  1. Hope, have you ever been to the fair?
  2. >Hope gives you a puzzled look.
  3. >"Fair? What's that?"
  4. Every year, Equestria holds an annual event. This is known as the Equestrian Fair. It runs all through the whole month.
  5. >Your daughter looks speechless.
  6. >As in what?
  7. >Lyra butts in.
  8. >"Maybe your dad can explain in a more simpler way."
  9. Er... it's when you walk around and enjoy everything, from food, games, and rides.
  10. >"Wow! Will it be that fun!?
  11. I guarantee it.
  12. >Hope is ecstatic.
  13. >Perhaps a little too ecstatic.
  14. >Now she's restless.
  15. >And she's very eager to learn more.
  16. >"Dad? Can I ask you a question?"
  17. >You look at the clock.
  18. >12 A.M.
  19. It's midnight, Hope. What is it?
  20. >Hope crawls into the bed.
  21. >She's between you and Lyra.
  22. >"What kind of food is there?"
  23. Tons. What would yo--
  24. >"And the games? Are they fun?"
  25. Yes, they'r--
  26. >"What kind of rides are there? I bet... there's... so... many..."
  27. >Hope's voice fades.
  28. >Her eyes become heavy.
  29. >And then silence.
  30. >You sigh, but a small smile appears on your face.
  31. >The excitement is infectious, for you are enthusiastic to spend the day with your family.
  32. >It doesn't take long before you fall asleep.
  33.
  34. >The Fair!
  35. >Here you are with Hope and Lyra.
  36. >You overslept a little, but there's the whole day to enjoy.
  37. >Hope's eyes are wide with anticipation.
  38. >"This place is huge!"
  39. Hope! Stick close to us!
  40. >Your daughter rushes back to your side.
  41. Don't run off like that. If you get lost, we won't see each other anymore.
  42. >Hope grabs your hand and grips it tightly.
  43. >You wince.
  44. >"Then I'll stay by you and mom forever!"
  45. >You chuckle.
  46. Just stay by us, Hope. If something interests you, just tell us, so we can keep watch.
  47. >"OK!"
  48. >Hope releases her strong firm but still remains close.
  49. Anyway, Lyra, do you remember where the pig races are?
  50. >Lyra pulls the map out with her magic.
  51. >"You don't remember?"
  52. Vaguely.
  53. >"It's right here."
  54. >Lyra points her hoof to the spot on the map.
  55. >It says Pig Races.
  56. Oh, I guess we just need to head northeast. Let's go!
  57. >Lyra shakes her head and closes the map.
  58. >She knows you're being daft.
  59. >It doesn't take more than 10 minutes to reach your destination.
  60.
  61. >The Pig Races!
  62. >A large crowd is gathered here.
  63. >Everyone is excited.
  64. >Your daughter, on the other hand, feels lost.
  65. >"Dad? What's going on?"
  66. Just watch, Hope. You'll love it.
  67. >A middle-aged stallion appears from behind the track fence and approaches the center area.
  68. >He looks passionate as if he had done this a thousand times.
  69. >"Welcome! Welcome everypony to this year's Equestrian fair! If this is your first time, then you're in for a real treat!"
  70. >You've heard the announcer's speech before.
  71. >Hope looks intrigued.
  72. >"Before we begin, how about a little song? Some of you may know the lyrics, so sing along if you want! Just remember to stomp your hooves to the beat."
  73. >The lyrics are completely unfamiliar to you.
  74. >Instead, you stomp your feet while Hope and Lyra stomp their hooves.
  75. >It feels a little awkward.
  76. >The music fades.
  77. >"Well now, are you ready?"
  78. >Everyone shouts.
  79. >"Alright! The group to my right shall be gate #1! The pig, wearing the red, represents love. Cheer for Princess Swinedance!"
  80. >The red group cheers.
  81. >And next to the red section is the orange group. Running out of gate #2, we have the stunning royal figure, Princess Piggylestia!"
  82. >Cheers are heard again.
