- I only track expenses for categories that I can actually reduce when money gets tight. I can't change how much I spend on my mortgage, so I don't track it. Once I buy a car insurance policy the cost is fixed for 6 month, so I don't track it. Sometimes I might shop around for a cheaper rate.
