Chapter 201 - 'Foreboding'

　家に帰り、家族に報告した。

　ここ最近、出張に赴く際には詳しく言わない事も多い。
　けど、今回はちょっと時間も掛かりそうだから説明しておきたかった。

　まず、我が事務所にシーローン王国へ直通する転移魔法陣は無い。
　ゆえに事務所を経由する場合、王竜王国で馬車を購入し、シーローン王国へと行く形になる。
　以前、王竜王国からシーローンまで移動した時は４ヶ月掛かった。
　途中で町を捜索しつつの事だった事を考慮すると、急げば２ヶ月ちょっとで到着できる。
　２ヶ月。
　てことは、往復で４ヶ月だ。
　エリスがあと３ヶ月で出産する事を考えると、どうあがいても間に合わない。

　もちろん、ペルギウスに頼んでシーローン王国まで直通にしてもらえば事足りる。
　ザノバはペルギウスとの交友が深い。
　ザノバは市場で見つけた出来のいい絵画や人形などを持ち込んでは、ペルギウスと二人で品評会をしている。
　ペルギウスが気に入ったものがあれば献上する事もあるという。
　それだけ仲がいいのなら、ザノバが頼めば嫌とは言わないはずだ。

　もっとも、それで移動期間を一ヶ月以内に大幅短縮できたとして、
　シーローン王国内で、ザノバを説得するのに、どれだけ時間が掛かるかわからない。
　俺自身が何をすればいいのか、わかっていないからな。
　何かを倒して帰ってくるだけなら簡単だろうが、パックスは倒してはいけないという事だ。
　思いの他、時間が掛かってしまう可能性も高い。

I returned home and reported to my family.

If there was something that Pelugius liked, Zanoba would give it to him.

Since they were that friendly with each other, if Zanoba asked him for help, he likely wouldn't refuse.


However, though that would shorten it to within a month which was a huge difference, I don't know how long it'll take to persuade Zanoba.

After all, I don't know what it is I should be doing myself.

It'd be simple if I just had to go there, kill someone, and then go home, but I was told not to kill Pax.

There was a high chance that time would be taken up by things I didn't expect.

「というわけで、いつ戻ってこれるかわかりません」

　夕食の場で、そう宣言した。
　相変わらずノルンはいない。いつもの事だし、仕方ない。
　ともあれ、シルフィ以下、ゼニス以外の全員が揃っている。

　日数以外にも、ひと通りの話の話はした。
　ただ一つ、ヒトガミの罠が待ち構えている可能性については言わなかった。
　可能性にすぎないし。
　エリスあたりが無理についてこられても困る。
　少し卑怯だろうが、そのお陰で反対はされなかった。

"And so, I don't know when I'll be back."


I declared at dinner.

As usual, Norn wasn't there. It's what happened all the time, so it couldn't be helped.

　シルフィはそう言いながら引っ込んだ。
　見ると、ロキシーもその通りだと言わんばかりに手をにぎにぎしている。
　経験者によると、出産においては俺の手のぬくもりが重要らしい。

"Hangon, Eris? Aren't you agreeing a little too readily?"

"Even if Rudeus isn't here, I can at least do something like give birth."

　エリス一人を残すとなると心配だが、
　俺には他にも頼れる妻と妹と母がいる。
　何の問題もない。寄りかからせてもらおう。

Aisha's words summed it up.

It seems that Sylphy normally supported me from the background.

If Eris was left by herself I'd be worried, but besides me there'll be my reliable wife, my reliable sister and her reliable mother.

　そんな可能性はあるわけがない。
　ロキシーの教育を受けたら、最低のクズ野郎でも多少は立派になれたんだ。
　ロキシーのせいであるはずがない。
　原因は別だ。

"But just being a home tutor doesn't mean that you teach him absolutely everything, right?"

Whilst saying this, Roxy glanced at Lara.

Lara looked at me with sleepy-looking eyes.

I don't know if she wanted to say something, but she was staring at me.


It seems that Roxy was a little troubled.

It might be that were it not for our child and her job, she'd want to come along with me.

　ひとまず、そう言っておく。
　転移事件が起きなかった場合、ロキシーがパックスの家庭教師になるかどうかはわからない。

　その上、今回はヒトガミが裏で操っているであろう可能性も高い。
　仮にロキシーに教えられた事で、本来の歴史とは違う教育を受けたとしても、その程度で大きく変わりはしないはずだ。
　だから、現状を生み出したのはロキシーのせいじゃない。

To start with, I said that.

I don't know if Roxy would've become Pax's home tutor were it not for the Transfer Incident.

But in the end, Pax would've thrown the coup and become king.

On top of that, this time the chance that Hitogami was pulling the strings behind this was high.

Even if we assumed that the things Roxy taught were different to what Pax learnt in the original history, it shouldn't have much such a huge difference.

　だが、魔術の基礎を教えたのは俺だ。それ以外にも、いろんな事を教えたと思う。
　もしそんな彼女が、転移事件の後、アリエルのところに行かなくて、俺に教えてもらった魔術で殺人や強盗を繰り返すようになっていたら。
　俺はどう思うだろうか。
　やはり、教え方を間違えた、自分に責任がある、止めたい、言い聞かせたいと思うだろうか。

　彼女の隣に座るルーシーが、俺とシルフィの顔を交互に見ている。
　なんの話？　って顔だ。
　かわいい。
　でもまだ早い。夜のレスラーの駆け引きを知るには早い。

　最後にオチがついた所で、会合は終わりとしよう。

"Umm, Rudy, what's wrong?"

"Nah, I was just thinking that 'In the past, Sylphy really listened to what I said, huh?'."

"What are you saying all of a sudden? I listen to you even now, don't I? I mean just the other day, even though I said it was embarassing, you got carried away, and I..."

"Let's stop talking about that in front of a child."

Lucy who was sitting beside was looked at me, then Sylphy.

