  1. [17:03:02] %Darthikyu: /announce The lecture will now begin, please refrain from interrupting it with needless, irrelevant, or pointless sentences. You're free to ask questions, but please don't troll or a certain # will have to look at you angrily :(
  2. [17:03:04] YeesusIsDaMvp: Caesar however set up the conditions made for an emperor to come to power
  3. [17:03:35] YeesusIsDaMvp: Aalbaniaaa well Augustus is not called caesar because most people see Julius as the most important caesar
  4. [17:03:35] #Lionyx: more like a certain % cause im gonna fall asleep within the next minutes im so tired
  5. [17:03:36] %Darthikyu: /announce Starting
  6. [17:03:38] %Darthikyu: ,
  7. [17:03:39] %Darthikyu: lame
  8. [17:03:43] %Darthikyu: Anyways
  9. [17:03:45] shadowsirens♡: ykow whos lamer
  10. [17:03:49] shadowsirens♡: nobody
  11. [17:03:58] %Darthikyu: As we all know, some men do not need an introduction (or a long one anyways)
  12. [17:04:02] %Darthikyu: and one of these poeple is definitely
  13. [17:04:53] %Darthikyu: .link https://vgy.me/RWBGLp.png
  14. [17:04:54] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://vgy.me/RWBGLp.png"><img src="https://vgy.me/RWBGLp.png" width="150" height="300"/></a></div>
  15. [17:05:07] %Darthikyu: The bald and beautiful himself, Julius Caesar
  16. [17:05:38] RosaDiaz: what a beautiful man
  17. [17:05:55] Aalbaniaaa: What an alpha
  18. [17:06:24] %Darthikyu: lol
  19. [17:06:26] Deoxeon The Noob: i'd have to agree with Aalbaniaaa, that is one hot CAAAAAEEEESSSAARRRRSSSEEE
  20. [17:06:36] Deoxeon The Noob was warned by Darthikyu. (don't stretch/caps abuse)
  21. [17:06:51] %Darthikyu: Caesar as a person is often best known for being the Roman dictator that he was
  22. [17:07:02] RosaDiaz: oh ye dictator
  23. [17:07:03] RosaDiaz: i am stupid
  24. [17:07:05] rayu: was the guy who made this statue the same who did the one of christiano ronaldo?
  25. [17:07:06] %Darthikyu: and while this was definitely a huge part of his life, there are many other aspects of his life that deserve appreciation
  26. [17:07:16] RosaDiaz: YeesusIsDaMvp look at what rayu said
  27. [17:07:22] %Darthikyu: rayu this statue was made in 40'ish BC
  28. [17:07:23] retsaK: darth can I use this info on an essay
  29. [17:07:24] %Darthikyu: so I doubjt it
  30. [17:07:33] Aalbaniaaa: xD
  31. [17:07:44] %Darthikyu: retsaK idt your teacher would find "some dude on PS" a credible source
  32. [17:07:56] %Darthikyu: now please stop interrupting me with needless stuff, yo ucan do that afterwards
  33. [17:08:46] %Darthikyu: G. Julius Caesar came from one of the more important families in Rome at the time, The Julia, and his last name (caesar) comes from a c-section
  34. [17:09:05] %Darthikyu: (because yes, romans knew what a c-section was, it comes from the verb Caedere (cutting))
  35. [17:09:28] %Darthikyu: To them it was quite literal: you cut open the belly and take out the baby. One of the founding fathers of the family was born that way, and poof, Caesar.
  36. [17:10:03] %Darthikyu: Throughout his career in life Caesar wasn't exactly the luckiest guy in the world
  37. [17:10:33] %Darthikyu: his father died at age 16, Sulla (a dictator/tyrant) grabbed power and had a severe dislike for Caesar, Cicero caused him major grief
  38. [17:10:40] %Darthikyu: in short, he didn't have the easiest path to power
  39. [17:11:05] YeesusIsDaMvp: Caesar wouldn't have liked it easy
  40. [17:11:24] %Darthikyu: this is enforced by the fact he had to flee Rome at some point under Sulla's reign (88BC)
  41. [17:11:37] %Darthikyu: He fled Rome and joined the army, where he was a very distinguished soldier
  42. [17:11:49] %Darthikyu: at this point, it's important to point out the Roman army had 2 sides: Nobles, and commoners
  43. [17:11:57] schnalkser: His father was 16 when he died?
