- The Lantern-Bearers are a religious organization dedicated to the Architect, and one of its Pawns, the Great Lantern. The Lantern-Bearers wield the insight and prescience of a powerful, mysical being of light to direct them towards magical threats and intervene on situations before they can occur. The Architect is Var Sarlir's sun, whose intelligent light sculpts the world out of Ichor, the primordial mass the world is primarily comrpised of. The Lantern-Bearers' higher levels revere the Architect and the Lantern, but its lower ranks are not necessarily so religious, some regarding the Lantern instead as a powerful military commander or oracle rather than a being of divine providence.
- The Lantern-Bearers have many local chapters which are mostly self-governed, merely permitted to use the title and audited every so often; these chapters are usually much more relaxed than the Crown Chapter, its primary and by far largest group. The Crown Chapter is a heavily militant faction with an emphasis on the removal of personal identity, treating its field agents like soldiers fighting a war rather than the guards and investigators more common to the 'lesser' chapters. This chapter is divided into 4 sections: Magi, Warriors, Scientists, and Inquisitors, distinguished by their blue, red, gold and green colors, respectively.
- The first three roles are relatively straightforward; Magi encompasses magic users of all types, Warriors encompasses those with battlefield prowess including those with magic, Scientists are... well, Scientists. It is possible for an individual to be a part of more than one discipline, and usually a high honor for this to occur; a powerful battlemage may wear both red and blue to distinguish their combat prowess as well as their magical prowess. Inquisitors are a more general role; these individuals are diplomatic and usually serve as investigators and leaders, as well as the first point of contact for most outsiders.
- The Lantern-Bearers are known for their strict beliefs. They abhor many things which 'defy the will of the Architect', although these beliefs are hotly contested due to the generational shift occurring in the organization. Most noteworthy is their abhorrence for necromancy and the undead, which field agents are known to mercilessly strike down from time to time; this policy is under heavy debate, and is causing a serious schism in the organization. Other forms of magic, such as nature magic, are more subtly disliked by the Bearer leadership, for they tend to see its wielders and their connection to nature as unpredictable and 'savage' due to its baser, more instinctual nature.
- However, those beliefs are not necessarily required to be a part of the Bearers. As stated above, many of them are not religious at all and do not necessarily agree with the leadership. The Lantern-Bearers represent one of the most powerful support networks for individuals looking to do good in the world and therefore many join them merely because they offer excellent training, resources and reinforcement in the aim of rooting out evil in the world. Though they are best known for their propensity for tackling supernatural threats, they will completely supplant the guardship of small towns that could not support a regular guardship themselves, and do basic criminal investigations from time to time if the situation calls for it.