She was making a face like 'what's this?'.

How cute.

But it's too early for her. It's too early for her to learn 'night wrestling' tactics.

　ふと、泣き声が鳴り響いた。
　見ると、普段はあまり泣かないララが、ロキシーの腕の中で泣いていた。
　俺の方を見て、俺の方に手を伸ばして泣いていた。

Suddenly, the sounds of crying rang out through the room.

When I looked at her, Lara who normally didn't cry much was crying in Roxy's arms.

She was looking in my direction, and crying with her hand stretched out towards me.

「ララ、どうしました？　よしよし……」

　ロキシーが慌ててなだめるも、一向に泣き止まない。
　ララがこれほど激しく泣くのは、初めてかもしれない。
　この重苦しい空気に、耐えきれなくなったのだろうか。
　俺の方を見て、手を伸ばして、必死に泣いている。

"Byaaaa! Aaaaa!"

"Lara, what's the matter? There, there..."


Roxy was confused and stroked her, but she didn't stop crying at all.

This might have been the first time Lara had cried so intensely.

Was it that she couldn't bear this heavy atmosphere?

　俺はロキシーからララを受け取り、抱っこしてみた。

　それを嫌がって泣いたのだとしたら、ちょっと感激だが……。
　今までこんな事はなかったよな。
　今回はちょっと空気が違うから、何かを感じたのだろうか。

"Rudy..."

"Yeah."


I took Lara from Roxy's arms, and held her.

The moment I held her, Lara suddenly stopped crying.


She was hugging me tightly by the shoulder and clinging to me like a cicada.

Did she sense that I was going to go somewhere?

If she cried because she didn't like that, then I'd feel a little moved but...

When we tried to pull her off, Lara screamed unhappily.

　離れないといっても、所詮は赤子の手。
　あっさりと引剥し、ロキシーへと戻す。

Even though I said that she wouldn't let me go, in the end it was the hand of a baby.

I easily pulled her off, and gave her back to Roxy.

　その瞬間、ララは断末魔のような泣き声を上げた。
　エリス並の大声。
　普段、こんなに声をあげないんだけど。
　なんか後ろめたいな。虐待している気分だ。

That moment, Lara cried loudly like she was about to die.

She was as loud as Eris.

Normally she wouldn't make such a loud voice though.

I feel kind of guilty, huh. It feels like we're abusing her or something.

「えっと、俺の留守の間も……」
「やあああぁぁぁぁ！　ばぁぁぁぁぁあ！　まああぁぁぁ！」

　やだ、ぱぱ、待って。
　そう聞こえてしまう。
　実に後ろ髪が引かれる。
　でも、俺は行かねばならんのだ。
　親友を助けるために、行かねばならんのだ。

"Umm, even when I'm gone..."

"DAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! BAAAAAAAHHHHH! WAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!"


'Don't, Papa, wait.'

When I glanced at her, Lara's face was messed up with tears, and she was making a dreadful expression whilst stretching out her arm towards me.

It's the first time I've seen Lara like this.

The rest of my family as well, were looking at Lara wondering what was going on.

「よしよし……本当にどうしたんでしょう。今までこんな事……リーリャさん、なにかわかりますか？」
「いえ、私もこのような事は……」

　ロキシーもなんとかしてなだめようとしているが、効果は無い。

　なんか、ちょっと不安になってきた。
　これ、なんか、異常じゃないか？
　俺、このまま行って大丈夫なんだろうか。
　ララは、聖獣レオに選ばれた救世主だ。
　何をどう救世するのかはわからないが、もしかすると、何か特殊な能力を持っているのかもしれない。
　未来予知とか。
　あるいは、これから死ぬ者がわかるとか。
　え……じゃあ俺、死ぬの？

I don't know how, or what she's going to save, but it could be that she has some special power.

　それは否応なく俺の心を不安に掻き立てた。

「わかりました、ララ」

　しかしそんな中、一人の人物が泣き叫ぶララを持ち上げた。
　自分の顔の高さに持ち上げて、目線を合わせて言った。

"I understand, Lara."


However, in the midst of that, a single person lifted up the crying Lara.

She lifted Lara up to her eye-level, and looking her in the eyes, spoke.

「わたしが一緒に行ってお父さんを守ります」

　太陽のようなそのお方は、そう言った。
　ただ一言、そう言った。

　ララはピタリと泣き止んだ。

That lady who was like the sun, spoke.


"I'll go with Otou-san, and protect him."


Just those few words.


Lara suddenly stopped her crying.

　ロキシーがついて来る。

　俺は止めた。
　今回は本気で危険だ。
　実はヒトガミの罠である可能性が高い。
　戦いになればロキシーは足手まといだ。
　ペルギウスの空中城塞には、魔族は入れない。
　ロキシーは教師になるのが夢だったはずだ、事前連絡もなしに数ヶ月も休めば、退職も免れないだろう。
　子供が泣いたぐらいであっさりやめてしまってもいいのか。

　と、やや強い口調を混じえつつ、あれこれとロキシーの同行を拒絶した。
　しかし、ロキシーは顔色一つ変えなかった。

Roxy was coming with me.


I had stopped her.

It would be really be dangerous this time.

The chance that it was really Hitogami's trap was high.

If it became a fight, then Roxy would get in the way.

Pelugius wouldn't let demons into his sky castle.

Roxy's dream was supposed to be becoming a teacher; if she suddenly stopped going for a few months without any notice, she probably couldn't avoid resigning.

Was it really okay for her to give up so easily just because our child cried?


Or so I had said one after another in a slightly strong tone, and said this and that to reject Roxy.

However, Roxy's expression didn't change at all.