  44. [17:12:00] schnalkser: what a player
  45. [17:12:26] %Darthikyu: The commoners are easy, they are footfolk and cannon fodder (figuratively) and usually had no real presence
  46. [17:12:49] %Darthikyu: the best they could become was Primus Pilus - a man who has a lot of influence and helps the Imperatores, but who doesn't have actual influence politically or a say
  47. [17:13:23] %Darthikyu: Nobles on the other hand underwent a different route, they became the leaders and tacticians of the army in the form of Legates, Decates, Centuriones, and imperatores
  48. [17:14:39] %Darthikyu: Caesar did a decent job in the army at the time, and made himself distinguished, which would later help his cause
  49. [17:15:02] %Darthikyu: It's also at this moment in time he returned home and got captured by pirates, resulting in the rather famous story where he demands the pirates ask for a bigger ransom
  50. [17:16:03] %Darthikyu: skipping to a bit later in time, Caesar managed to gather massive influence among the commonfolk, because he "helped them out" and motioned a lot of laws that would aid them in their daily life
  51. [17:16:21] YeesusIsDaMvp: Caesar was insulted at the ransom demand, which he saw as too low, and promised to crucify the pirates after he was free.
  52. [17:16:27] YeesusIsDaMvp: lmao
  53. [17:16:29] %Darthikyu: which he did
  54. [17:16:31] YeesusIsDaMvp: ik
  55. [17:16:33] %Darthikyu: but he slid their throats first
  56. [17:16:37] YeesusIsDaMvp: it's just the sentence is so good
  57. [17:16:44] %Darthikyu: cause unlike crassus, he didn't exactly enjoy seeing men die slowly
  58. [17:16:46] %Darthikyu: this of course helped him become Consul around 65BC (alongside Bibulus)
  59. [17:17:00] %Darthikyu: With Caesar now Consul, he had a grander scheme in his sights
  60. [17:17:23] %Darthikyu: He was monetarily in debt to Marcus Crassus, and politically in debt to Pompey, both legendary imperatores in Rome
  61. [17:17:36] %Darthikyu: Crassus for putting down the slave revolts, Pompey for taking out huge pirate bands
  62. [17:17:37] RosaDiaz: :o
  63. [17:18:08] RosaDiaz: so um was caesar considered liked by the majority?
  64. [17:18:11] %Darthikyu: Caesar however knew that Pompey's army influence, Crassus' money, and his popular influence meant they controlled the city together, and convinced the other two of his cause
  65. [17:18:13] %Darthikyu: yes
  66. [17:18:18] RosaDiaz: oh okay o.o
  67. [17:18:19] %Darthikyu: Rome's general populace adored Caesar
  68. [17:18:28] RosaDiaz: well then who didnt like him
  69. [17:18:30] RosaDiaz: except for
  70. [17:18:31] RosaDiaz: ya know
  71. [17:18:32] %Darthikyu: he was charismatic, empathic, knew how to speak/address people, and made a lot of promises
  72. [17:18:37] %deetah~♥: Heya Cosmo
  73. [17:18:40] %Darthikyu: most people that disliked him were members of the Senate
  74. [17:18:49] %Darthikyu: because he had too much power drawn to himself
  75. [17:18:49] %deetah~♥: Oh the lecture :o
  76. [17:18:52] %Darthikyu: but more on that later
  77. [17:18:57] RosaDiaz: ah i see C:
  78. [17:19:05] YeesusIsDaMvp: I'm just waiting for the campaigns
  79. [17:19:16] %Darthikyu: Crassus and Pompey both realized the importance of popular power, but both of them thought they could easily ignore caesar once they had power
  80. [17:19:20] %Darthikyu: (they were wrong)
  81. [17:19:36] %Darthikyu: This alliance between the three men, albeit unofficial, became known as the First Triumvirate
  82. [17:20:23] %Darthikyu: The Triumvirate heavily supported the general public for their support, while also intimidating enemies with the soliders of Pompey, with Crassus acting as a source of money allthewhile
  83. [17:20:39] %Darthikyu: this combination proved to be the ultimate rule over rome, but as anyone could tell you, it didn't last
  84. [17:21:06] RosaDiaz: o.o
  85. [17:22:04] %Darthikyu: Caesar in the meantime had 4 roman legions under his control, and due to how Rome worked, his immunity to the senate's representaille was coming to an end
  86. [17:22:21] %Darthikyu: so he fled to his provinces in Gaul (west-Europe) to avoid sticky situations for a while
  87. [17:22:55] %Darthikyu: However, this is where it all gets messy
  88. [17:23:01] RosaDiaz: oh no
  89. [17:23:08] YeesusIsDaMvp: well
  90. [17:23:11] YeesusIsDaMvp: fled and fled
  91. [17:23:20] YeesusIsDaMvp: he wanted to go on conquest in gaul
  92. [17:23:24] %Darthikyu: Caesar, as anyone knows, led large battles against the Germanic and Gaul tribes in the north who fought against him, for multiple reasons
  93. [17:23:41] RosaDiaz: hmm o.o
  94. [17:23:54] %Darthikyu: Reason 1: Fame and glory. Pompey had too much military might, but Caesar correctly assumed that if he became a glorified field commander (even more) he could rival him in that aspect
  95. [17:24:15] %Darthikyu: Reason 2: Money. he was still deep in depth, and Crasssus started refusing to cover for him. Wiping out tribes is worthwhile in that aspect.
