  1. >You sat at the edge of the Everfree forest, a dangerous and wild place.
  2. >Certain death awaits those who enter here.
  3. >The moon stood on the horizon, fading away behind a thick cloud cover.
  4. >A soft breeze blew through the trees.
  5. >The icy wind snatched the very breath from your body like a thief in the night.
  6. >Good, let it take what it wants. You won't be needing it anymore.
  7. >This wasn't right.
  8. >None of it was.
  9. >Equestria was supposed to be a Utopia, a place many could only dream of visiting.
  10. >You made it!
  11. >Out of everything that possibly could've happened, somehow, you made it to Equestria!
  12. >This was the place where dreams come to life,
  13. >This was the place where friendship truly was magic!
  14. >So why were you so alone?
  15.
  16. >You are Anonymous, and the name couldn't be more fitting.
  17. >No matter how hard you try, no matter what you do, you are anonymous.
  18. >You are indecipherable, you are an enigma to ponykind.
  19. >Nopony cares about who you are, or what you're even doing here.
  20. >You have no one.
  21.
  22. >Applejack tried to get you helping out on the farm.
  23. >Soon she realized that you couldn't kick strong enough to actually knock anything down.
  24. >She let you go pretty quickly after that.
  25. >Twilight tried to dissect you, but didn't show much more interest then that.
  26. >Rainbow tried to mess around with you and have some fun
  27. >A few broken bones and days of coughing up blood later, she gave up.
  28. >Pinkie threw a party, and that was neat.
  29. >But Pinkie's always throwing parties, and yours didn't really stand out.
  30. >Rarity made you a suit, which was nice.
  31. >But she's been so busy that you never got to really even chat.
  32. >Fluttershy... well, she lived up to her name.
  33. >And now, you're living up to yours.
  34.
  35.
  36. >You are Anonymous
  37. >You were destined to be forgotten
  38. >To blend into the background
  39. >Never the center of attention
  40. >What better way to end it all, then to fade into the background, never to be seen again?
  41. >You stopped on the edge of the Everfree.
  42. >You took a step forward
  43.
  44. >You threaded your way through the dense woods
  45. >Something nipped at you, just beyond your perception.
  46. >You didn't know what it was, but you wouldn't let it distract you.
  47. >You emerged from the forest, cloudy skies overhead.
  48. >A slight mist started to seep through the trees, chilling you to the bone.
  49. >Up ahead you could see a worn old rope bridge crossing over a chasm.
  50. >You shuffled towards the edge of the chasm.
  51. >Looking down, you couldn't even see the bottom.
  52. >Yep, this'll do.
  53. >You thought back to Ponyville.
  54. >You wondered if any of them would remember you.
  55. >You took a step forward.
  56.
  57. >Then, you stopped.
  58. >A soft melody twirled through the air.
  59. >Plucking straight at your heartstrings.
  60. >Your curiosity got the better of your morbid desires, and you followed the tune.
  61. >You scraped your arms on the rough branches, leaving jagged gashes down the sleeves of Rarity's suit.
  62. >Not that she'd ever hear about it.
  63. >You parted the brush to reveal a gap in the tree cover.
  64. >Starlight shone down through an opening in sky.
  65. >At the edge of the clearing sat a small pond, rippling in the heavy rainin the storm.
  66. >Her fur was mint green, matted down and soaked from the rain.
  67. >Her eyes were shut, a peaceful look on her face.
  68. >She shivered, frosty vapor drifting out of her nose with every breeze.
  69. >What was she even doing out here?
  70. >Her horn was coated in a golden aura, a harp resting in her magical grasp.
  71. >She was the source of this beautiful melody.
  72.
  73. >Branches snapped on the other side of the clearing.
  74. >The brush shook violently, a pair of green eyes glowing in the darkness.
  75. >The mare had her back turned.
  76. >She looked so peaceful, as if nothing could ruin this moment.
  77. >She didn't stand a chance.
  78.
  79.
  80. >The timberwolf started to creep forward, creaking and groaning with every step.
  81. >Why wasn't she moving?
  82. >On instinct, you sprinted towards the mare.
  83. >The timberwolf took notice, and prepared to pounce.
  84. >Why wasn't she moving!?
  85. >You leapt at her, wrapped your arms around her, and knocked her to the ground.
  86. >The timberwolf pounced, slashing it's claws at the mare.
  87. >Thunder struck, drumbeats pounding across the sky.
  88.
  89. >You let out a guttural scream.
  90. >It's claws raked across your back, the cold wind biting at your flesh.
  91. >Beneath you, two golden disks opened wide in surprise.