「罠であるなら、ララが泣いたのも説明がつきますね」
「戦いでは足手まといでも、別の事で役に立てるでしょう？」
「頼んでも入れてもらえないようであれば、わたしだけ別ルートで向かいます」
「確かに教師は夢でしたが、夫の命と引き換えにするほどの夢ではありません」
「娘を泣き止ませるのも母親の役目でしょう」

　一つ一つの反論は即答で、俺はあっという間に論破され、言葉を失った。

　家族で俺に味方をしてくれる者はいなかった。
　決してロキシーが死んでもいいと思っているわけではないだろう。
　むしろ、ヒトガミの罠かもしれないという話を聞いて、「それか！」という顔をしていた。
　なんで隠してたんだと怒られた後、エリスは自分も行くと主張し、シルフィはエリスを抑えていたが、自分もついていくべきかと本気で口にしていた。

　誰もが、ララの尋常ではない様子に不安が芽生えていた。
　俺一人で行かせてもいいのか。
　本当に大丈夫なのか。
　今回のこれは、いわゆる虫の知らせではないのか。
　ルディの身に何かあるのではないか。

　不安に思う彼女たちをまとめたのは、ロキシーだった。
　彼女は、自分が代表で行くと主張した。
　その言葉で、シルフィとエリスは引っ込んだ。
　さすがロキシー、と褒めたいけど複雑だ。

　思う所は俺にもあった。
　俺は大事なものは大事にとっておきたいタイプだ。
　ロキシーという宝物は、できれば安全な宝箱の中にしまっておきたい。
　だが、ロキシーにも頑固な所はある。
　もしここで強引に同行を断っても、本人の言葉同様、別ルートでシーローン王国へと向かうだろう。

　それなら、ついてきてもらった方がいい。
　近くにいてくれた方が、俺も守りやすい。

　まあでも、俺だって今回は不安があった。
　ヒトガミの罠に対し、オルステッドの助けは無い。
　どうやればザノバを戻せるのかも考えついていない。
　先行きは暗く、不安だらけだ。

　そんな中、ロキシーが一緒に来てくれる。
　俺がこの世界で誰より尊敬している人がついてきてくれる。
　こんなに頼もしい事はない。

"If it's a trap, then it explains why Lara cried, doesn't it?"

"Though I'd get in your way during fights, I'd be helpful in other areas, right?"

"If even after we ask him, he doesn't let me, then I'll head there via a different route."

'As expected of Roxy' I want to say, but my feelings are complicated.


I had concerns as well.

I'm the type that likes to set aside the things I hold precious. [leave them somewhere safe/hoard]

For a treasure like Roxy, I'd want to shurt her in a safe treasure box if possible.

But, Roxy had her stubborn parts as well.

If I forcefully stopped her from coming along now, as she said herself, she would probably head to the Kingdom of Shirone on her own.


In that case, it'd be better to bring her along.

It'd be easier to protect her if she was near me.


But still, I'm anxious as well, this time.

Orsted's help won't come when it comes to Hitogami's trap.

I haven't come up with any ideas about returning Zanoba either.

The future is nothing but gloominess and anxiety.


In the midst of that, Roxy was coming along for me.

The person who I respected more than anyone else in this world would be coming with me.

There was nothing more hopeful[/promising/reliable] than this.

　翌日からシーローン行きの準備が始まった。
　旅の必需品については割愛しよう。


　まず、ザノバの装備からだ。
　俺ももちろんだが、ザノバも死なすわけにはいかない。
　という事で、事務所の武器庫からザノバ用の装備を幾つかピックアップしておいた。

　まず、自分ではまず着用しないと思っていた重い全身鎧。
　『火を無効化する』という効果が付いている魔力付与品(マジックアイテム)だ。
　火に弱いザノバにうってつけのアイテムだ。
　そう言うとザノバが特別に火に弱いように聞こえるが、人間はだいたい火に弱い。

　それから武器。
　オルステッド曰く、怪力の神子であるザノバの使用に耐えられる武器はない。
　どんな名剣でもザノバにかかれば、小枝のようなもので、数度使うだけで折れてしまう。
　という事で、俺はザノバ用に一本の棍棒を作ってやる事にした。
　俺の魔力でガチガチに固めた石の棍棒だ。

　デザインとしては、バットをそのままでかくしたような感じになる。
　重量は凄まじく、見た目に反して大の大人が一人では持ちあげられないほど。
　ザノバはつまむように持ち上げ、小枝のように扱うが、これでぶん殴ると大抵の相手は死ぬ。
　まさに鬼に金棒ってやつだ。

　ザノバは怪力の割りに虚弱というか、足が遅いため、それ用の補助装備も用意した。
　それが、魔力付与品(マジックアイテム)『乱獲の投網』である。
　どういう原理かしらないが、この網は投擲した瞬間から意思を持ったように相手を自動追尾し、絡めとる。
　ザノバの怪力を持ってすれば、相手は一瞬にして地に引きずり倒され、ザノバの拳の届く範囲まで引っ張り込まれることになるだろう。

　ザノバには、ひとまずこの３つで戦ってもらう。
　全身鎧の造形が気に食わない事以外は、ザノバも満足してくれた。


　ロキシー用の装備も、いくつか用意しておく。
　当然ながら、彼女に死なれてもらっても困る。
　防具関連はキッチリとしたものがいいだろう。
　といっても、ロキシーは非力であるため、ザノバのようにガッシリとした鎧をつけるわけにもいかない。
　戦闘経験豊富な彼女に、使い慣れていない装備を渡すのは、逆に危ない。
　ひとまず、発動すると物理攻撃に対する結界のようなものを張る指輪と、致命傷を受けると一度だけ身代わりになってくれるという首輪を渡しておいた。
　杖やローブに関してはそのままだ。

　ロキシーの装備はそれだけか。
　不安は残る。
　だが、俺が頑張って守ればいいだけの話だ。
　どんな罠が用意してあるかはわからないが、それだけの修行はしてきたはずだ。


　学校に関してだが、ザノバは退学、ロキシーは休職という形にした。
　ロキシーがクビになるのはよろしくないという事で、まずはザノバに一筆書いてもらい、シーローンの宮廷魔術師として連れ帰る、という形にした。
　学校側は抗議した。
　校長とザノバはテーブル一つを挟んでの対談となった。
　それほど、ロキシーは学校にとって得難い存在であるらしい。
　当然だな。
　俺が校長でもそうする。

The next day we began the preparations for going to Shirone.