  96. [17:24:32] %Darthikyu: Reason 3: Popularity. Wiping out tribes of the "barbarians" was simply a good way to gain support
  97. [17:25:02] %Darthikyu: However, as I mentiuoned, Caesar wasn't a lucky guy
  98. [17:25:44] %Darthikyu: his daughter (married to pompey, securing their alliance) died in childbirth, Crassus died in an attempt to conquer the east, and Pompey refused a new marriage
  99. [17:26:02] %Darthikyu: in short the two remaining power men both knew one of the two had to go, neither of them liked the other anyways
  100. [17:27:27] %Darthikyu: it is at this point in time Caesar became the dictator most people knew him as:
  101. [17:27:27] %Darthikyu: Due to him not being a governor anymore officially, the senate of Rome demanded he return to Rome
  102. [17:27:49] %Darthikyu: however, he knew he'd be prosecuted if he did, so he refused to disband his army, and instead crossed the Rubicon (border) and challenged Pompey directly
  103. [17:28:05] %Darthikyu: many people associate the sentence "Alea Iacta est" with this event
  104. [17:28:15] YeesusIsDaMvp: great quote
  105. [17:28:18] YeesusIsDaMvp: top 5 quote of all time
  106. [17:28:28] %Darthikyu: even though he'd more likely have said Alea Iacta esto
  107. [17:28:35] YeesusIsDaMvp: ""The die is cast"
  108. [17:28:35] %Darthikyu: (let the die be cast)
  109. [17:28:39] YeesusIsDaMvp: yeah
  110. [17:28:52] YeesusIsDaMvp: basically crossing the rubicon started the roman civil war
  111. [17:29:02] %Darthikyu: Sparing the huge war, Caesar defeated Pompey and became dictator of Rome
  112. [17:29:12] YeesusIsDaMvp: hold up
  113. [17:29:25] schnalkser: I rooted for caesar the entire time
  114. [17:29:28] YeesusIsDaMvp: can I just go in with a slight explanation of what happened to pompey
  115. [17:29:31] schnalkser: im glad he won
  116. [17:29:48] YeesusIsDaMvp: pompey got caught by pro caesar people and they chopped his head off and put it in a box and gave it to caesar
  117. [17:29:56] %Darthikyu: that
  118. [17:29:59] YeesusIsDaMvp: when Caesar was given the box and saw the head of pompey he was disgusted
  119. [17:30:02] RosaDiaz: caesear is a cool guy
  120. [17:30:11] %Darthikyu: Caesar generally didn't execute his enemies
  121. [17:30:18] YeesusIsDaMvp: because he never wanted pompey to die because he still considered him a friend despite their fight
  122. [17:30:27] %Darthikyu: in fact he pardoned most to all of his enemies politically
  123. [17:30:36] %Darthikyu: (which he really shouldnt have done given what most of them would do later)
  124. [17:30:49] %Darthikyu: Be it as it may, Caesar ruled of Rome in a decent and relatively fair way
  125. [17:31:04] %Darthikyu: but greed is greed, and on the Ides of March 44BC he was assassinated by multiple members of the Senate
  126. [17:31:18] %Darthikyu: Ironically, both Mark Anthony and his Wife had rumors of this assassination
  127. [17:31:28] %Darthikyu: but to his wife he mocked her, and left his bodyguards at home
  128. [17:31:29] rayu: like some order 66 stuff?
  129. [17:31:30] YeesusIsDaMvp: also it was because pompey died that Cleopatra snuck into the palace in alexandria wrapped into a carpet and rolled herself out "presumably naked" in front of caesar
  130. [17:31:40] +RossW: rip
  131. [17:31:48] %Darthikyu: and Mark anthony never had a chance to tell him, as he was intercepted before he could
  132. [17:31:58] %Darthikyu: And such is the end of Caesar, Assassinated and now dead
  133. [17:32:11] rayu: mark anthony had a really modern name for his time, lol
  134. [17:32:18] YeesusIsDaMvp: Darthikyu erm actually wasn't caesar given word of the assassination
  135. [17:32:20] #Lionyx: its translated
  136. [17:32:31] schnalkser: wait that was the story?
