  1. By using classless addressing and CIDR-notation, the number of entries in a routers routing table can be reduced. This can be illustrated with a small example: suppose that a routing table has three entries according to table 1. The first two entries have the same next hop address for two different, contiguous networks. With CIDR-notation they can be aggregated to only one entry as shown in table 2. With fewer entries, the search time for the next hop of an incoming packet will be reduced. The aggregation will also result in fewer route advertisements sent between routers.
