-
Grand Melee VIII: 2Spooky8GM
- It's time one and all for another GM! I know, I know, it feels like it's been forever. This GM will be crossposted both on UPN and on Discord for the entirety of the GM, so regardless of whether you're new to PASBL or an old hand just wanting to swing by, feel free to join. And best of all? All entries are completely anonymous. Onto the standard rules!
-

Everyone will be able to sign up who wants to and participate with no limits to participants! Yes, I am a madman.
-
Weather moves, due to the nature of this GM, will be impossible to use. Each Pokemon will only get to use a single Room or Terrain attack, and a single use of Gravity. Gravity, Room, and Terrain moves will be most potent within a 20 foot radius around the player and a weakened effect out an additional 10 feet, so 30 feet of coverage in total.
-
Magic Room can be easily seen into and have attacks fired into and out of, with the room immediately tapering off into the regular terrain at its edge.
-
Getting the most damage on a Pokemon that ends up KO'd will cause your Pokemon to become refreshed, recovering a Heavy amount of energy. Landing the final blow on a Pokemon will restore Good energy in this manner if the trainer did not deal the most damage to the fainting Pokemon.
-
Additionally, to encourage other types of play, the player than lands the final blow on a Pokemon will additionally be rewarded half a KO if they were not the one to deal the most damage, with the trainer who did the most damage still receiving the full KO credit. At the end of the Melee, if a trainer has only a fraction of a KO in this manner, it will be rounded upwards (i.e. 1.5 -> 2) for consistency.
- Grand Melee Info:
- Rules
- This time around all Pokemon choices will be Rental Only, though you do get to choose your Pokemon's gender (if applicable) and Hidden Power. The full list of Rental Pokemon can be found below.
- I will be acting as the referee for the GM, and a strict 24 hour deadline for submission of orders will be enforced, and not sending movement or attacks will have the Pokemon play passively and attempt to dodge as necessary. Missing 3 deadlines will have you disqualified.
- Due to the potential number of participants, the GM will be done in a 4/6 Health/Energy scale, so be cautious. Oh, and this time around things may be a bit more... realistic. Whatever that means.
- Info on Rental Pokemon
-
The following Pokemon can be chosen to be rented, with the trainer picking the Pokemon's gender (if applicable) and Hidden Power. While there is no hard limit on the number of a single species that can be used, if I feel like too many of the same Pokemon are being used I will strike the species from the list and tell everyone who has picked it to choose another Pokemon instead, so be wary of your choices! This list will also see a few additions after the stream a bit before Round 0, and you will be given the opportunity to change your choice at that point if you so choose.

- Basic Info
- Trainers will see/hear whatever your Pokemon sees/hears via a super dooper indestructible headset. This will allow you to see/hear what it sees, as well as issue orders. The effects of these have been reduced in order to allow different types of gameplay. Trainers will be provided with information in their personal reffings indicating what their Pokemon knows to be directly around them.
- The casters of the event will be casting from a platform above the middle of the arena. Their casters booth is a large room floating in the air. They will provide reffing coverage based on what they can see down below, as well as a few hidden cameras around the arena. This is what everyone will see each round and will be referred to as the "general reffing". Each trainer will also receive a personalized reffing (with much less detail if there is not much happening) to say what they see and hear, etc.
- Our "at the scene" correspondents this time around will be Aurelius the Alakazam and Ismene the Gardevoir. Both will simply observe and use defensive techniques to prevent being hit. Aurelius will typically stick to larger fights, while Ismene's camera is a bit weaker so it will be following different Pokemon every now and again so everyone can see a bit of the little things people are doing.
- Signing Up
- As mentioned earlier, any number of people may sign up to participate. Signups will close Monday, September 30 at 6 PM Mountain, and because streams are a GM tradition, I will do an RNG stream Sunday afternoon or evening which will add a few Pokemon to the Rental list based off submissions by those who have signed up at that point. After the stream is done, you will have until signups close to change your Pokemon choice if you desire to do so.
- All signups are completely anonymous. This means you will sign up by sending me either a PM or DM sometime before 6 PM Mountain on Monday, September 30 telling me the Pokemon you are using from the rental list, as well as its gender (if applicable) and Hidden Power. These choices can be changed at any point prior to the deadline. Those who sign up before the start of the stream on Sunday may also submit a single Pokemon species to be added to the RNG pool and potentially added to the Rental list.
- So now, let's get into the actual distinguishing factors of this GM:
- The Arena
-
Welcome to the Nightmare Graveyard!
-
- The dark, foreboding arena that once served to house the dead of ASB, before modern safety standards were brought into place to prevent that sort of thing entirely. It is said that the Nightmare Graveyard is permanently covered by the shroud of night, and the moon is always full here. A thick layer of fog permeates the entire arena, making visibility more than thirty feet or so very difficult. As the Nightmare Graveyard has not see use in such a long time, it has fallen into a bit of disrepair, and some areas have been deemed to dangerous even now to allow venturing into. As such, the approved areas for combat and adventure are The Church, The Graveyard, The Forest of Shadows, The Swamp of Evil, and The Bog of the Reaper. As this area is incredibly dangerous, however, modern safety standards cannot be as easily enforced, so some things may be a bit more realistic.
