Roman military tribune Clavius remains set in his ways after serving 25 years in the army. I saw &quot;Risen&quot;, starring Joseph Fiennes-Hercules_2014, Enemy at the Gates, Oh Yeah, this is the actor that was just announced as playing Michael Jackson in a new TV movie called &#39;Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon&#39;; Peter Firth-Pearl Harbor, Amistad; Tom Felton-Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the Harry Potter movies and Cliff Curtis-Fear the Walking Dead_tv, Live Free or Die Hard.<br/><br/>This is sort of an unofficial sequel to the 2004 &#39;The Passion of the Christ&#39;. The story covers the 40 days following the resurrection of Jesus and it is told from the point of view of a Roman non-believer. Joseph is the Roman that is given the assignment by Peter-his Roman boss-of finding the body of Jesus before he can perform his resurrection. Tom is an aide to Joseph in the man hunt and Cliff plays Jesus, or Yeshua, as he is called here. After the crucifixion, Cliff&#39;s body disappears and Peter is afraid if he does pull off his resurrection, the Messiah just might create an uprising in Jerusalem, just as Peter&#39;s big boss is planning on paying a visit. As Joseph and Tom search, Joseph begins having doubts about his mission and starts to think that just maybe Cliff can do what he says. I liked how it&#39;s not a bang-you-over-the-head-with-how-good-Christians-are type of biblical movie. It just tells the story without getting too preachy. It&#39;s rated &quot;PG-13&quot; for violence and some disturbing images and has a running time of 1 hour &amp; 47 minutes. I don&#39;t think I would buy it on DVD but it would be a good rental.
Christian films of late are factory made to appeal only to a certain kind of dim-witted Christian, stroking their egos and assuring them that they&#39;re right and that everyone else is evil and out to get them. Risen, a film which depicts the resurrection of Christ, is certainly a big step up from the likes of God&#39;s Not Dead. I wouldn&#39;t call it &quot;good,&quot; per se, but it&#39;s more than competent. It&#39;s not quite as rousing as the epics of the &#39;50s, but in some ways I like it&#39;s smaller approach better than something like The Robe. Joseph Fiennes stars as a Roman tribune who witnesses the crucifixion of Jeshua (man of all races Cliff Curtis). When the body goes missing, he is assigned to find it. This long stretch of the film is its biggest problem, because it&#39;s rather dull. When Fiennes does find Jesus, well, I wouldn&#39;t say it becomes fantastic or anything, but it definitely gets more interesting. I would say the big scene where he meets Jesus is quite good. It would be easy to accuse Fiennes of being one note, but I thought his performance was pretty good. He&#39;s a man in shock, and he plays it all very well.
Risen veers so far off the Bible’s path that it might as well be a tale of this 13th apostle, called Marty, who was in charge of snacks and mini-golf reservations.
