55. An animated television show that focuses on a sixteen-year-old Peter Parker, and the origins of Spider-Man.
 56. Orphaned schoolboy Peter Parker lost even his uncle, leaving him with old, semi-helpless aunt May. Trough a messed-up experiment with spider DNA, he acquires super-powers. But he only uses them when masked in a flashy costume as Spider-man, a mysterious dashing hero who defeats all crooks. As Peter, his life is far humbler, moonlighting as photographer for the Bugle.
 57. I am an old Spider-Man fan, who has fond memories of watching the very first cartoon series in the late 1960's. In my opinion, "The Spectacular Spider-Man" blows away that version, and every other Spidey cartoon since. I just discovered "The Spectacular Spider-Man" online (I do not own a television), and I have been watching the episodes in order for the past few days. It took me a bit to get past the animation style at first, but now I love it. Spidey's movements are very fluid, and all the characters are distinctive from one another (I assume Liz Allen is no longer a blonde to avoid confusion with Gwen).

The series takes a few liberties with the original stories, but it is done with the intent of creating the best possible show. For instance, Harry and Gwen did not meet Peter until he attended ESU. And Gwen was never mousy as she is shown in SSM, although she was always brainy. The origins of some of the villains have been changed somewhat. But none of this really matters, because the characters are consistent in the SSM universe, and the creators keep the stories moving briskly. In one episode alone (S1E10, "Persona"), we meet Alien Symbiote (Black Suit Spidey), Black Cat, The Chameleon, Quentin Beck (Mysterio), and Phineas Mason (Terrible Tinkerer)! All the elements are there from the comics: the incredible array of villains, a deep supporting cast, Spidey's trademark quips, and Peter Parker's money troubles. The show even works in scenes from the Raimi Spider-Man movies.

What really makes me love "Spectacular Spider-Man" are subtle little touches that hearken back to the earliest days of the comics. Spidey's mask will briefly appear on half of Peter's face, or his eyepieces and red webbing will become the backdrop for a conclusion to a scene. These are bits taken directly from the very early days of the Lee/Ditko comics and really make SSM special. Heck, S2E4 "Shear Strength" recreates what is probably the most iconic moment from the Ditko run, where Spidey lifts the machinery off himself in the Master Planner's lab. All the stories reveal a sincere respect and affection for these characters, even as they are updated for a 21st century audience.

It is a real pity that real-world corporate politics brought the series to a premature end. But I will always treasure these 26 episodes. I doubt they will ever be surpassed. This is not only the finest Spider-Man cartoon series ever, but the finest superhero cartoon series ever, IMO.
 58. I have to admit that at first I was reluctant to partake of this series as I found the character designs most off-putting. I know most cartoons go for the stylized route these days because it's cheaper, easier and quicker to animate when you don't get bogged down in the details, but the character designs were... off-putting. Spidey and his fellow supposedly high school aged teenagers looked more like little kids, which of course led me to suspect, rightly or wrongly that the show would be aimed at those younger than myself.

Turns out I was wrong. Once I gave the show a chance, it proved to be surprisingly addictive thanks to its combination of strong writing - should I expect anything less from Greg "Gargoyles" Weisman? ;) - and strong voice acting. Josh Keaton was alternatively touching and hilarious as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, and he had a solid cast of dependable voice actors to play off of, including, ironically, Steve Blum, the voice of Wolverine in recent X-Men ventures, as the voice of the Green Goblin.

In fact as far as writing is concerned, this series easily trumps the 1990s Fox series. I know it's cruel to still give the previous series a hard time about it's many writing flaws, especially considering it was Fox's ridiculous censorship at the time that hampered that series and its attempts to present the first truly serious adaptation of Spider-Man (an intention that was sadly undermined by the aforementioned censorship and just plain strange if not outrightly poor story telling), but when you compare the two series, TSSM easily trumps it both in writing and characterization. And I almost forgot - action scenes. Another pitfall of the 90s series censorship issues: stilted fight scenes that were more like ballet tussling than anything else. TSSM features some truly eye popping fights, putting the 90s fights to shame.

The one preference I will give to the 90s series is its character designs, specifically the designs for Mary-Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy/Black Cat. They truly looked beautiful in that series, in TSSM, sadly, not so much.

The other 9 stars however belong to TSSM for superior writing, acting, and action, and it is a shame that it won't be returning.

 60. Due to the show beinng cancelled prematurely we will never know. However, Weisman expressed concern in making audience fall in love with Gwen Stacy the character and not think of her death as her defining point. Teletoon, Canada's 24-hour animation network, will begin airing the Spectacular Spider-Man this September. A sneak preview of the show will air Sunday August 24, at 8:30 am, followed by the beginning of it's weekly run on Sunday, September 7, in it's regular time slot of 10:30 am. A DVD collecting the first three episodes of the Spectacular Spider-Man will be released on September 9th, 2008. It will re-edit the episodes to form a mini-movie, and will be presented in a widescreen format that the series was originally produced in. Future volumes will most likely follow, while the season will eventually be collected as a whole following the release of the series in this format.

http://www.amazon.com/Spectacular-Spider-Man-Attack-Lizard/dp/B001BPJJ8M/ Yes, but he makes a cameo appearance in The Spectacular Spider-Man episode Reinforcement. He is shown as a patient wearing a Santa Claus hat in Ravencroft, during a group therapy session with Doctor Octopus and Electro.