  83. >"And in front of me is the blue group. Out of gate #3 is the beauty of the night, Princess Sowna!"
  84. >Again, more cheers.
  85. >"And finally..."
  86. >You and your family are in this group.
  87. >"Coming out of gate #4, wearing the green, we have a very special pig. Give it up for King Boarba!"
  88. >Everyone, in a playful manner, is surprised.
  89. >"Ooooo..."
  90. That's right!
  91. >Your pig is here to win.
  92. >"Get ready to cheer them on! Here we go!"
  93. >The bell rings.
  94. >The gates open.
  95. >And the pigs run.
  96. >Each crowd roots for their respective colored pig.
  97. >Boarba makes a cunning start.
  98. >Trailed by Piggylestia and Sowna.
  99. >Swinedance is dead last.
  100. >At the curve, Boarba speeds up.
  101. >Piggylestia and Sowna are battling for second.
  102. >Swinedance is too far behind.
  103. >In the end, the clear winner is Boarba with Sowna in second place.
  104. >During that whole time, Hope shouted at the top of her lungs.
  105. >She's loving every moment.
  106. >But the fun doesn't stop.
  107. >The next race is the duck race.
  108. >Hope looks at you.
  109. >"Ducks?"
  110. It's not limited to only pigs.
  111. >The announcer proceeds to introduce the ducks.
  112. >This time the names are puns of the Wonderbolts.
  113. >Hope giggles at them.
  114. >"Oinkfire!"
  115. >You wonder who came up with these silly names.
  116. >And now for the race.
  117. >Once the bell rings, the gates open.
  118. >The ducks waddle their way forward.
  119. >However, as they reach the middle, all four ducks turn around and shuffle their way back to the start.
  120. >You burst out laughing.
  121. >Hope is trying to egg them on.
  122. >Lyra sits quietly, trying her hardest not to laugh.
  123. >Eventually, the ducks make it to the end.
  124. >The green group's duck, Pigin, is the winner.
  125. >You're uncertain whether or not to consider that a victory.
  126. >Regardless, it was entertaining.
  127. >"And now folks, we have the final race! These pigs are from a faraway land, and we are honored to see them run. Let's welcome the pot-belly pigs!"
  128. >Hope wishes to question you, but judging by the confused look on your face, she holds back.
  129. >The pig puns are now famous celebrities.
  130. >The bell rings for the final time.
  131. >Hope looks astonished.
  132. >"Whoa! They're huge!"
  133. >The pot-belly pigs are indeed massive.
  134. >They slowly run, bumping into one another.
  135. >The pig wearing the orange makes it to the goal.
  136. >"And orange is the winner! Thank you all for coming down to the pig races! Continue to enjoy your stay at the Equestrian Fair!"
  137. >It feels like a disappointing end, but Hope enjoyed herself.
  138. >That's all that matters.
  139.
  140. >The Farm!
  141. >Next to the pig races is the farm.
  142. >Many animals are kept inside fences.
  143. >"WHOA!"
  144. >Hope runs to the railing.
  145. >"Look at that pig! It's way larger than the ones from the race!"
  146. >You crack a smile.
  147. Its had a good life.
  148. >"It's laying around, too. Just like you, Dad."
  149. Huh?
  150. >"Ha ha! See! You do the same while you're napping!"
  151. I don't think I d--
  152. >"Wow! She's right!"
  153. >Lyra cuts you off.
  154. >"So much resemblance! It's definitely like your Dad!"
  155. Ugh.
  156. >Hope and Lyra are tag teaming.
  157. >There's only one thing to do.
  158. >Escape!
  159. >Unfortunately, the two follow behind.
  160. >"Hehe! Dad, we're just joking!"
  161. >Suddenly, something catches Hope's eye.
  162. >She rushes off to the next enclosure, forgetting about teasing you.
  163. >Lyra speaks to you.
  164. >"Hope loves the way you sleep. She'll cuddle against you occasionally."