  137. [17:32:36] rayu: why would you translate it
  138. [17:32:40] %Darthikyu: YeesusIsDaMvp sources, bad ones, good ones, arguable
  139. [17:32:41] schnalkser: kinda anticlimactic at the end
  140. [17:32:42] rayu: you dont do it in other languages, right?
  141. [17:32:55] %Darthikyu: can we stop interrupting my lecture about this dudes name
  142. [17:33:00] #Lionyx: some languages do, other dont
  143. [17:33:03] %Darthikyu: it's marcus antonius in latin, Mark Antony in english
  144. [17:33:12] #Lionyx: marc antoine in french
  145. [17:33:27] %Darthikyu: The only confirmed things are that Caesar mocked his bodyguards for implying he needed them
  146. [17:33:29] rayu: shouldnt a lecture spark discussion
  147. [17:33:30] %Darthikyu: and went into thye senate alone
  148. [17:33:49] rayu: yeah well its marcus antonius in german
  149. [17:33:51] rayu: guess german rules
  150. [17:33:56] YeesusIsDaMvp: he refused to bring the bodyguards in because he didn't want to seem like a tyrant
  151. [17:34:03] %Darthikyu: maybe, maybe not
  152. [17:34:12] %Darthikyu: he's dead so it's hard to know, lol
  153. [17:34:26] %Darthikyu: Suetonius always writes Caesar off as a man with a superiority complex
  154. [17:34:33] %Darthikyu: Plutarch usually looks for more "sensible" reasoning
  155. [17:34:40] schnalkser: did caesar get to capture all of gaul before he died?
  156. [17:34:41] %Darthikyu: so their explanations for events are often paradoxal
  157. [17:34:43] YeesusIsDaMvp: also my Favorite Caesar moment is when he broke down crying in front of Alexander the greats tomb in alexandria
  158. [17:35:07] %Darthikyu: anyways really moving on cause time
  159. [17:35:22] YeesusIsDaMvp: He wept infront of the tomb because Alexander had conquered basically all of the known world at the age of 30 and caesar at the age of 50 had done nothing close to that
  160. [17:35:40] YeesusIsDaMvp: and I just find that crazy because even Caesar had idols
  161. [17:36:01] schnalkser: such a fanboy
  162. [17:36:08] %Darthikyu: Octavian, later known as Augustus, was the adoptive son of Caesar
  163. [17:36:14] RosaDiaz: how cute
  164. [17:36:27] %Darthikyu: Long story short he inherited a lot from Caesar, including the technical rule over the Roman republic
  165. [17:36:28] YeesusIsDaMvp: wasn't he also his nephew by blood Darthikyu?
  166. [17:37:09] %Darthikyu: caesar was his great uncle
  167. [17:37:35] %Darthikyu: anyways, Octavian inherited a lot and decided he wanted political power too (through some loops, but he decided it in the end)
  168. [17:37:59] %Darthikyu: however, issues arose as Mark Anthony was very, very forgiving to the assassins of Caesar
  169. [17:38:04] %Darthikyu: something Octavian could not stand
  170. [17:38:43] %Darthikyu: However, he needed him, so Octavian, Mark Anthony, and Lipid formed the official second triumvirate, which officially had power for 5 years
  171. [17:38:59] %Darthikyu: (Lipid died so fast that he's completely forgettable)
  172. [17:39:45] rayu: ok, so this name thing still bothers me
  173. [17:40:03] %Darthikyu: Now, you gotta understand, Romans care about Romans
  174. [17:40:05] %Darthikyu: and not much else
  175. [17:40:16] rayu: why does marcus antonius get translated even tho his name is very important and like octavian, who has a way older/weirder name, doesnt get his name changed
  176. [17:40:25] RosaDiaz: keep it 300 just like the rmans
  177. [17:40:26] RosaDiaz: romans
  178. [17:40:30] RosaDiaz: like kanye said.