We would sparingly pack only what we needed.


First of all was Zanoba's gear.

I obvious that I didn't want to either, but I couldn't let Zanoba die.

And so, I picked up a few pieces of equipment for Zanoba to use from the armoury in my office.


First I picked up some heavy full-body armour that I didn't use myself.

It was a magic item that had a 『Nullifies Fire』 effect.

It was an item ideal for Zanoba who was weak against fire.

When I put it like that, it might sound like Zanoba was especially weak to fire, but people are generally weak against fire.


After that were the weapons.

According to Orsted, there were any weapons that could withstand use by a super-strength miko like Zanoba.

No matter how famous of a sword it was, Zanoba would break it several times during use, like a twig.

Because of that, I created a cudgel for Zanoba to use.

It was a hardened stone cudgel made from my mana.


It's design was like a baseball bat.

Contrary to appearances it's weight was tremendous, and it was heavy enough that a grown man couldn't lift it by himself.

When Zanboa picked it up, he just treated it like a twig, but most people would die if they got hit by it.

It was truly like giving a metal club to an oni.※

[※Dornote: is an idiom that means 'making someone strong even stronger', but well, better not to translate, since it really is giving an oni a club.]


In contrast to his superhuman strength, Zanoba had feeble defences you could say, and because he ran slowly, I prepared equipment to help with that as well.

It was a magic item named 『Net of Overfishing』.

I don't know how it works, but the moment you threw the net, it'd automatically chase after the enemy as you willed it, and caught them.

With Zanoba's super-strength, the enemy could probably be pulled to the ground in an instant, and dragged to somewhere Zanoba could reach.


For now, we had Zanoba fight with these three items.

Aside from the fact that Zanoba couldn't stand the way the full-body armour was made, he was satisfied.


I prepared a few things for Roxy to use as well.

It goes without saying, but I'd be troubled if I let her die either.

It'd probably be good if Roxy wore some sort of armour.

Though I say that, because Roxy was weak, there was no way she could wear sturdy armour like Zanoba's.

Since she was a veteran in battle, if I gave her some equipment that she wasn't used to, on the contrary it would become more dangerous.

First I gave her a ring that could create something like a physical barrier upon invocation, and bear your fatal wounds just once.

Her staff and robe I left as is.


Is that all Roxy's equipment?

I'm still anxious.

But, that just means that I just have to try my best to protect her.

I don't know what kind of trap will be used, but I should have trained enough to do at least that much.


As for school, Zanoba dropped out, and Roxy quit temporarily.

Because it wouldn't be good if Roxy was fired, first Zanoba dropped a few lines about bringing her back to Shirone as a court magician.

The school objected.

It seems that Roxy was that hard-earned to the school.

Naturally, right?

Were I the principal, I'd do the same.

「ロキシー殿は元々シーローンの宮廷魔術師だ。前回は少々トラブルがあって宮廷魔術師をやめたが、実力も十分であるし、改めてシーローン王国の宮廷魔術師として迎えようと思っておる」

　なんて居丈高に言うザノバに対し、ロキシーの方から「宮廷魔術師になんてなりたくないんですがねー」と遠回しに抗議。
　校長はロキシーに乗っかり「ロキシーの身柄は我が魔法大学にある」と主張。
　小一時間ほどの話し合いの末、ザノバは折れた。
　一応、今回の一件はロキシーも関係あるため連れて行く。
　だが、用事が済み次第大学に返還する……という形となった。
　最初に無理な要求を突きつけてから妥協する。
　よくある交渉術だな。

　これで、帰ってきてからも教師を続けられるだろう。


　それから、俺の装備を確保する。
　俺の装備といっても、基本的には変わらない。
　魔導鎧『一式』、『二式改』とガトリング砲だけだ。

　ここ最近、相棒(アクア・ハーティア)も使わなくなって久しい。
　エリスに悪いと思うが、彼女も「もっといいものがあるならそっちを使えばいいじゃない」との事だ。
　もっと思い出を大切にして欲しい。
　俺たちの十歳の思い出だというのに……過去は振り返らないという事なのだろうか。
　俺は未だに、当時の彼女の胸の感触を覚えているんだが……。

　ひとまず相棒(アクア・ハーティア)は大切に俺の部屋に飾ってある。
　シルフィあたりに譲った方がいいだろうか。
　エリスとは逆に、シルフィは俺がプレゼントした杖を使い続けている。
　相棒(アクア・ハーティア)もプレゼントすれば、喜んで使ってくれるのではなかろうか。
　いやでも、女からのプレゼントを他の女に上げるってのはどうなんだろう。
　シルフィが使ってるのはロキシーからもらったものだけどさ。

　ともあれ、俺はいつも通り、小型の魔導鎧『二式改』で戦っていく事になる。強敵が現れた時だけ、大型の魔導鎧『一式』を持ち出す。
　大丈夫、例え強敵が出てきても、この時のために訓練してきたのだ。
　やれるとも。

　大型の魔導鎧『一式』は、バラして持って行き、向こうでもう一度組み立てなおす形にした。
　ヒトガミは『魔導鎧』があることを知っているし、対処されないためにも、隠しておく形が望ましいだろう。
『二式改』と違って、着っぱなしってわけにもいかないしな。巨大ロボを乗ってない時に破壊するのはセオリーだ。

　装備は整った。
　あとは移動手段だけ。
　というわけで、俺はザノバと共にペルギウスに頭を下げにいった。

"To begin with, Roxy-dono was Shirone's court magician. Though last time there was a bit of trouble and she quite, she has plenty enough ability, and we were thinking of welcoming her again as the court magician."

