  1. Psalm 39
  2. For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
  3. 1I said, “I will watch my ways
  4. and keep my tongue from sin;
  5. I will put a muzzle on my mouth
  6. as long as the wicked are in my presence.”
  7. 2But when I was silent and still,
  8. not even saying anything good,
  9. my anguish increased.
  10. 3My heart grew hot within me,
  11. and as I meditated, the fire burned;
  12. then I spoke with my tongue:
  13. 4“Show me, O Lord, my life’s end
  14. and the number of my days;
  15. let me know how fleeting is my life.
  16. 5You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
  17. the span of my years is as nothing before you.
  18. Each man’s life is but a breath. Selah
  19. 6Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:
  20. He bustles about, but only in vain;
  21. he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.
  22. 7“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
  23. My hope is in you.
  24. 8Save me from all my transgressions;
  25. do not make me the scorn of fools.
  26. 9I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
  27. for you are the one who has done this.
  28. 10Remove your scourge from me;
  29. I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
  30. 11You rebuke and discipline men for their sin;
  31. you consume their wealth like a moth—
  32. each man is but a breath. Selah
  33. 12“Hear my prayer, O Lord,
  34. listen to my cry for help;
  35. be not deaf to my weeping.
  36. For I dwell with you as an alien,
  37. a stranger, as all my fathers were.
  38. 13Look away from me, that I may rejoice again
  39. before I depart and am no more.”
  40.
