  1. Breakfast is the best meal of the day. The TV has taught me well, because in breakfast, you get to have great foods like milk & cereal and bacon.
  2. It’s just too bad I couldn’t have steak for breakfast. Or more accurately, Mom won’t make me a steak breakfast. One day though.
  3. Lunch is fine, but it’s probably last in the ranking of meal times. It just can’t beat dinner nor breakfast. Actually, now that I think about it. Lunch is super disappointing! It’s the school’s fault that lunch’s name got tarnished like this. Years of horrible food have trained me to despise the taste of lunch. I was trained like a dog to dislike lunch. I’m pretty sure that’s illegal. Dang you middle school and elementary school! Hopefully high school lunches will be better.
  4. Dinner is much nicer. Mom really goes all out for every dinner in our house. She always makes something really tasty, and Mari complains that it’s ‘too unhealthy’, but couldn’t she see? It’s unhealthy to eat food you can’t enjoy!
  5. Brunch is the unicorn of mealtimes. It mixes both breakfast and lunch, which should be a bad thing, but the air of mystery adds something to brunch which I could never understand.
  6. I’ve never eaten brunch, nor a unicorn, but I wanted to.
  7. So, I was in the kitchen, chopping and frying all sorts of delicious looking food. Eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, ham, beef, chives, and onions were all sizzling on a pan and filled the ktichen with such an amazing scent. Or more like Hero was doing all that. I was giving Hero the chopped food for him to throw into the pot. Also I was watching the food.
  8. I must look a lot like Hector right now. There’s something I want to eat right in front of me, but I’m not allowed to touch it.
  9. Hm, let’s stop comparing myself to a dog. Cats are better.
  10. And cats do steal food...
  11. I wiggled my left arm to the plate the piping hot stir-fry was.
  12. “Eh-hem.” Hero cleared his voice behind me.
  13. My arm snapped back to the side. How long was he watching?
  14. “Sunny, I saw that.” No you didn’t. I hid the offending arm away from Hero’s eyes.
  15. “Look, if you wanted me to make you some food, I’d be glad to, but that’s for Mari.
  16. “I know.” But I wanted some. And I’m hungry.
  17. “I think it’s great you’re making Mari food,but I gotta ask, why?”
  18. “Mari’s sad today.”
  19. “What happened?” said Hero. Hero pulled his head closer to me.
  20. “She got her knee injury a few years ago around this week.”
  21. She really loved softball and would practice on and on for hours. So whenever this week comes around, Mari always mopes around the house. At least for the weekend.
  22. All that time she spent on softball became time for the piano instead.
  23. But not even the piano could cheer Mari up, and that was sad. Last year, all she did was stare out a window for a few days. It really bothered me to see her like that.
  24. This year was no different. Mari didn’t even get up early today! She just laid there in bed, and covered herself with her blanket. My gentle shoves couldn’t even get her out, so this was pretty bad.
  25. I didn’t like seeing Mari like that, so like a good little brother, it’s up to me to cheer her up!
  26. “Oh, so that’s why you started throwing rocks at our door. That’s kinda dangerous, you could’ve hit a window.”
  27. “Don’t tell Kel.” If he knew about this, I’d totally get teased.
  28. “Fine fine.”
  29. The oven dinged, and Hero ran towards it with his big fluffy pink oven mitts. He pulled out the cookies I helped make. They looked weird compared to Hero’s cookies, but uh, it’s only the taste that matters!
  30. Hero started piling up all sorts of food on a plate
  31. “Oh looks like everything is done, and right on time too. Let’s get this up to Mari.”
  32. We walked up the stairs up to my room and I opened the door.
  33. “Good morning Mari!” said Hero.
  34. “Hero! What are you doing here?” Mari covered her face with her blanket.
  35. “Well, me and Sunny made you some breakfast!” Mari checked the clock. It read 1:34 PM. “Well, uh, late brunch.”
  36. “You didn’t have to, you two.” Then Mari’s stomach growled for food. “But I guess I could eat haha…”
  37. Hero brought the plates closer and Mari dodged the omelet and went straight for the cookies.
  38. “Is it really a good idea to eat the cookie first?”
  39. “Don’t judge me Hero.” Looking at the cookies, its craggy shape meant it was mine and snarfed it down.
  40. I watched Mari’s face as she chewed and swallowed my cookie. She looked confused. Oh no. Confused isn’t good. I felt an ocean of disappointment flood me.
  41. “Oh, these cookies are nice, it’s a bit different from usual, but they’re good too.” I snuck a glance at Mari, and she was smiling.
  42. Yay.
  43.