To Zanoba who said such high-handed lines, Roxy said "But I don't really wish to become a court magician, you see." and rejected him in a roundabout way.

Instigated by Roxy, the principal declared "Roxy is a member of we, the Magic University."

After talking for close to an hour, the result was that Zanoba folded.

As far as things went, since Roxy was an involved party this time, she'd be going along.

But, as soon as she finished her business, she'd be returning to the university... Is what was decided.

It was coming to a comprimise after demanding something unreasonable.

It's an oft-used negotiation technique.


With this, Roxy should be able to continue teaching even after she comes back.


After that, I prepared my own equipment.

Though I say 'my own equipment' it's basically the same as usual.

It was just the Magic Armour Mk. Ⅰ and Gattling Gun Mk. ⅠⅠ.


As of recently, I haven't used my partner(Aqua Heartia) for a while now.

I feel sorry to Eris, but she too said, "If you have something better, wouldn't it be fine if you used that?".

I wish she would cherish her memories more.

Though they're our memories from when I was 10... Is it a matter of not looking back?

Even now, I can still remember how her chest felt back in those days, but...


For now, I'd leave my partner(Aqua Heartia) in my room as decoration.

Would it be better to let Sylphy use it?

Contrary to Eris, Sylphy was still using the wand I gave her as a present.

If I gave her my partner(Aqua Heartia) as a present as well, would she happily use it?

No, but how is giving a present I received from one woman to another?

What Sylphy is using is that Roxy gave me though.


Anyway, I'll be battling with the small-type Magic Armour Mk. ⅠⅠ. If it comes to a time when a strong enemy appears, I'll bring out the large-type Magic Armour Mk. Ⅰ.

It'll be alright. Even if a strong enemy appears, that's what I've been training for.

I can definitely do it.


I've decided to bring the large-type Magic Armour Mk. Ⅰ with me in parts, and reassemble it when I get there.

Hitogami knows about the 『Magic Armour』 after all, so it'd probably be better if I hid it.

After all, unlike the Mk. ⅠⅠ, there's no way I can just leave it on.

It's a theory that when you don't pilot the giant robot, it'll be destroyed. [Dornote: Sorry, I have no idea.]


My equipment was in order.

All that was left was the means of getting there.

And so, Zanoba and I went to bow to Pelugius together.

　空中城塞に行くと、何やら高価そうな部屋に通された。
　一度も入ったことがない部屋だ。

　趣味部屋という感じだろうか。
　壁には絵画が並べられ、棚には手のひらサイズの像も置いてある。
　飾ってあるものは、空中城塞の他の展示品と比べて、どれも一味違う感じだ。

　廊下においてある作品は「高価そうだ」が、
　ここにおいてある作品は「出来がいい」あるいは「趣味がいい」。
　完成度と値段は相反しないという事だろう。

When we went to the Sky Castle, we passed through an expensive looking room for some reason.

It was a room that we'd never been to before.


Should I say that it was like a hobby room?

The walls were lined with paintings, and the shelves were lined with palm-sized statues as well.

Compared to the decorations in the rest of the Sky Castle, the things in this room were all a little different.


The things in the hallway were "expensive looking" but,

the things left here were "well-crafted" or "a good hobby".

You could probably say it was a case of the perfect quality being contrary to its price.

「いいな、ここ」
「おや、師匠は初めてでしたかな？」

　思わずつぶやくと、ザノバが意外そうに言った。

"Nice place, huh?"

"Oh? Shishou, could this be your first time?"


When I unconsciously muttered this, Zanoba said something beyond my expectations.

「ああ、普段は客室か、庭園だしな……」
「ここは、ペルギウス様が認めた方しか入れない場所です」

　入り口に立つシルヴァリルにピシャリと言われた。
　まるで、お前は認められてないんだぜ、と言わんばかりの口調だ。
　最近思うんだが、この人、俺のことあんまり好きじゃないんだと思う。
　正確には、俺のバックにいるオルステッドが。
「シルヴァリル殿。まるで師匠が余よりも格下であるような言い方はやめていただけませぬか？」

　ザノバはその言葉に、振り返る事なく文句を言った。
　相手の方ぐらいむけよ。

"Yeah, normally I'd wait at the guest room, or in the garden you see..."

"This is a place that only the people Pelugius-sama has acknowledged are allowed to enter."


Said Sylvaril rather flatly, as she stood by the door.

It was a tone that was almost telling me 'he hasn't acknowledged you, yanno'.

I've been thinking this recently but, this woman really doesn't like me all that much.

Though more accurately, it was that she didn't like Orsted who was my backer.


"Sylvaril-dono. Could you please stop talking as though Shishou is ranked below me?"


Zanoba complained about her words without even turning around.

At least look at people when you speak.


「しかし、ペルギウス様がお認めになり、この部屋に案内を命じられたのは、ザノバ様だけです。本日はなぜか二人ともお連れするようにと言われましたが……」

　シルヴァリルの冷静な言葉にザノバが幽鬼のように振り返った。

"However, the only one that Pelugius-sama has acknowledged and ordered me to guide into this room is you, Zanoba-sama. Today, for some reason I was told to bring the both of you here, but..."


Hearing Sylvaril's calm words, like a revenant, Zanoba turned around to look at her.