- The Church
- The church is a terrifying place. Rumor has it that the place is haunted, cursed by an incredibly edgy backstory that only Mozz could write. This church is obviously old; there is a small courtyard, and several stonewalls surrounding the church. Being the only hallowed ground here, this place seems to ward off spirits naturally, making it a decent place to run should you be chased by one. The church has a steepled roof, giving much room amidst the rafters for an aerial battle. While the ringing of bells is said to be heard here, the bell tower itself lacks one entirely, only a soft red light that permeates the fog.
- The Graveyard
- The eastern section of the arena is made up of a large graveyard, meant to house the many predicted dead of PASBL. However, as death was a very rare occurence, the large majority of these graves are empty. The ground here is very uneven, so running is not recommended, and plenty of graves are dug by not filled, leaving a large amount of places to hide and ambush foes. Tombstones, statues, and all other kinds of markers and placed almost randomly, making it difficult to navigate successfully, however the red light of the church is easy to see. Another feature that can be recognized is the mausoleum, a small stone building, blocked with a large stone slab. The slab is very hard to move.
- The Forest of Shadows
- The northern section of the arena is the Forest of Shadows, recieving its name from the countless shadows the moon projects against the trees. There are dirt pathways through the forests, and the trees are more spread apart. They are dark and brown in appearance, these trees are gnarled and dying; and on occasion, the bark takes the form of a tormented face.
- The Swamp of Evil
- Taking up most of the southern section of the arena, the Swamp of Evil is a thick marsh with sticky mud and fairly dense fog. Despite the mud towards the banks of the swamp, it is easy to navigate. The trees here are much slimmer that previous ones, mainly because they are aquatic adapted plants. Will o' the Wisp, small ghostly balls, float around the swamp of evil. They try to avoid you, and offer a light damaging zap if you touch them.
- The Bog of the Reaper
- The Bog of the Reaper is yet another terrifying place. It was named for a flying skeletal ghost that used to slay all in the Nightmare Graveyard; a creature that wielded an enormous scythe. I must confirm that no such creature has existed, but if it did, it would only appear when a Pokemon is near death to slay it. In more realistic terms, the Bog of the Reaper is an oddity. It combines some aspects of the swamp of evil and forest of ghosts, with some large, dying trees standing up amidst the murky water. These sometimes offer vines and vegetation, but otherwise the bog of the reaper is thicker flooded woodland. There is an unnaturally thick fog that lurks here, and the pools are deeper and thicker than the swamp of evil. Unlike its cousin, the bog of the reaper harbors few Will o' the Wisp, but lurking here is not recommended, lest you run into the rumored Dark Feraligatr.
- Spirits
- The Nightmare Graveyard is a truly ancient place, and its design to house the dead spirits of ASB means that those who fall here may find themselves wandering long after as spirits. Spirits can no longer hold items and have heavy restrictions on their abilities and point gain, but their bloodlust is greatly raised, dealing extra damage to Pokemon of the same type as the ones that defeated them. No longer having a corporeal form, they are much weaker in constitution that most Pokemon, but they cannot be removed forever, always returning from the grave after a time.
- While this GM is back to our original system of "yes please feel free to murder eachother immediately", there are some other interesting bits of the arena that will net you some points, and as the Nightmare Graveyard thirsts for blood, those in an advantageous position may not find themselves that way for long.
- Points System:
- 2 possible points per KO (1 for final blow, 1 for most damage dealt)
- 1-2 points for items found (1 for held items, 2 for rare items)
- 3 points for any secrets found
- 2 points for each achievement earned
- Up to 5 points for [REDACTED FOR MYSTERY]
- Defeating anyone in the most recently posted Top 3 will also grant you points equal to half of their posted total, rounded up
- Spirits gain points at half the rate of living Pokemon
- All 1 point items that can be found will be something currently purchasable from the Mart, and rare 2 point items are significantly more potent, with their descriptions being provided to the player when they are found.
- Achievements this time around will not be revealed ahead of time, however there will be a total of five and they are entirely predetermined.
- The Schedule
- Sunday the 29th - Deadline for Rental List Addition Submission and Rental List Addition RNG Stream
- Monday the 30th @ 7 PM MDT - Deadline for Entries; Round 0 to come shortly thereafter
- Tuesday the 1st - Thursday the 31st - All attacks must be given to myself by 7 PM MDT. That will be the deadline every day. I will try my absolute best to have the reffing that night before I go to sleep. If something goes wrong and/or I get preoccupied, I will post and say there's a delay and ref ASAP. That is the only time there isn't a deadline the next day. Otherwise, every 7 PM MDT will be the deadline, regardless of when at night the round was reffed. If you cannot do this, then please do not sign up.
- To continue to quote [s]Miror[/s] [s]myself[/s] Kuno, due to the nature of this massive undertaking, I will not be able to re-ref anything. I'm sorry if this is going to screw someone over, as mistakes do happen but...barring hp/energy mistakes or huuuuge errors, changing how a round was reffed will take as long as doing an entire round. It's not just a matter of editing my general round reffing, but I'd have to look up who was involved and send changed DMs and PMs to people. It wont be easy so I want to avoid it. If small mistakes were made then I apologize.
- Please take any questions to the Time Out thread. This thread is for reffings only.
- Remember for your signups that you DM or PM me to signup with your Rental Pokemon choice, gender (if applicable), and Hidden Power, as well as your Rental List Addition Submission if you are signing up prior to the stream.
- Have fun and good luck!
