  46. Considered one of the most violent television series of its era, this show followed the adventures of Los Angeles, California private investigator Joe Mannix, who first worked for a detective agency known as Intertect, which relied heavily on computers and a large network of operatives. In the second season, Mannix opened his own agency, with police widow Peggy Fair working for him as his secretary. Each episode featured plenty of fistfights, car chases, and shoot-outs.
  47. Mannix worked originally for Wickersham at Intertect and then struck out on his own, assisted by Peggy Fair (whose cop-husband had been killed) and Police Department contact Tobias.
  48. There's lots of competition in the private investigator premise for TV shows, but this was a standout in believability. Reminding one of the Johnny Cash quote, "Winners got scars, too", Joe Mannix got a fat lip or two but usually prevailed, or strategically retreated. Sort of a forerunner of the Jim Rockford character in occasional discretion-is-the-better-part-of-valor angles. Some episodes are now on VHS.
  49. This show was very entertaining and was action-packed. Mike Connors gave us middle aged guys a boost as we saw him running, jumping, kicking butt, and romancing the ladies. He had a closet full of plaid sport coats that matched the upholstery of his convertible. The formula was always in place: Mannix tracked the bad guy, got knocked out, was tied up, and shot the perpetrators after his escape. He got knocked out at least once per week, usually when someone struck him on the back of the head with the butt of a handgun. That's about 200 concussions. Quite a feat, considering Steve Young had to retire after his tenth concussion. Mannix could dole it out, too; as he was involved in a free-swinging melee each week. Peggy was always there for him ---- when she wasn't being kidnapped, that is.