「確かに師匠はペルギウス様と会った時には、すでに人形を作ることをほとんどしなくなっておられましたから、そう思われるのも無理はない。しかしながら、師匠の作品は、余が持つ知識とは比べ物にならぬほど深く、そして素晴らしいものなのです」
「ですがペルギウス様は……」
「ルーデウス・グレイラットは余の師匠です。
　確かに余やペルギウス様よりも知識は少ないやもしれませぬ。
　しかし、師匠の言葉なくして、ペルギウス様に認めるザノバ・シーローンはいなかったでしょう」
「……」

　シルヴァリルは黙った。
やや面白くなさそうな顔をしていたのだと思う。
　仮面でわからないけど。
　俺もザノバによいしょされるのは慣れてるけど、今のはちょっとジンときた。
　俺はちょっと異世界のフィギュアの知識を持ってるってだけだから、そんなにすごくはないんだと謙遜したい。

"Certainly, by the time Shishou met with Pelugius-sama, Shishou had already almost completely stopped creating dolls, so it couldn't be helped. Even so, Shishou's creations are so deep that my knowledge can't even hold up to them, and moreover they're wonderful creations."

"However, Pelugius-sama..."

"Rudeus Greyrat is my shishou. Certainly he may be less knowledgable in art than Pelugius-sama or I. However, it's likely that were it not for Shishou's words, the Zanoba Shirone who Pelugius-sama acknowledged would not have existed."

Sylvaril was silent.

She seemed to be making a slightly unhappy expression. [Dornote: 'seemed' because she wears a bird mask. Rudeus is speculating.]

Though I'm already used to Zanoba's praises, just now I was a little moved.

I just know a little about figures from a different word, so I really want to tell him that I'm nothing that amazing.

「わかりました。申し訳ありません、ザノバ様」
「よいのです、シルヴァリル殿」

　シルヴァリルが頭を下げ、ザノバは快く許した。
　俺は別に、どんな態度を取られてもいいんだけどな。

"I understand. Please excuse my earlier actions, Zanoba-sama."

"Very good, Sylvaril-dono."


Sylvaril bowed, and Zanoba happily forgave her.

I don't really know how I should behave though.

「ザノバよ、よく来たな」

　と、そこで奥の扉が開いた。
　ペルギウスだ。
　彼は部屋の空気を察したのか、シルヴァリルとザノバを交互に見た。

"Zanoba. You've come."


At that moment, the door further in opened.

It was Pelugius.

Perhaps he might have sensed the mood in the room, but he looked back and forth between Sylvaril and Zanoba.

「……どうした、シルヴァリルが何か粗相でもしたか？」
「いえ、師匠がこの部屋に来た事が無いというので、その事について話していただけですな」

　ザノバはと笑って答えた。
　主人に告げ口をしないあたり、こいつも出来た男である。

"...What's the matter? Has Sylvaril made a mistake or the like?"

"No, Shishou hadn't come to this room before, so I was just inquiring about that."


Zanoba replied with a smile.

To not tattle to the master, Zanoba is also quite the man.

「ルーデウスか……確かに、今まで機会がなかったな。どうだ、我の自慢の部屋は」
「素晴らしいですね。どの作品も廊下においてあるものに比べ、作風に『品』と『味』があるように思えます」
「ほう」

　具体的にどこがいいのかわからんので、曖昧な言葉になったが、ペルギウスは上機嫌になった。

"Rudeus, huh...? Certainly we haven't had the chance. How is it, this prided room of mine?"

"It's quite splendid. Compared to the works in the hall, everything here seems to be created with 『elegance』 and 『taste』 in mind."

"Hohh." [Dornote: Usually would translate ほう as "Oh?", but I suspect the tone isn't questioning this time, but more declarative, like "I see [but you shant know exactly what it is I see]."]


Since I basically don't know just what was good I gave some vague words, but Pelugius' mood picked up.

「外の物を一般的な意味での一級品とすると、ここにあるものはペルギウス様好みの特級品と見受けられますが、いかがでしょうか」
「正解だ」

　ペルギウスは嬉しそうに口元を歪め、椅子へと座った。
　当たっていたらしい。
　俺の目利きも捨てたもんじゃないな。
　ほら、シルヴァリルも驚いた顔をしている……気がする。
　仮面でわかんないけど。

　ともあれ、俺とザノバはペルギウスに促されるまま、席についた。
　三者面談の形となる。

"If you refer to the things outside as your run of the mill, high class items, then the works in this room could be seen to be special grade items that you've taken a liking to, Pelugius-sama, but... Was I wrong?"

Pelugius' mouth curved happily, and he sat on a chair.

　対するザノバは嬉しそうに笑って言った。

"Now then, what business do you have today? Have you brought another interesting doll to show?"

Pelugius asked in good humour.

In response, Zanoba spoke with a happy looking smile.

「いいえ、ペルギウス様、本日は故郷に戻る事になりまして、お別れを言いに参りました」
「ふむ……」

　ペルギウスは訝しげに眉を潜めた。
　ザノバの顔をまじまじと見る。
　そして、次第に不機嫌そうな顔になっていく。
　ザノバはその間にも、シーローン王国から召集を受けた経緯をつらつらと説明している。
　ペルギウスは相槌すら打たず、じっと、ザノバの顔を見続けている。

　やがて、ザノバの説明が終わった。
　ペルギウスが口を開いたのは、少しの沈黙の後だった。

"No, today it's been decided that I'll be returning to my homeland, so I've come to express my thanks, Pelugius-sama."

"Hmm..."


Pelugius frowned in doubt.

He stared carefully at Zanoba's face.

He then gradually started to look unhappy.

During that time, Zanoba explained the circumstances about him being summoned to the Kingdom of Shirone.

Despite us having not mentioned anything about that, Pelugius said those words.

Zanoba stared back at Pelugius blankly.

「なぜそう言い切れますか？」
「顔を見ればわかる。我は今の貴様のような顔をした男を、何人も見てきたからな」

　ペルギウスは不機嫌そうにそう言った。
　顔を見てどうと決め付けるのはどうかと思うが、ペルギウスが止めてくれるなら俺も乗っかりたい。
　ザノバがシーローン王国に行かないでいてくれるのが一番だからな。
　そうすりゃ、俺もヒトガミの罠に飛び込まなくていい。

"Why do you assert that?"