  92. >Hastily, you picked yourself up, readying yourself for another attack.
  93. >When you turned around all you saw was a jaw full of oaken teeth, and those glowing green eyes.
  94. >Then, a flash of golden light.
  95. >The timberwolf's jaw shattered, sending wood chips flying everywhere.
  96. >It's shook it's head, trying to get it's bearings after the blast.
  97. >Another flash of golden light, and the rest of the head shattered.
  98. >The body of the timberwolf fell apart, mystical energy dissipating from the branches.
  99. >You looked to the mare, jaw hanging wide open.
  100. >She stood there, the golden aura around her horn fading as she slumped over.
  101.
  102. >"Why?" She said softly.
  103. "Huh?
  104. >"Why can't I even die without hurting somepony else"
  105. >She glanced over at your back, blood running down your skin in rivulets.
  106. "What?"
  107. >"Why would you save me? I- I came all the way out here so that nopony else would be around."
  108. >You sat there, dumbfounded at what you were hearing.
  109. >Was she trying to...
  110.
  111.
  112. >Her shoulder bumped into you as she walked past, lyre floating beside her
  113. >"You wasted your time saving me."
  114. "I could say the same thing"
  115. >She stopped, her face scrunched up in confusion as she turned to look at you
  116. >You grabbed her lyre out of the air, plucking a couple of the strings
  117. "There's a pretty nice cliff back that way. I'd be at the bottom of it if I hadn't heard this."
  118. >"I- I just wanted to go out doing the thing I love, you know?"
  119. >She sat down in the mud, staring off towards the pond.
  120. >"It's all I have left," She muttered.
  121.
  122. "Heh, at least you got something."
  123. "Me? I've been here a couple of weeks and I still haven't found anything worth holding on to."
  124. >"Must be pretty rough, having nothing to call your own."
  125. "You... kinda get used to it after a while."
  126. "Easier to live with it if you pretend there wasn't anything there to begin with."
  127. >"Truer words were never spoken," the green mare said, a ghost of a smile on her face.
  128. >You sat there in the silence for a while, watching the raindrops strike the pond's surface
  129.
  130. >"Name's Lyra, Lyra Heartstrings."
  131. "Anon, Anon Y Mous."
  132. >She stood, wiping off a little bit of the mud in her coat.
  133. >"Well Anon, that cliff isn't going anywhere anytime soon."
  134. >You cocked an eyebrow.
  135. "You wanna jump right after I took a timberwolf on for you?"
  136. >"Nah, just wanna enjoy the view," she said, winking.
  137. >She snagged her lyre out of your hands and started strumming a tune.
  138.
  139.
  140. >Soon enough, the two of you had reached the chasm.
  141. >The wind blew sheets of rain left and right, leaving the rocks slick and muddy.
  142. >You heard the rumble of thunder off in the distance.
  143. >You were shivering like a madman, and you were pretty sure you could see your own breath very once in a while.
  144. >But you didn't mind.
  145. >Neither of you did.
  146. >The two of you sat on the edge of the chasm, legs dangling in the air
  147. >Not all that long ago you were about to jump
  148. >Then you heard her melody
  149. >You sat in silence as she played her song
  150. >She was skilled enough that you're sure she could hold a conversation without missing a beat.
  151. >It just felt wrong to try and interrupt.
  152. >Lightning danced across the sky, lighting up the clouds with flashes of bright white light.
  153. >The rain poured down your back, washing the blood away and leaving it numb.
  154. >Your suit was drenched, sticking to you like a second set of skin.
  155. >Whenever you jerked your head the world went spinning.
  156. >Spots tickled the edges of your vision.
  157. >But through all of this pain, one thing stood out.
  158. >You weren't so alone anymore.
  159.
  160. >The two of you sat there and watched the storm roll on by.
  161. >The pitter-patter of raindrops gave a steady rythm to Lyra's melody.
  162. >When the song crescendoed, thunder struck, punctuating her song.
  163. >Eventually, the thunder stopped booming.
  164. >Then the wind and rain slowed.
  165. >Then, they stopped, leaving a thin grey film across the sky.
  166. >Then even that was gone as the sun's bright rays burst through the cloud layer.
  167. >The two of you sat there, letting the warmth seep inside.
  168. >Soon the cold was just a memory.
  169. >At some point your arm found it's way around her.
  170. >She stopped playing for a little bit to ask about your weird monkey fingers.
  171. >You showed them off to her, cracking a couple lame jokes while you were at it.
  172. >She didn't seem to mind, chuckling a little no matter how crappy they were.a
  173. >Maybe she was just happy to have someone else too.