  179. [17:40:33] RosaDiaz: (yes im joking)
  180. [17:40:50] %Darthikyu: so When Octavian showed to the senate that Mark Anthony (engaged with Cleopatra) would've given all his inheritance away to his sons, Egyptians, and burried himself in Alexandria (as an Egyptian)
  181. [17:41:11] %Darthikyu: the senate decided to revoke all of Anthony's titles, powers, and grants, which let Octavian dispose of him
  182. [17:41:57] %Darthikyu: again sparing the long war story, Anthony and Cleopatra both committed suicide, followed by the death of Caesarion (her son) and the end of the Pharaoh rule in Egypt, as it became annexed by Rome
  183. [17:42:10] schnalkser: Wait he dated his stepmom?
  184. [17:42:18] schnalkser: ehw
  185. [17:42:25] %Darthikyu: what
  186. [17:42:38] schnalkser: i thought cleopatra was caesars wife
  187. [17:42:49] schnalkser: and now Anthony is dating her
  188. [17:42:58] schnalkser: uncool
  189. [17:43:14] %Darthikyu: did you have an actual point
  190. [17:43:22] %Darthikyu: 2 people had the same wife
  191. [17:43:24] %Darthikyu: what's the point
  192. [17:43:44] schnalkser: oh wait
  193. [17:43:47] schnalkser: sorry my bad
  194. [17:43:55] schnalkser: i confused octavian and anthony
  195. [17:44:01] schnalkser: mixxed them up
  196. [17:44:03] schnalkser: continue
  197. [17:44:09] %Darthikyu: Long story short, Octavian became the sole ruler of Romne
  198. [17:44:22] %Darthikyu: and by incremental policies and power grants, he slowly gave himself pmore power without seeming a dictator
  199. [17:44:29] rayu: like erdogan?
  200. [17:44:43] %Darthikyu: uhm... sort of... I guess
  201. [17:44:46] harrybotter: no erdogan is clearly looking like a dictator
  202. [17:44:52] %Darthikyu: we're not debating that
  203. [17:44:55] %Darthikyu: to the point the Senate __gave__ him the name Augustus (the elevated one) and Princeps (Emperor)
  204. [17:45:44] %Darthikyu: Augustus expanded the Roman empire to one of its heights
  205. [17:45:47] %Darthikyu: .link https://www.ancient.eu/uploads/images/4334.jpg
  206. [17:45:47] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://www.ancient.eu/uploads/images/4334.jpg"><img src="https://www.ancient.eu/uploads/images/4334.jpg" width="400" height="277"/></a></div>
  207. [17:45:56] %Darthikyu: everything colored was conquered at some point by Augustus
  208. [17:45:59] %Darthikyu: (or his predecessors)
  209. [17:46:06] harrybotter: dayum
  210. [17:46:41] schnalkser: that map is wrong
  211. [17:46:52] schnalkser: it shows all of gaul is captured
  212. [17:46:59] %Darthikyu: which is was
  213. [17:46:59] schnalkser: But one small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders.
  214. [17:47:06] %Darthikyu: /me rolls eyes
  215. [17:47:06] harrybotter: oh ffs
  216. [17:47:11] schnalkser: thank you
  217. [17:47:13] harrybotter: XD
  218. [17:47:13] schnalkser: finally
  219. [17:47:13] %Darthikyu: the so called Pax romana, where armed troops guarded the empire, made the empire a stable and rather good place to live
  220. [17:47:14] Aalbaniaaa: kek
  221. [17:47:22] schnalkser: i waited the whole time
  222. [17:47:46] %Darthikyu: luckily Augustus died on time
  223. [17:48:08] %Darthikyu: and from 14 AD onwards (his year of death), the succession of emperors begun

  233. [17:48:58] %Darthikyu: This is a very small list of the family of Augustus
  234. [17:49:43] rayu: btw
  235. [17:50:04] rayu: I see what agrippina and germanicus were doing
  236. [17:50:07] %Darthikyu: It boils down to the fact Augustus didn't have sons, so he adopted Tiberius, who adopted Caligula (for less than ethical reasons... supposedly), Caligula was replaced with his uncle Claudius, who was murdered by his wife in favor of his adoptive son Nero
  237. [17:50:10] %Darthikyu: who was killed by his own guard which ended the dynasty
  238. [17:50:34] RosaDiaz: cool i learned something about tiberius!
  239. [17:50:48] %Darthikyu: That resulted in the 4 emperor year, where 3 general emperors took power only to be ousted by Vespasian
  240. [17:50:51] RosaDiaz: i dontthink hes cool anymore.
  241. [17:50:55] %Darthikyu: and Vespasian would then continue the empire
  242. [17:51:07] %Darthikyu: Which is a good point to end with cause Vespasian was a gucci boi
  243. [17:51:10] %Darthikyu: (he built the colosseum)
  244. [17:51:20] RosaDiaz: ive always wondered who built it