"I can tell from your face. I've seen men with your face many times in the past, after all."


Pelugius spoke unhappily.

I'm sceptical about arbitrarily deciding that just by looking at someone's face, but if Pelugius is going to stop Zanoba, then I'd like to get on board as well.

After all, it'd be best if Zanoba didn't go to the Kingdom of Shirone at all.

Like that, it'd be fine even if I didn't leap headfirst into Hitogami's trap.

「本当にそうだとして、いかがなさるおつもりかな？」

　ザノバはポーカーフェイスを崩さず、ペルギウスはニヤリと笑った。

"If that really is the case, what would you plan to do, Pelugius-sama?"


Zanoba didn't lose his pokerface, and spoke to Pelugius with a broad smile.

「誰かと戦うのであれば、力がほしくば貸してやろう。
　貴様と芸術について語り合う時間は我にとって貴重だ。
　もし邪魔な者がいるのであれば、我が消してやろうではないか。
例えばそう……偽王とか」
「必要ありませぬ」
「ハッ、だろうな」

　ペルギウスはふと視線を巡らせ、俺の方を向いた。
　俺も何か言うべきだろうか。
　そういうアイコンタクトだろうか。
　と思ったが、ペルギウスは俺を無視してザノバとの会話を続けた。

"If you're going to fight someone, then I shall lend you power if you desire it. The times when I speak to you about art are important to me. If there's someone that will get in the way with that, shant I erase them? Right... A false king, for example."

"There is no need."

"Hah. Right?"


Pelugius suddenly changed his sight, and looked towards me.

Or so I was thinking, when Pelugius ignored me and continued conversing with Zanoba.

「ザノバ……貴様が死ぬのを、この男は了承したのか？」
「いえ、ただ、ついてくると――」
「ほう、貴様はそれを断らなかったわけか」
「師匠がその気になれば、余をシーローン王国に行かせない事も可能でしょうからな」

　俺が行くといった時、ザノバは強く反対しなかった。
　反対しても言っても無駄だと思われたらしい。
　まあ、確かに無駄だけど。

"Zanoba... Is this man fine with your death?"

"No, he's just accompanying me and――"

"Oh? And you didn't oppose this?"

"If Shishou felt like it, it's possible that might even stop me from going to the Kingdom of Shirone, after all."


When I said I would be coming too, Zanoba didn't strongly oppose me.

Zanoba laughed cheerfully.

It was a forced laugh though.

「師匠は子も生まれ、やらねばならぬ事のある身。
　いざという時には、きちんと自分の身を優先してくださるでしょう」
「お前は、目の前で窮地に陥った仲間を庇えん程度の男の弟子なのか？」
「まさか！　ですが師匠はすごいお方ですからな。
　余をかばいつつ、自分も生き残ってくれるに違いありません！」

　俺はそんな超人じゃねえ。
　まあ、ザノバが本気で俺を超人と思ってるかはさておき。
　ザノバはペルギウスの言葉を軽く受け流している。
　シーローン王国に行かないという選択肢は、こいつの中には無いのだ。

　ペルギウスも、それがわかったらしい。
　急速に興味を失ったように、頬杖をつき、つまらなさそうにため息をついた。

"Shishou is even having a child, and is a person that has things they must do. When it comes down to it, I'm sure that he will prioritise his own safety."

"You're the disciple of a man who won't protect the companions in front of his eyes when they're in trouble?"

"Never! But Shishou is an amazing person, you see. There's no mistaking that he'll cover me whilst protecting his own life as well."


I'm not such a superman.

Well, let's leave aside whether or not Zanoba actually thinks of me as one.

Zanoba was light-heartedly warding away Pelugius' words.

In Zanoba's heart, the option of not going to the Kingdom of Shirone didn't exist.


It seems that Pelugius understood this as well.

As though he was quickly losing interest, Pelugius sighed boringly, his hand to his chin.

「それで、ただ別れを言いに来たのではあるまい。何か願いがあるのではないか？」

　ザノバは頷いて答えた。

「シーローン王国への転移魔法陣と、それと魔導鎧の持ち込みの許可……そして、師匠の妻である魔族ロキシー・ミグルディアがこの城を通行する事の許可を」
「転移魔法陣は用意してやる。魔導鎧の持ち込みも許可する……だが、魔族をこの城に入れることは許さん」

　ペルギウスは、顔をしかめつつ、言った。
　アルマンフィは以前、ロキシーを門前払いにした。
　ペルギウスは、この城に魔族を入れたくないのだ。

"And so, you didn't come here just to say goodbye. You have some other request, do you not?"


Zanoba nodded, and replied.


"The use of your Transfer Magic Arrays/Circles to Shirone, and permission to bring the Magic Armour... As well as permission for Shishou's wife, the demon Roxy Migurdia, to pass through this castle."

"I'll prepare the Transfer Magic Array/Circle. I'll give you permission to bring the Magic Armour as well... But those of the Demon Race are not permitted to enter this castle."


Pelugius spoke with a frown.

In the past, Arlmanfi turned Roxy away.

Pelugius didn't want demons to enter this castle.

「このザノバ・シーローンの後生の頼みであっても、ですかな？」
「ザノバ・シーローン。『この』とはいうが、貴様が我にとっていかほどの者だというのだ」
「同じ物差しで芸術を語り合える、得難き友だと」
「この甲龍王ペルギウス・ドーラと、貴様のごとき小国の王子が、友だと申すか」
「僭越ながら。モノを見る目に、身分の差も種族の違いも関係ありませぬ」

　ペルギウスがザノバを睨んだ。
　ザノバは物怖じすることなく、ペルギウスを見返した。
　シルヴァリルの強い視線もザノバに注がれている。
　俺の視線だけが泳いでいる。

　緊迫した空気。
　俺だったら謝ったり、ごまかしたりしてしまいそうなしまいそうだ。

"Even if it is I, Zanoba Shirone, that asks you this as a favour of a lifetime?" [Dornote: it's not literally "favour of a lifetime" (that'd be 後世の頼み if I'm not mistaken), but it seems that recently people have been using it this way.]

