  8. My Experience with Culture Shock
  9.
  10. Every person has experience with culture shock, and I am no exception. I also have experience with culture shock. Although I have lived in the United States for almost 1 year, I still often feel homesick and I miss my family. When I first came to the U.S., I was very comfortable. Because everything was new, everything was interesting for me. I enjoyed my independence from my parents. I enjoyed experiencing new food and making new friends. Everything was strange, nevertheless I enjoyed the new experiences.
  11. Eventually, I got used to many differences. Even though I was used to them, I still wasn’t comfortable. Little by little I grew tired of the differences because the things in America weren’t new to me anymore. The differences weren’t interesting, they were boring. In addition, I began to miss things in Indonesia, such as food, my friends, and the warm climate. I became depressed and homesick. I stayed in my room, because I was tired of speaking English all the time. Even though I studied, my grades weren’t so good.
  12. Finally, I visited my advisor. He told me about culture shock. I learned that every person has this kind of experience, and it can’t be avoided. I learned that culture shock is temporary but universal. My advisor told me I must keep busy and talk about my culture shock with my friends. This was good advice. As a result, my culture shock decreased. Although I sometimes still miss my life in Indonesia, I don’t feel depression the same as before.

  14. A sentence fragment is only part of a complete sentence. Often, this happens when you have a dependent clause with no independent clause. “Although it was raining,” is a fragment.
  15. ---
  16. There are three basic types of connectors:
  17. coordinating conjunctions: connect similar grammatical structures, such as independent clauses (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
  18. subordinating conjunctions: connect dependent information (such as a clause or adverbial phrase) to the main clause (“Even though”, “in spite”, etc.)
  19. sentence connectors: connect one sentence to another (“However”, “In addition”, etc.)
  20. ---
  21. Homework: p. 188 exercise 2 - Choose correct connectors (there may be more than one answer).