  165. I know. She always scurries away when I wake up though.
  166. >"Mmm."
  167. What about you? What do you do?
  168. >"Uh..."
  169. >You look at Lyra.
  170. >Her eyes avoid contact.
  171. Should I be worried? Wait, is that why my neck and fingers are always wet?
  172. >"Mom! Dad!"
  173. >Hope calls for your and Lyra's attention, dropping the conversation.
  174. Oh. It looks like she found it.
  175. >You and Lyra head to where Hope is excitingly standing.
  176. >"Look! The sheep has four horns!"
  177. Yep. Amazing, huh?
  178. >"Why was it born like that?"
  179. It's special.
  180. >"Special? Like me?"
  181. Of course.
  182. >"And Mom?"
  183. Uh huh. You two mean the world to me.
  184. >Hope giggles.
  185. >She instantly grabs your hand.
  186. >"Let's go! There's chickens over there!"
  187. >Lyra smiles as your daughter pulls you to the next area.
  188.
  189. >Lunch!
  190. >You hear your stomach grumble.
  191. >It wants food.
  192. >Lyra looks a little loopy.
  193. Hope, are you hungry?
  194. >"No."
  195. >Hope, watching the cows, turns around.
  196. >"I'm starving!"
  197. Why didn't you say anything?
  198. >Hope ponders at your question before giving a simple answer.
  199. >"Cows first!"
  200. Fair enough.
  201. >You can't argue against that.
  202. Come on. Let's go clean up.
  203. >After washing the germs away, you and your family search for a place to eat.
  204. >Food stands are in every corner.
  205. >It makes your mouth water.
  206. >"Apples!"
  207. >Hope heads to the large area, dragging you along.
  208. >Even though the main ingredient are apples, many ponies flock there, knowing how delicious it is.
  209. >Might as well order.
  210. >Hope won't go for anything else.
  211. >She insists that you get the 12-piece fritters and the bowl of cross-cut potato fries.
  212. >The order comes quickly.
  213. >And the three of you eat.
  214. >Lyra munches on two fritters.
  215. >You consume three.
  216. >Hope gobbles three and a half.
  217. >The bowl of fries is half empty.
  218. Ooohh... too much...
  219. >You, Hope, and Lyra can't move.
  220. >The fritters and the fries have invaded the depths of your intestines.
  221. >But it was so tasty not to stop.
  222. >One more bite wouldn't hurt.
  223. >Your brain, however, halts your progress and decides to speak for you.
  224. Should we take the leftovers?
  225. >"I don't see why not, Anon. We could always eat them as a snack."
  226. >You stand up.
  227. Oof.
  228. >That felt odd.
  229. >Hope giggles.
  230. >She finds your full belly amusing.
  231. >You take a breath and head to the front, asking for a bag.
  232. >They have plenty.
  233. >The leftovers are stored for later.
  234. >The day continues.
  235. >Only after a short break of letting your stomach settle.
  236.
  237. >Games!
  238. >"Wow!"
  239. >Hope's eyes begin to spark.
  240. >She cannot contain her excitement.
  241. >"Can I, Dad?!"
  242. >Your heart melts at the sight of her thrilled behavior.
  243. Sure. Which one would you like to play?
  244. >Hope points her finger to a booth.
  245. >Balloon Pop.
  246. >Shoot water from the machine to fill up the balloon and pop it.
  247. >Mainly competitive.
  248. >That's the basics of it.
  249. >Hope sits down on one of the seats and urges you to follow.
  250. >Lyra watches in silence as you park yourself next to your daughter
  251. >A pony appears before you.
  252. >"Two?"
  253. Yes.
  254. >"It's 5 bits per play. Total is 10 bits."
  255. >You give 10 bits to the pony.
  256. >He gladly accepts them.
  257. >Hope readies herself.
  258. >She places her fingers are on the trigger buttons.
  259. >You do the same.
  260. >Something bugs you though.
  261. >How do ponies grip the machine let alone fire?
  262. >Thinking about it makes your head hurt.
