Ablaze with bitter fury, shaking with anger at the loss of his dog, Perceval sprang to face him. The Black Knight dealt him a tremendous blow on his shield; it didn’t cut through to his helm but he bowed under the blow’s weight. Incensed, he struck straight back – and mightily, smashing through helm and chainmail hood and doing grave damage, cutting off an ear and into the cheek.
