Simply put, you don't die when you're killed. It's not an all-powerful rule and only really works once a week or so, but it's like...just as you're about to hit that threshold between life and death, just as the light fades from your eyes and your soul unravels, you can grasp at the strings, pull yourself together, and declare "Not Yet." A literal second wind, with sheer willpower you pull yourself back from the edge or even beyond death and restore yourself enough that you are no longer in a condition that can be classified as 'dying' instantly.
