There are about six months in the game.

The first month is dedicated primarily to two love interests, Seb and Madi. While they get the main focus, there is of course scenes that feature the other two love interests (and other characters) so they get their own spotlight, but in terms of main plot progression we slotted those two as having a larger focus.

The second month, December, is dedicated to the other two love interests, Forr and Yvonne. These "main focus" things are assured, because they have to be. That reason is because, by February, everyone has to be on a certain affection level to justify future plot events (that is, it'd make sense for them to be good enough friends to be willing to go to spring break together in March.)

January is more up in the air. Everyone's officially had an equal amount of showtime due to November and December, so now it's a matter of how we diversify January. (Feburary is route lock stuff so it technically doesn't matter, as does beyond it.) People like having choices (even if they technically don't matter - Dragon Age and Skyrim lets you romance whoever, but at the end of the day you all come to the same ending cutscene, future implications aside) so we wanted to offer a larger taste of choice in January. However, since these options inherently make themselves optional to witness, and we don't want to route lock just yet (consider january a test run for players, a way to really shove themselves on the course they want while still having the freedom to back out) we need to figure out how to make January not pointless filler while still balancing out their importance to the story relative to the fact that in a playthrough, Diana might not bear witness to these events (and thus they hold less standing. rule of storytelling is to focus on what you can see, after all.)

So we do have some ideas, bits and pieces. One example is that if Diana wants, she can hang out with Madison as she has her own mini-arc through the month of January, related to sorority stuff because Madi is in one. So, say, Madison invites Di to join in on some shenanigans because Madi's overall character issue is being a nicer person and getting along with people, so this is an example of her trying to have that happen. If Di witnesses all of it she'll get involved and change the outcome, but it's likely if Di decides to follow a different love interest, this all goes down anyway but with a different, if ultimately unimportant (because it can't change too much if we're not there and then it becomes a lot of If, then later down the road bc of characterization) ending.

So it's having cake and eating it too, trying to give purpose to January while allowing freedom that inherently takes away purpose.
