- The salutation to the sun probably originates from India, from the vedic time, although the exact date remains unknown. The sun is, however, mentioned in the oldest manuscripts from that time, in one of the holy books: the Rig Veda (approximately 3000 to 6000 years B.C.) In this Rig Veda ten hymns (songs) are dedicates to the sun. It was not unusual for people to worship the sun or the creator of the sun. This form of worship was common in many cultures, including those in Eqypt, Persia and Greece.
