too late for an old succubus like her to pick up where she left off
  112. >don't know much about succubi to be honest
  113. >after peeling myself out of the seat to refill our coffees, I add a drop of irish cream to each
  114. >handing her cup back, I tell her as much
  115. >also tell her it's a shame that the old house hasn't had a woman's touch
  116. >from the smile behind her cup I got a feeling that I'll be taking orders from the new boss in no time