  263. >You focus.
  264. >Hope's determined to win.
  265. >Should you give her a chance?
  266. >The alarm rings.
  267. >Both you and Hope fire at the target, filling the balloons up.
  268. >They're neck and neck.
  269. >It's close!
  270. >*POP*
  271. >Hope's balloon bursts.
  272. >The loud popping sound makes you jump.
  273. >Your reflexes always get the best of you.
  274. >"Congratulations, little lady! Pick a prize!"
  275. >Your daughter chooses the blue stuffed dog.
  276. >She then gives you a smug look.
  277. >"Dad's sloooooow!"
  278. >Your face turns sour.
  279. >Something stirs deep down in your body.
  280. >You need to give Hope a little taste.
  281. >OF REVENGE.
  282. Another round?
  283. >"Huh? Really?"
  284. >You nod to Hope and hand another 10 bits to the pony.
  285. >"I won't go easy, Dad!"
  286. >Neither will you.
  287. >You concentrate.
  288. >And blast away when the alarm rings.
  289. >*POP*
  290. >You stare straight ahead.
  291. >The pony comes to congratulate the winner.
  292. >"Uhh... what would you like, sir?"
  293. The lion.
  294. >You receive the stuffed lion.
  295. >Hope peers at you.
  296. >"Again!"
  297. Oh? Can you handle it? Dad won't go easy!
  298. >"Pay the pony!"
  299. >Another 10 bits down the drain.
  300. >*POP*
  301. >Your balloon and Hope's balloon are still intact.
  302. >Someone else won.
  303. >You stand up.
  304. Lyra, is that you?
  305. >Lyra's magic fades from her horn as she sets the female stuffed tiger next to herself.
  306. Did you use magic?
  307. >"What? Me? Don't be silly! I wouldn't do such a thing!"
  308. >You sit back down and pull out 15 bits.
  309. >Magic cannot stop you!
  310. Again, including her!
  311. >*POP*
  312. Again!
  313. >*POP*
  314. Again!
  315. >*POP*
  316. Not yet!
  317. >*POP*
  318. Once more!
  319. >*POP*
  320. >*POP*
  321. >*POP*
  322. >*POP*
  323. >*POP*
  324. >*POP*
  325. >*POP*
  326.
  327. Lyra?
  328. >"Hm?"
  329. >Your wife looks at you.
  330. >She has a small grin on her face.
  331. Do you think Hope would've kept winning if that pony hadn't kicked us out?
  332. >Up ahead, Hope is holding a dozen of stuffed animals in her arms.
  333. >She drops one of them.
  334. >As she picks it up, another falls out.
  335. >Lyra expresses her honest feelings.
  336. >"She would have continued to destroy us and ran that booth out of business."
  337. Run it out of business? I doubt--
  338. >You stop yourself.
  339. >That could be a possibility.
  340. >No. It has to be a joke.
  341. >"Dad!"
  342. >Hope runs to you and Lyra, dropping an animal on the ground.
  343. >She collects it.
  344. >"Could we go on that?"
  345. >Hope points to the huge ferris wheel.
  346. >You don't see why not, but would all the stuffed animals fit inside?
  347. Of course, Hope. Do you need to help with carrying those? You seem to be fumbling them.
  348. >"Uh uh. I got it!"
  349. Alright. Just watch where you're going.
  350. >At the ferris wheel, Hope enters first.
  351. >Followed by Lyra.
  352. >Then you.
  353. >It feels very cramped.
  354. >Luckily, the windows aren't covered by the stuffed animals.
  355. >The ferris wheel begins to move.
  356. >Hope presses her head against the glass.
  357. >"Wow! I can see everything!"
  358. So can I, Hope. So can I.
  359. >Lyra nuzzles your neck.
  360. >You rub behind her ears.
  361. >She loves that.
  362. >Words cannot express the happiness you feel.
  363. >All you can do is smile.
  364.
  365.
  366. >Enjoy life to the fullest.