"Zanoba Shirone. Though you say 『Even if it is I』, just what are you to me anyway?"

"A rare friend who you can conversations about art with."

"Are you saying that I, the Armoured Dragon King Pelugius Dola, am friends with the prince of a small country like you?"

"Though it is presumptuous of me, yes. When it comes to having good taste, neither difference in social status, nor difference in race matter."


Pelugius glared at Zanoba.

Zanoba looked back at Pelugius without any fear.

Sylvaril also turned a strong gaze towards Zanoba.

Only I looked about in worry.


It was a tense atmosphere.

Were it me, I'd probably apologise and try to gloss over it.

「ハッ」

　ペルギウスは顎を上げて、笑い声を出した。

"Hah."


Pelugius raised his chin and let out a laugh.

「いいだろう、魔族の通行を許可する」
「ご配慮、感謝いたします」
「ただし、いくつか条件を付けさせてもらう」

　その後、ペルギウスはいくつかの条件を提示した。
　ロキシーが城内で口を開くことを禁止したり、城内にあるものに触れる事を禁止したり、自分と会う事を禁止したり……。
　基本的に通行するだけなら問題のない範疇だったので、了承しておいた。

"Very well. I'll allow the demon pass to the castle." [Dornote for English second language speakers: pass (plural passes). Permission or license to pass, or to go and come.]

"I am truly grateful for your consideration."

"However, it comes with a number of conditions."


After that, Pelugius stated a number of conditions.

While in the castle, Roxy was forbidden to speak, touch anything in the castle, meet him...

Essentially, as long as she did nothing except pass through here, there would be no problems.

「ではシルヴァリル、魔法陣を用意してやれ」
「ははっ！」

　ペルギウスはシルヴァリルに指示を出した後。
　最後にザノバをつまらなさそうな目で見た。

"Well then, Sylvaril. Prepare the Magic Arrays."

"Yes sir!" [Dornote: I'm pretty sure in one of the learner translations, someoen translated "ははっ！" as Hahaha. This needs to be fixed, lol.]


After Pelugius gave orders to Sylvaril, he looked at Zanoba boredly.

It was a cold gaze, but some kind of surrender was mixed into it.

「ザノバ・シーローン」
「はい」
「残念だ」

　ペルギウスとザノバは同時に立ち上がった。
　踵を返すペルギウスに、ザノバは無言で礼をした。
　ペルギウスの背中がやけに寂しそうに見えたのは、気のせいではないだろう。

"Zanoba Shirone."

"Yes."

"This is a shame."


At the same time, Pelugius stood up.

To the retreating Pelugius, Zanoba wordlessly bowed.

That Pelugius' retreating figure looked extremely lonely, was probably just my imagination.

　魔導鎧はバラバラにした後、魔法陣を通してシーローン王国内へ運んだ。
　その後、ジンジャーの知り合いである木こりギルドの者の手により石材に偽装され、首都近くの倉庫まで運搬される手はずだ。
　俺はそこまではついていかない。
　だが、ジンジャーには先行してもらい、シーローン王国の様子を探ってもらった。
　もし、北からの軍勢が攻めてくるってのがガセであれば、ザノバを説得する口実にもなる。
　そう思ったが、どうやら北のビスタ王国が侵攻する気配を匂わせているのは、本当の事らしい。
　国中が戦争ムードで、傭兵やならず者が大量にいたそうだ。

After disassembling the Magic Armour, we moved it to the Kingdom of Shirone via the magic arrays.

　となれば、それがヒトガミの罠である可能性もある。

"King Pax has 10 skilled KDK knights under his control, and is using them to massacre those who oppose him."


10 skilled knights from the KDK huh?

Just 10 people.

It doesn't seem that Pax and the 10 had waged the coup by themselves, but there's no mistaking that it was thanks to the efforts of those 10 that the coup was a success.


Meaning that there's a chance that Hitogami has laid a trap.

「ジンジャーさん、その10人の騎士、名前とかわかりますか？」
「いえ、残念ながらそこまでは……ただ、最近は常に、パックス王の傍に骸骨のような顔をした男が控えているという噂はありました。それが七大列強の『死神』であるという噂も」
「そうですか」

　うげ、七大列強かよ……。
　まあ、さすがに王竜王国もパックスごときに七大列強を貸し出したりはしないだろうから別人だろうけど、一応、その事はオルステッドに伝えておこうか。
　骸骨のような顔をした男、と。

"Ginger-san, do you know the names of the 10 knights?"

"No, unfortunately I don't know that much, but... there was just a rumour about a man with a skeleton face always being by King Pax's side."

"I see."


Ugeh, don't tell me it's one fo the 7 Great Powers.

Well, as expected even the KDK wouldn't loan Pax one of the 7 Great Powers, but for now it might be best to relay this to ORsted.

That there's a man with a face like a skeleton.

「ふむ、北の侵攻があるのであれば、急ぐ必要がありますな」

　それを聞いて、ザノバは早く行きたくてしょうがなくなってしまったようだ。
　すぐにでも出発すると言い出した。
　口調はいつも通りだが、焦っているようにも感じる。

　止める口実もなく、数日後には出発という形になった。

　メンバーは、俺とザノバとジンジャーとロキシーの４人だ。
　ジュリはうちに預けて行く形になる。

"Hmm, if there's an ivnasion from the north, then there's a need to make haste, is there not?"


Hearing that, it seems that Zanoba felt that we had no choice but to hurry it up.

He suggested that we immediately depart.

His tone was as usual, but I could feel his impatience.


I had no reason to stop him either, so we decided to depart in a few days.


The members were 4 people; Zanoba, Ginger, Roxy and I.
